Cheney: McCain's process was a mistake, not Palin

(CNN) – She wasn't a mistake after all.

A week after asserting Sen. John McCain made a mistake in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate, former Vice President Dick Cheney clarified he thought the selection process itself was at fault.

"It wasn't aimed so much at Gov. Palin as it was against the basic process that McCain used," Cheney said in an interview set to air on Fox News Monday, according to a transcript posted by TIME magazine.

Cheney continued, "My point basically dealt with the process in terms of that basic requirement, is this person prepared to step in to be president of the United States when they're picked? And it was my judgment – I was asked if I thought the McCain process in '08 had been well done or was it a mistake and I said I thought it was a mistake."

He added, "The process didn't meet the standards I would like to see our candidate pursue when they pick a running mate."

Cheney made his original remarks last Sunday, saying he thought Palin failed to meet the number one requirement for a vice president: a readiness to step into the top job if needed.

"Based on her background, she was only governor for two years, I don't think she passed that test of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake," Cheney said in an interview with ABC News.

McCain himself pushed back the next day, saying he was proud of Palin and what the pair accomplished four years ago.

"I'm always glad to get comments four years later," McCain added sarcastically.

The former Alaska governor slammed Cheney Tuesday, saying the former vice president was being influenced by the "lame stream media."

Appearing to reference a now-infamous incident from 2006 when Cheney accidentally shot a campaign contributor on a quail hunt, Palin said sarcastically that Cheney was not known for his "misfires."

"Seeing as how Dick – excuse me, Vice President Cheney – never misfires, then evidently he's quite convinced that what he had evidently read about me by the lame stream media, having been written, what I believe is a false narrative over the last four years, evidently Dick Cheney believed that stuff and that's a shame," Palin said in an appearance on Fox News.

I've never seen such an old guy be so adept at the moonwalk- rightie style. Usually these walkbacks happen on fox news at 3am or get buried altogether. (Oh, sorry, it was a "clarification".)

Keep eating your own. There's plenty of hate on that side to go around.

Can you invite Norquist on your next hunting trip too?

What was the name of that show that was (briefly) on networkTV, with Geena Davis as the VP who is suddenly faced with becoming President when the President himself dies in office? Was it "Commander In Chief"?
Anyway, I recall the Donald Sutherland character telling her, (to try to get her to step down), "You were selected as his running mate not for your qualifications, madam... It was a STUNT!"
Years later, life would imitate art, as they say...

The Cheneyization/Palinization of the GOP has caused this once-great political party to be a joke and a farce–sad.

The idea that anyone takes an "adult" who says "lamestream media," without irony, seriously is amazing to me. How Palin is maintaining anyone's attention is beyond me. She should have been gone with all the other reality TV trash from years ago. Dick Cheney is just evil and we shouldn't be talking to him or caring what he thinks either.

Dang – all of the Republicans FLIP-FLOP and they think the American people are STUPID!!! How can the PROCESS be flawed when in the PROCESS, they decided to pick Palin... So what Cheney is saying is when Romney picks his 2nd and they lose in November, the PROCESS that picked Romney's 2nd was flawed????????? Really? Gimme a BREAK!

Obama 2012 – The Only Trusted Way Forward and the 2nd is already picked!!!

Any process that leads one to think picking Sarah Palin is even remotely a good idea is beyond a mistake. It's plain lunacy.

Liar. He should just say that he meant every word of it and that is why he said it in the first place. I watched when he said it and he was very clear about his meaning.

So is flip flopping a requirement to be a member of the rethuglican/bagger party or does it just rub off?

I still get a laugh out of them using 'Barracuda' by Heart to introduce Palin. The chorus begins ' If the real thing don't do the trick, you better make up something quick'. Don't think they vetted the song either....
