Clinton to headline event for pro-Obama super PAC

(CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton will headline an event in August for a super PAC supportive of President Barack Obama, a spokesman for Priorities USA Action confirmed to CNN on Thursday.

The group, run by former Obama White House officials, has struggled to keep pace with Restore Our Future, the major super PAC supporting Mitt Romney.

No drought aid for farmers, ranchers as Congress breaks for summer

Washington (CNN) – Congress adjourned for the summer on Thursday without passing a relief package for farmers and ranchers suffering through the most widespread drought since the 1930s.

The only thing the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Democratic-controlled Senate have agreed on is that they'll take the issue up again after Labor Day.

Congress closes loophole in stock trading law after CNN report

(CNN) - House Republicans have been forced to close a potential loophole on their much-touted insider trading law - a loophole CNN uncovered and reported about last month.

Because of CNN's report, the Senate and House passed new legislation Thursday to close the loophole that could have allowed family members of some lawmakers to profit from inside information.

Political blame game plays out after Ohio coal mine operation shuts down

(CNN) - The leader of a shuttering Ohio coal mining operation on Friday blamed the Obama administration for the shutdown and for hurting the economy generally with he called a "war on coal," an assertion the White House pushed back on as false and misleading.

OhioAmerican Energy, which is a subsidiary of Murray Energy Corporation, issued a statement announcing its coal mining operations near Brilliant, in southeastern Ohio, would be closing five years earlier than expected.

Adelson gets apology, retraction from DCCC

Washington (CNN) – Facing the threat of a lawsuit from Nevada billionaire and Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, an apology and a retraction was issued Thursday evening by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The DCCC said in its retraction:

"In press statements issued on June 29 and July 2, 2012, the DCCC made unsubstantiated allegations that attacked Sheldon Adelson, a supporter of the opposing party. This was wrong. The statements were untrue and unfair and we retract them. The DCCC extends its sincere apology to Mr. Adelson and his family for any injury we have caused."

Poll: Romney struggles to improve favorability rating

(CNN) - A new poll released Thursday indicates Mitt Romney's favorability rating dropped slightly in the past month.

According to the Pew Research Center survey, 37% of respondents said they hold a favorable view of the presumptive GOP nominee, compared to 41% in June.

Romney promises 12 million jobs in four years

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Mitt Romney's economic advisers issued a rosy set of projections Thursday that predict 12 million new jobs and a sharp economic expansion if the Republican candidate were to capture the White House.

The paper, authored by four conservative economists, projects that the Romney plan would add between 0.5% and 1% per year in gross domestic product growth over the next decade.

First on CNN: Massive $77 million ad time buy for Obama

Washington (CNN) – The Obama campaign has taken the extraordinary step of booking $77 million in additional ad time starting Friday and running through Election Day, a Republican ad buying source told CNN.

The new buy is for thirty second broadcast TV spots that will run in eight battleground states.

Romney to Reid: 'Put up or shut up'

(CNN) - Mitt Romney on Thursday pushed back against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's allegations that the presumptive GOP nominee has not been paying his taxes.

"It's time for Harry to put up or shut up," Romney said on Sean Hannity's radio show.
