Rubio phones into campaign event after plane makes emergency landing

(CNN) - Sen. Marco Rubio delivered a speech by telephone Saturday after his plane made an "emergency landing" in Albuquerque, New Mexico, preventing him from physically making it to a Mitt Romney rally in Des Moines, Iowa.

"Not one, but two planes I was on today had malfunctions," Rubio tweeted. "Second one forced to make emergency landing in New Mexico. I know how to take a hint!"

Rubio also said he was looking forward to the rally, but the replacement plane would not arrive in time for him to make it.

A spokesman for the Albuquerque International Sunport told CNN that the plane may have had an electrical issue.

"We did have a private plane land here at about 3:58 local and they had a sensor that indicated that it could be an electrical problem," spokesman Daniel Jiron said. "They went to Atlantic Aviation to make a determination on the issue."

Rachel Sandoval with Atlantic Aviation said four passengers were aboard the jet, and that passengers thought the battery was overheating and believed they saw smoke.

Rubio is a high-profile surrogate for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and was scheduled to hold a campaign event for Romney in Iowa at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday. Earlier in the day, he attended an event in Las Vegas.

Jeeze.... two planes in one day with issues. We seriously need to take a look at the airline industry in major ways again. Delta would make one pause on that alone.

Romney's for President of Lies, Distortion and Hate. The President of no details, just hate Obama...No spine, just hate Obama. This man is a worthless robot of the Tea Party...When is he ever going to tell the truth about anything, His taxes, His business, when was governor , his faith and his detailed vision for America. Instead he lies and distort others, like he did in the primary. I deal with many republicans who say he has no spine and that he is worse than John Kerry (And they cannot stand or trust him) . MITT STOP LYING TO AMERICA. GIVE AMERICA YOU DETAILED PLAN IF YOU HAVE ONE TO STICK TO.

Not one but two planes he was on had malfunctions. Are the liberals that afraid of him st stoop to sabotage? (sarcasm) Actually, he adapted well to the situation, was pragmatic about the events unfolding in real time and still managed to complete his mission. Would have made a good Marine and probably won't be too bad at representing the public. What's next Marco, get buried alive in an earthquake and deliver a speech to the full Senate? Wait a minute, he probably would.

Quit overstating it. It wasn't an emergency. Procedures state that a landing should be executed as soon as possible, and the controller would have given them priority, but at is not an emergency event

Really? Is that an approprite reaction? Grow up. Certainly understand that you disagree with his opinions, but not caring if someone dies is a bit much. We ALL need to dial back the political hate speak to forge a path forward for our nation.

  19. Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer

I just don't understand Mitt Romney at all. First he travels around the country for two years telling the American people that he is best equipped to fix the economy because of his business and entrepreneural experience and success. Then he says people with business experience and success understands the economy better than anyone else. Then if so Mr. Romney, why aren't you selecting successful businessman and entrepreneur Donald Trump as your running mate? I sense hypocrisy and lies here once more.

Why on earth would people in new Mexico want to hear from Rubio? Is simply pretending to have something with all Hispanic people enough? This right-wing, Teavangelical anchor-baby has nothing in common with working-class Latinos who are tired of Republican's blocking all progress and only defending the interests of the ultra-rich.
