(CNN) - She wasn't a mistake after all.
A week after asserting Sen. John McCain made a mistake in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate, former Vice President Dick Cheney clarified he thought the selection process itself was at fault.

"It wasn't aimed so much at Gov. Palin as it was against the basic process that McCain used," Cheney said in an interview set to air on Fox News Monday, according to a transcript posted by TIME magazine.
Cheney continued, "My point basically dealt with the process in terms of that basic requirement, is this person prepared to step in to be president of the United States when they're picked? And it was my judgment – I was asked if I thought the McCain process in '08 had been well done or was it a mistake and I said I thought it was a mistake."
He added, "The process didn't meet the standards I would like to see our candidate pursue when they pick a running mate."
Cheney made his original remarks last Sunday, saying he thought Palin failed to meet the number one requirement for a vice president: a readiness to step into the top job if needed.
"Based on her background, she was only governor for two years, I don't think she passed that test of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake," Cheney said in an interview with ABC News.
McCain himself pushed back the next day, saying he was proud of Palin and what the pair accomplished four years ago.
"I'm always glad to get comments four years later," McCain added sarcastically.
The former Alaska governor slammed Cheney Tuesday, saying the former vice president was being influenced by the "lame stream media."
Appearing to reference a now-infamous incident from 2006 when Cheney accidentally shot a campaign contributor on a quail hunt, Palin said sarcastically that Cheney was not known for his "misfires."
"Seeing as how Dick – excuse me, Vice President Cheney – never misfires, then evidently he's quite convinced that what he had evidently read about me by the lame stream media, having been written, what I believe is a false narrative over the last four years, evidently Dick Cheney believed that stuff and that's a shame," Palin said in an appearance on Fox News.

They're both loathsome, worthless people and a disgrace to the country. The only difference is that Cheney actually screwed things up as Vice President and Palin got came close to getting a chance. The sooner both are forgotten about the better I'll like it.
He souldn't have to clarify his statement, it speaks for itself, she was a huge mistake. Period!!!!!
2 wrongs don't make a right!
So.........Was it the process who said all of that stupid stuff? The process who quit her job as governor? I think he is giving too much power to the process.
Satan and his daughter for sure.
Ok Dick so it's the process? So the inadequate process came up with the inadequate vp candidate? So then a better process would have chosen a better and more qualified choice? Sounds like what he originally said!
Along with a new heart – the doctors should have replace his brain
Your administration put us in this mess.
It just never ends, does it?
Ok WTHEvea...............................you had it correct the first time.
@my views-
Yuu neglected to mention that he was also a U.S. senator before becoming president. You need to factcheck before blathering.
Two people without a lick of common sense or social justice between them. Maybe they should plan a hunting trip together.
"Walk it back.. walk it back.. " should be a dance named after Republicans.
These dudes and their ever changing, self serving positions..
That old fool start losing it
Since Cheney retracted his statement, i wonder if Palin will retract hers.
I'm sure they will spin this issue as something that the 'lamestream' media took out of context.
Palin says,–
"he's quite convinced that what he had evidently read about me by the lame stream media, having been written, what I believe is a false narrative over the last four years, ".
I think it hard to believe that Cheney only watched the news and wasn't at all clued into what was going on in the republican party VP nomination process that he himself lead just 8 years earlier.
I may not be that smart but I know there is the process and the result. If the process is flawed then inevitably so is the result.
dog eating it's vomit
The process and Palin were both WRONG! No amount of spin by Darth Vader will change that. He had it right the first time–her selection was a BIG mistake!
Cheney and Palin – two big-time members of the Republican party. Can' think of any better reason to vote Democratic.
Hilarious and unsettling at the same time. He needed to walk his criticism back, to assuage the Palin and McCain fans who were offended. Now they're all just one big happy, completely deranged family of dishonest, destructive egomaniacs who have done tremendous damage to America while wrapping themselves in the flag.
Boy Oh Boy these Republican/TPers are on a trip without a suitcase. Vote them all out and please do not vote for Mittens(Robme, Liar, cheater, crook) Romney. Theses fools have lost there everlasting minds. They really think that people are stupid to believe this BS they are spewing just to regain power. Wake up America please wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

" Well Obama has never even been.............and he got the job of president which means Sarah Palin more than Obama could have taken over if she would have had to. "
SERIOUSLY...after watching Palin for 4 years out of office with no power, you would rather have her than Obama!!! You must be drinking some real strong kool-aid and just thinking of it increases my heart rate.
Maybe Cheney thinks he has a chance for a little, well you know if he makes up with her.
..
MR. CHENEY'S STANDARDS ? WHAT STANDARD'S ?
..
ATTACKING THE WRONG COUNTRY, IRAQ, and SENDING THE U.S. ECONOMY INTO THE DEEPEST PART OF THE OCEAN ?

This is a SERIOUS JOKE, RIGHT........THAT THE teanut-gop has STANDARDS ?
..
I think he is afraid of her and her vicious tongue.
This is just to take the spat out of hte public eye. Cheney really meant what he said the first time and he was 100% correct.
