Dems approve draft of same-sex marriage plank for convention platform

(CNN) - Democrats meeting in Minneapolis this weekend approved draft language supportive of same-sex marriage as a plank in their party's platform, two Democratic sources confirmed Monday.

The full Democratic platform committee will now consider the same-sex marriage endorsement at a meeting in Detroit, scheduled to take place in two weeks. It will then be voted on by convention delegates in Charlotte. If approved, it would mark the first time support for same-sex marriage is included in the Democrats' platform.

The specific language of the same-sex marriage endorsement was not immediately available.

In May, President Barack Obama publicly backed same-sex marriage for the first time in an interview with ABC News. Obama said soon after at a campaign fund-raising event that he believes marriage equality "strengthens families."

"I want everyone treated fairly in this country," Obama said. "We have never gone wrong when we've extended rights and responsibilities to everybody," he said, drawing big applause. "That doesn't weaken families, that strengthens families."

News of the same-sex marriage plank at the Democratic Convention was first reported by the Washington Blade.

Marc Solomon, the national campaign director of the pro-same-sex marriage group Freedom to Marry, said in a statement he was "grateful" for the vote of the drafting committee to include the marriage language.

"As I testified to the Committee on Friday, the Democratic Party has a noble history of fighting for the human and civil rights of all Americans," Solomon wrote. "We are proud that the Committee is including language that will ensure the Party is leading the way forward in supporting marriage for loving and committed same-sex couples and their families."

"Sniffit – You OBVIOUSLY do not know what you're talking about. Proof is your post."

I've eaten their food and thought it was complete crap. That's my opinion. Plain and simple. What's hard to understand about that for you? Some of us happen to live outside the GOP/Teatroll hivemind and have thoughts of our own rather than simply assimiliating to the latest GOP/Teatroll party line. That's ok tho...Chick-fil-A simply "must" be delicious because they hate gay people and believe they're better than them, right? Nothing says "scrumptious" like a heapin' helpin' of religious bigotry.....nom nom nom nom nom.....

If you're going to allow one or two types of people to marry allow them all including polygamists or are all you pro-gay marriage people bigots and hypocrites according to your own stance?

Why should a religious issue be decided by the government? Its no one's business.

The Solid South used to always vote Democratic. They did it based on the Civil War, Reconstruction and lingering racism. Now it votes Republican. The South didn't change its racism. It only changed the name of the party it supports.

Saw Barney Frank's wedding picture. Fantasy is NOT the word that came to mind!! And their wedding vows made a mockery of marriage.

California ... Chick – fil – A is a horrible orginization. When Jim Henson Co. pulled out of the deal between the two originizations over Chick – fil – A's anti-gay stance Chick – fil – A state the reason for it was because of a safety recall, in other words they lied. So let me make sure we're clear, being gay is to be shunned upon worthy of punishment of having less and unequal rights, but lying, why, that there's a christian value. Beetch please!

The difference between Obama and Romney is that Romney IS pandering. Its the whole reason why your party does not want him. His changes are so transparent that expediency is the only explanation. Obama takes his time, thinks things through and is deliberate in his decisions. I would take his thoughtfulness and intelelctual evolution over Romney's a$$-kissing anyday. Oh, and we don't just blame Bush, its the whole rotten set of ideas that have sent this country on a sownward spiral over the last 3 decades, that's what we blame: matters only came to head when Shrub was in charge.

"The KKK was in fact founded by Democrats."

Yes, and Republicans used to be liberal and pro-regulation. Parties change over time. I mean, even Reagan would be considered too far to the left by the modern GOP. To think that the party that had members of the KKK is the same as the party that elected the first black president is not so unbelievably ignorant and lacking in common sense that I HAVE to assume you're doing it intentionally.

Great! I hope the democrats go as far out on a limb as possible regarding gay marriage. It will serve as a constant reminder to Americans about who to vote for president. It won't be Obama.

It is garbage. Kids love hamburgers from fast food chains, thinking they're the best in the world. The love the cheap burgers until they mature and develop refined taste buds. I would compare their chicken to the worst of the fast food burgers. DRY.

Ok, I'll bite, where are your facts? All you have is make ad hominem attacks without proving whatever point you were tryingh to make. I know that in the rightie bubble-world, facts don't matter when its your point, but even you have to do a little more than point to a KKK membership that was essential to having a political career in the South in the 1950s as proof that the same party 60 years later is a haven for bigots. All the attacks on the president that have come from the GOP, do you dismiss those?

Will try this again( first comment was reviewed and evidently rejected). Congrats to the dems for the support of gay marriage. I'm straight and support gay rights. We r about equal rights are we not? Also strongly do not support the concept that it should be up to the churches to decided who can marry. Look at what happened Mississippi.....

The south is not racist look what is going on in Mississippi. A First Baptist Church would not let a African American couple get married in ther church. Did I say AMERICAN.

Amen. If any of you have not seen the article about the black couple whose church refused to marry them, then you should look it up and find it. I was not at all surprised by the name of their church. If they were smart they would make it their former church. I know I did.

If this was about civil rights and the democratic party really cared about them, they would include incest couples, adults to marry children, and polygamy. All of those people way that they love each other too, yet you wish to exclude them but include gays... It doesn't make any sense.
