First lady, San Antonio mayor take big roles at convention

(CNN) – The speaker schedule for September's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte had two big names added Tuesday, when the event's organizers announced first lady Michelle Obama would speak on opening night and San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro would deliver the keynote address.

Both the first lady and Castro will speak on Tuesday, September 4. The convention committee said Castro's speech will mark the first time a keynote address is delivered by a Latino at a Democratic convention.

"As mayor, Julián Castro has worked tirelessly to move San Antonio forward by building its economy from the middle out, not the top down, by putting the city on a path to being a leader in the new energy economy and making innovative investments in education to prepare San Antonio's students for the jobs of the future," wrote Los Angeles Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa, who is the 2012 convention chairman. "That's the same vision forward for the middle class the President has, and it stands in stark contrast to Mitt Romney, who's ready to return us to the same policies that crashed our economy."

President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, launching him onto the national political stage. In 2008 former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner delivered the keynote at the Democratic Convention in Denver.

Michelle Obama also spoke on the opening day of the 2008 convention. In a statement Tuesday, Villaraigosa wrote the first lady was an "inspiration to millions of Americans."

"As the person who knows him best, she will offer unique insights into the President as a husband, father and a leader over the last four years," Villaraigosa wrote.

On Monday, Democrats announced that former President Bill Clinton would play a prominent role at the convention by giving a major speech and placing President Barack Obama's name into nomination.

The former president will give a primetime speech on Wednesday, September 5, in which he is expected to starkly lay out the differences in the economic policies of the two parties and describe why Obama is the best choice compared to presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, a Democratic source said.

Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Massachusetts, will also speak on Wednesday evening.

uh oh his last name is CASTRO! Beware of the far right making fun of it or using it as an attack line like they try to do with the president's middle name.

Is this really worthy news?! You mean to tell me that since her husband is sinking in the polls and Americans are starting to become aware of her snobbery and vindictiveness, now she's proud of America?! If you have any doubts, simply ask Oprah!

With my fellow Democrats and my beloved party hijacked by the fringe, hypocrisy knows no bounds.

If you continue to "Bend Forward", for a little more comfort wear "gobs" of Vaseline. And, of course, ENJOY!!!

@Wilson: The biggest problem with the comments section on CNN is too many people with lots of time on their hands and nothing to say. We get it: you hate democrats. Take it to the polls and save the broadband.

An independent study shows that 85% of our debt can be attributed to the Republicans in the past 30 years. Obama is spending less money per year than his predecessor. My right wing friends decry the "Redistribution of Wealth", but don't realize that redistribution has been up not down.

Well we will be able to see a lot of actress and actors, who don't have a brain to work other than to become character in movies. They are so liberal in Hollywood, surprises me anyone can say a few given words and become a celebrity. Not note worthy for a convention.

Yes, but which Castro will show up to give the speech. He has an identical twin. Both have switched for one another at events to cover for each other. Good to see the DNC turning a blind eye about this fact.

It is nice to see the leftist Democrat Party finally embrace Castro. No one better personifies the Democrat Party. Will the hall also include a Gay Pride rally complete with gay marriage ceremonies and guys prancing around scantily clad in their leathers? Yes, the Democrat Party, NOT the party of JFK....

Don't hate democrats in general, just some of them. When I read a post and it starts call republicans in general all kinds of derogatory names and insults, well, those democrats lose all credibility and them I have begun to hate.

I HOPE these 2 'big names' can explain why – LAST WEEK – Obama doubled down on his failed policy of borrowing money from the Chinese to GROW government spending instead of GROWING the Private sector and creating more jobs! To say nothing of INCREASING the deficit ! Hardly surprising CNN didn't mention THAT!

I HOPE they can explain why 80% of bundlers [donors] who raised more than $500k or more were appointed to posts in Obama's administration.

I HOPE they can explain why Obama has AVOIDED tackling the DEFICIT for 4 years?

I HOPE they can explain why Obama ignored the sloppy security at the UKOlympics and the threatened Border Control Agency strike that put world and AMERICAN athletes at risk – But slammed Romney for his concern?

I'm English and we were ALL amazed [but not surprised!] that Obama was too busy grubbing for campaign funds to bither about mere ATHLETES. Shame on him and WELL DONE Mr Romney!
And BGTW it IS my business – when you go down , you'll take us with you.

I wish they would let Bernie Sanders speak. I love that guy. Now he's one that talks truth...And is not afraid to tell it like it is...And it would be great to have an economic lesson 101 by Paul Krugman and let the American People really understand what the economic philosophy differences are between the two parties....Let them both have a spot to speak at the convention....

Sixteen states have set a limit on the number of prescription drugs they will cover for Medicaid patients. Here come Obama's death panels that supposedly don't exist. The left is so blind.

Where is the key note speech from the new gay wing of the Democrat Party? Are they keeping them in the closet or will they embrace them openly? Are you sure your very strong black support is going along with this new plank of the Democrat party? Looks like the black community will have to take a back seat to the hispanics and gays now. Nice to see how the Democrat Party just loves to chunk up and divide the American people into panderable segments. What ever happened to the one america that Obama spoke about?

Corporations wanted cheaper labor to make products so they shipped
jobs overseas, and destroyed the middle class.

Hey idiots, who is left to buy your products now ?
You wont hire until the economy improves,
but the economy wont improve till people start buying.
Nice catch 22 you created at our expense.

You are being self-descriptive, if you bothered to read anything besides CNN you would find that the 16 states had to do this because of Obama Care.

Sorry, but the bucket and mop are still being used to clean up the mess the GOP made of the economy and the budget by peeing on our legs and telling us it was wealth trickling-down. You'll have to wait in line.

Right after you explain why Mittens won't tell anyone who his bundlers are, champ. The only reason you and the rest of the mindless Teatrolls are even able to spew such misinformed nonsense is because Obama has been honest and transparent enough to release the names of his bundlers...something Mittens consistently refuses to do...along with refusing to release his tax returns...and destroying the records of the Utah Olympics....and destroying the records of his governorship of MA...along with his avoidance of providing any specifics whatsoever about his alleged "plans" to fix everything.

Please run with that. It worked so well for Mittens. Why don't you make a couple phone calls and see if you can get them to do some commercials about "the UK's sloppy security" at the Olympics? It'll be grand.

"I HOPE they can explain why Obama has AVOIDED tackling the DEFICIT for 4 years? "

You mean like by reducing deficit spending by hundreds of billions per year in comparison to his predecessor or restraining the growth in government spending to 1.3% per year on average, which is over 6 times less than what Reagan and Dubya gave us each year? Yeah...I hope it shoves that down your throats as well.

If you bothered to check your facts, then you would realize that they "opted out" of participating in "ObamaCare", which doesn't exist as far as I am concerned. The original remark was correct about "ObamaCare" but flat out wrong about the Affordable Care Act.

Yes, the remark was stupid. It showed a profound lack of understanding of what they were writing. Somehow, by not participating that somehow they were still participating and suffering the effects of that participation. Do you really want to defend a remark that shallow minded?
