Cheney: Picking Palin in 2008 was a 'mistake'

(CNN) – Sen. John McCain made a mistake in 2008 by picking then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, former Vice President Dick Cheney said in an interview that aired Sunday.

Cheney led the vice presidential search for Gerald Ford in 1976, and again for George W. Bush in 2000. That last search resulted in Cheney himself being selected, and he served as Bush's number two for eight years.

On Sunday, Cheney said Palin failed to meet the number one requirement for a vice president: a readiness to step into the top job if needed.

"Based on her background, she was only governor for two years, I don't think she passed that test of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake," Cheney said in an interview with ABC News.

Cheney, who said he knows and likes Palin, argued that considerations about which demographic a potential candidate could help pull in clouded the 2008 decision to put Palin on the ticket.

"Those are important issues but they should never be allowed to override that first proposition and I think that's one of the problems that McCain had," Cheney said.

"I think she is a good candidate and I don't see any reason why she can't be an effective vice president," ~~ Dick Cheney (Sept 8, 2008)

Aww. Come on, Dick! This is one of those "known knowns" Rummy talked about, years ago. Where have you been?

When Dick Cheyney and GWB were authorizing the illegitimate Iraqi war, Sarah Palin was defending our national security by spying on Russia! Haha! Eat your heart out Dick..or wait...bad phrase!

Such an insight. Only a war criminal, fiscal thief and lair can be so honest to indicate none was better than himself. Afteral, it was Cheney that picked himself to be Bush's running mate.

To think a 1/2 term quiter of her Governorship might be a bad choice. Duh! The brilliance of the GOP is simply amazing.

Dont need Cheney to validate this – of course the twit wasnt qualified. McCain made a short term fix and a long term nightmare.

Every time I think of that moment in history it reminds me of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. The allegory of a man trying to resurrect something, but instead creating a monster that got out of control, went on a destructive rampage and kept haunting him seems to fit here. Sarah Palin should have bolts on her neck.

What a shameless self-promoter, last seen at a chick-fil-a with her husband supporting fast food fascism. Pathetically trying to eek out her last bit of celebrity. Im sure the investors a chick-fil-a are cringing about their new self appointed spokesperson.

All I can say is, eat up Sarah, you deserve whatever comes from eating that food anyway.

Cheney may be correct but he is also an old war monger who just can't stand not being the focus of attention. Go back to where you came from

I don't know that Palin was a bad pick, but I do know that McCain was. He didn't have the guts to run an election. He threw it. I looked at him several times on TV and asked what the heck he was doing. Useless candidate. If he is a Democrat (which is what he has been acting like), then he should have run on the Democratic ticket. I guess he did his job after all. He got a Democrat elected.

Cheney just now reached this conclusion? I knew it as soon as it was announced and for the very same reasons.

Great way to play 'Monday morning quarterback', Dick. Why weren't you saying that back in 2008? Oh, that's right... you were FOR Palin before you were AGAINST Palin. (See the quotes above).

So the most dangerous VP in history thinks McCain's choise was a mistake. He also selected Ford for VP. What does that say about Mitt- the guy McCain turned down? Cheney wants him for President. It tells me that mitt will be a puppet for all of cheney's special interest friends, like his other choices.

Cheney should now pick himself as the Veep candidate. And why not, Dick has done it before for GW.

I really wish Mitt picks one from the following:
Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin. Michelle Bachmann, Bobby Jindal, sheriff Joe Arpaio, ....you get the drift.

Have always respected Cheney and his opinion but he is so wrong. McCain never had a chance because of the way he ran his campaign. More people voted for her than for him. He wouldn't have done as well as he did if she hadn't been on the ticket! McCain's time has passed and he should get out of politics...

@Katie. Spot on. With all the smoke and mirrors around Palin that's a point that many people miss. She wasn't even qualified to be Veep (or likely even Governor). Palin is probably one of the biggest phonies in American politics who used her shrewd opportunism and exaggerated patriotism to fool gulliblle voters into thinking she's actually competent and informed. Scary how uneducated voters can be manipulated.

Cheney = Republican = MUST SHOW ANGRY LIB DRONE RESPONSE WHETHER I AGREE WITH HIS POINT OR NOT

    Fair assessment, you drone hacks?

Let's not forget that years before His Holiness King Obama proclaimed a half-hearted "evolved" support for gay marriage, Vice President Dick Cheney openly stated his personal support for gay marriage.

From the media coverage, you'd think that Obama INVENTED gay marriage, not unlike Gore's invention of the internet.
