Crossroads blasts Obama over economy in new ad

(CNN) - Crossroads GPS, the private arm for the Karl Rove-backed super PAC American Crossroads, released a new television ad Tuesday blaming President Barack Obama for the still-lagging economy.

The ad opens with CBS News anchor Scott Pelley saying in a July newscast, "Good evening. This is the worst economic recovery America has ever had."

– Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker

– Check out the CNN Electoral Map and Calculator and game out your own strategy for November.

The commercial , "News," then cites figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics stating the country has had 41 straight months of an unemployment rate above 8%, with 23 million Americans without full time work.

The 23 million figure, used frequently by Mitt Romney on the campaign trail, includes those who are out of work, as well as about 8 million who are only working part time, according to the bureau.

At the end of the commercial, the narrator urges viewers to "tell (Obama) for real job growth, stop spending and cut the debt."

Crossroads GPS will air the ad, which comes as part of a recent $25 million ad buy, in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

The group's latest ad marks one of a serious of recent spots hitting the president over the economy. Crossroads GPS has spent tens of millions of dollars to run advocacy ads critical of the president and in support of GOP lawmakers and candidates in crucial Senate contests.

Obama's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this ad.

Responding to the ad, the Democratic National Committee said the commercial "ignores the president's record" and points to the 4.4 million private sector jobs created in the last 28 months, as well as a $2 trillion deficit-reduction plan signed into law.

"Mitt Romney wants to take us back to the same failed policies that caused the recession, exploded our deficits, and punished the middle class in the first place-massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and letting Wall Street write its own rules. Independent economists agree his plan would do nothing to create jobs now and could drive us back into recession," the statement read.

    Under Bush the unemployment rate was 4.8% until the Democrats took control of the House and Senate ... then it went up because of the policies pushed by the liberals.

    The economy is going up, slowly but it's going up. Blast all you want but it sure beats the down that was happening before he got in to office.

    Where was this ad when GW Bush blew away our budget surplus on stimulus checks? I question the education of those who think a cut in spending and no tax increases will actually help turn this economy around.

    This ad is a total joke.

    Bush doubled the national debt in 8 years and has cost the tax payers another 3.6 trillion(since Obama took over) from not paying for 2 wars, the Bush tax cuts and medicare part D. The deficit has gone up under Obama due to lack of revenue from the GOP/Bush policies that drove the economy into a ditch. The GOP can only pray that Americans have a short memory or all all ignorant.

    Jon, why do you republicans post unemployment figures that show Bush left with unemployment at 7.8% and have an issue with it now being only .3% points higher? Why do you blame the democratic congress in 2007 when the recession has it's roots in the republican congress of the years before? Do you fools really believe that recessions happen overnite while the tooth fairy is putting dollars under pillows?

    Jon - Why do the liberals only talk about raising taxes on the most wealthy ... why dont they talk about every American family paying taxes ... even if it is only 5 or 10% ... 48% of American families do not pay taxes ...
    =========================================================================================
    It is how the Democrat Party buys votes. Why do you think Obama's support hovers around the same percentage of people that do not pay taxes and/or are government dependents?

    Also, why do people get a tax refund when in reality they get more money back than they paid. When people don't pay taxes, we need to stop giving them a refund.
    ========================================================================================
    It's called the new welfare system administered by and hidden in the tax code. Yes, the "progressive tax code" where now almost half the US "tax payers" pay nothing and progress toward government dependence. The ever shrinking tax paying minority will pay more and more to the point where the system will collapse because the people doing the paying will smarten up and go somewhere else. It is already starting to happen.

    Everyone pays taxes (sales, property…etc). What you meant to say that is some families do not pay federal income taxes. Some because they do not make enough to be taxed and some, like possibly Gov. Romney, because they utilize tax shelters. The '½ the country does not pay taxes' bit was been debunked months ago. Please try to keep up…

    "Tax everyone ... and lets stop the deductions."

    There's not a single person in this country who doesn't pay taxes, including illegal immigrants. Wrap your head around that truth. That some people escape INCOME TAX because their income is so low that they can barely feed their children is something you're going to have to learn to accept....unless you're offering to feed theri children? Are you offering? I'm sure a bunch of us here could very quickly and easily piont you to some websites where you can help do so? No? Then STFU.

    Stop this half of Americans don't pay taxes crap. BS! All on a payroll pay taxes. All who buy goods pay taxes. Income taxes are taxes that have always been scaled to... Income. Yes that's why it's called income taxes. If one doesn't have the income to live a mediocre existence they have no extra income to be taxed. If you look at our most successfull economic times in this country the rates on the top earners was up to 91%. Didn't hurt us at all, because all the wealth that was bring taxed wasn't going to get spent. It was the wealthy's extreme surplus that they gained off the backs of others. They can afford to pay without it hurting their or their children's future. Now the fact that over 40% pay little to no income taxes says a whole heap about how unequal the playing field has gotten. We've reduced the wealthy's tax rate over the years and what we've gained for it is a greater debt, fewer folks at the top with even larger sums of money, a shrinking middle class and poverty of the likes of 3rd world nations.

    "The ever shrinking tax paying minority will pay more and more to the point where the system will collapse because the people doing the paying will smarten up and go somewhere else. It is already starting to happen."

    Is that why taxes are, in fact, lower than they have been across the baord in the past 60+ years? Is that why not a single expert economist believes the absolute cartoon nonsense you just spewed? What's starting to happen is that the system is collapsing because it is being starved by the Bush tax cuts and excessive spending on wars and the defense budget. It's not collapsing because people are taxed too much. Believing that while tax rates are the lowest they've been in over half a century is 100% broken logic...a rationalization designed to help you warp the reality around you to explain away the fact that what you're really seeing is the result of the ideology you fervently and desperately wish to cling to instead of admitting it has failed. Trickle-down was a lie. Cutting taxes does not increase gov't revenue and it doesn't create jobs. Supply-side top-down economics is an absurd failure. THAT is what we're seeing and those of us who recognize it for what it is just hope that its death throes don't manage to do any permanent damage.

    Does it bother right wingnuts that I pay a 28% rate on my taxes, and that Mittens pays only 14%? It bothers me that he may even had no paid any taxes during some of those years when he only made $25 million.

    And it was the Reagan Republicans who set that system up in order to sell their "trickle down" theory to the public. You know, no one had ever heard of "trickle down theory" prior to the Reagan administration. Why? Because it was a catch phrase cooked up by one of press people to sell the idea of paying for a 50% tax cut for the top earners by using surplus funds in the Social Security fund, which was built by the middle class. "Oh, it goes to the rich now, but it will trickle down to the middle class and poor larger than ever." Imagine a snowball rolling down a mountain.

    So, you are trying to tell us that public policy changes have instantaneous impacts on the economy? Really? That is one of the dumbest things I have heard in a while. We have employed supply-side (trickle down) economics three times in our history – in the 1920's, the 1980's, and the 2000's. Each time, it has led to recession/depression. The lightest was the recession of 1990-1992 after 10 years of Reagan-Bush. The other two led to the two worst ecomomic downturns of the past century. Mitt Romney is proposing going back to exactly the same policies. How dumb is he? Or are we?

    Karl Rove Crossroad's lies aside, the truth is Romney would grossly increase deficits by $5 trillion while President Obama's plan reduces the deficit by $2 trillion.

    Where Obama's budget ALSO received ZERO votes. In 4 years not one single Democrat has voted for the budget's that Obama has submitted. Another very dubious record for Obama, besides all of his economic failures.

    We spend most of our defense budget defending countries that are supposed to be our allies.

    The Great Bush Recession began in late 2007 and lasted until June 2009. BTW, FY2009 belongs to George W. Bush. You ignore the fact that FY2009 includes the $700 billion TARP give away. TARP almost hit the FY2008 budget. The Rs voted it down on Sep. 28 and passed it on Oct. 2, 2008.

    Does your FY2011 figure, which is higher for some reason, does it include the fact that the Tea Party took over the House, which controls all spending?
