Romney cancels meeting with party leaders in Israel

Jerusalem (CNN) - The leaders of the liberal Labor Party in Israel took issue with Mitt Romney's decision to cancel a meeting during the presumptive GOP nominee's trip in Israel on Sunday.

Romney made a "last-minute cancellation" with Labor Party Leader Shelly Yachimovich, according to Labor parliamentary member Isaac Herzog, who was also scheduled to take part in the session.

"It is a pity that Governor Romney did not have the opportunity to hear about the political and economical alternative that exists today to Netanyahu's Government and that alternative is the Labor Party," Herzog said in a statement.

Yachimovich leads the party that, until recently, had served as the primary opposition group to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, when the Kadima Party left the coalition government, it became the de facto opposition group.

Kadima Party Chairman Shaul Mofaz announced his party's departure from the coalition in mid July over failed attempts to agree on an alternative to the law that exempts ultra-Orthodox men from serving in the Israeli army.

Romney's campaign had listed the meeting on its schedule as recently as Saturday.

The campaign, however, said in a statement Sunday that they originally agreed to set up the meeting with the opposition "in keeping with diplomatic protocol," but since the Labor Party no longer represents the opposition, the meeting was canceled.

"The governing coalition and the makeup of the opposition has gone through changes recently and we have worked with the Israelis to ensure that the Governor's meeting schedule reflects these changes in keeping with protocol," said Romney spokesman Rick Gorka.

Earlier in the day, Romney met with Kadima Party Leader Mofaz, and separately with Netanyahu.

Mitt is a very dangerous man. He is clueless and very easely influenced by self serving special interest. Mitt = Chaney and America has had enough of that coward. In his entire campaign the only policy that Mitt has articulated is, lets go to WAR, with or without justification.

Romney's handlers are handling him the way Palin was handled, whereas Palin was not the candidate. They need to let him be in control of his actions and decisions, whether good or bad. He is supposed to be the leader, not a puppet that decisions are being made for.

Why meeting with Mofaz if you plan to meet no one else beside those in government?

In Israel all men under the age of 50 serve to defend their homeland with pride, honor and dignity. Romney has chosen a different path for himself and his sons in America: he avoids combat; avoids paying taxes that would be used to support American troops in combat; avoids releasing his tax returns that are obviously the tightest held secrets on earth that would destroy him if exposed; avoids questions about his extra years at Bain Capital where records shown he was the CEO of Bain when he said he wasn’t; and now he avoids meeting with Israeli leaders whom he is afraid of because they might put him in an awkward position of having to something significant regarding security in the middle-east.

  12. Romney, you are a LOSER

As an Israeli Labor party supporter, i was very offended by Mit Romney's snub to Shelly Yechimovitz.
Romney is doing what Bibi Netanyahu and Sheldon Adel$on are telling him to do.
this is not the way a leader should act.

NO idea, no class, no solutions, no way to communicate facts, no diplomacy – and Mitt is proud of it! It is a real insult to the world (since he is on that “world stage” now…) to present this one dimensional, clue less, greedy man, as a presidential candidate. The same as with GWB – first the world excused the choice (one can make a mistake, right?) but then a lot of Americans showed what an uneducated, ignorant bunch they had really become. Are they going to do it again after what they and the world have been through with the last GOP President and his administration???

Mitt the twit, it is so absolutely true, remember this twit was in favor of the war, but this coward would not go. Just like Cheney and the rest, will send you to war but too cowardly themselves to go. This twit wouldn't even visit our troops in Afganistan because he is a COWARD and Willard, how does the view look from the rear?

Why should state leaders meet with Romney when he doesn't want to meet with the opposition to the current leaders? Seems hypocritical to me since he wants heads of state to meet with him, and he is the opposition to the current leader in the United States. It would be different if he was the head of state, but I guess he needs to be reminded again that right now he is technically, just another guy who says he wants to be president.
