Romney pauses for Sikh temple shooting victims

(CNN) – At the start of a campaign event Tuesday, Mitt Romney held a moment of silence for victims of the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin earlier in the week.

"The tragedy is even more profound because the Sikh religion and the Sikh people are such peaceable, loving individuals," the presumptive GOP presidential nominee said.

Carter to address Democratic convention

(CNN) - Former President Jimmy Carter will deliver remarks via video at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina this September, the convention's committee announced Tuesday.

"Rosalynn and I regret that we will be unable to be at the Democratic Convention this year in Charlotte. However, we remain steadfast in our support for President Obama and the progress he will make in the next four years," Carter, 87, said in a statement released by the committee.

VP contenders in the field for Romney

Washington (CNN) - Two top vice presidential contenders will campaign for Mitt Romney in battleground states, two Republican sources said.

Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio will go to Colorado on Wednesday, appearing as President Barack Obama arrives in the state for a two-day campaign swing. The Portman event is part of the Romney campaign "bracketing" strategy to counter Obama's message on trips.

Koch brothers slam 'guy who makes obscene gestures with a monkey'

(CNN) - Actor Zach Galifianakis may be known for his less-than family-friendly sense of humor, but billionaires David and Charles Koch demonstrated Tuesday they don't find him so funny.

The comedian is co-starring with Will Ferrell in the upcoming comedy, "The Campaign," which features a pair of wealthy donors called the "Motch brothers," played by Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow.

Crossroads going up with new batch of Senate ads

Washington (CNN) - A top independent conservative group is going up with a new round of television commercials in five states in the battle for control of the Senate.

Crossroads GPS confirms to CNN that it will spend $4.2 million to run TV ads in Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada and Virginia. The group, which was co-founded by Karl Rove, says the spots start running Wednesday and will air through next Tuesday.

Washington (CNN) - Republican sources say they're in a Catch-22 situation on how to reply to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's claims that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney went 10 years without paying taxes.

They understand that they're taking Reid's bait and that responding to his unsubstantiated claims against Romney to keeps alive the issue of Romney's refusing to release his tax returns.

(CNN) - In the battle for the state of Washington's governorship, Tuesday's primary seems to be just the warm-up act.

Polls suggest that both Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna and Democrat Jay Inslee, a former eight-term congressman, are expected to breeze by seven other candidates and face off in November in the fight to succeed two-term Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire, who decided against running for re-election.

Pro-Obama super PAC links Romney to death of former steelworker's wife

(CNN) – Priorities USA Action, a super PAC supportive of President Barack Obama, released a new ad Tuesday, tying Mitt Romney to the death of a former GST Steel worker's wife after the employee lost his job when the plant closed down.

Romney's former private equity firm, Bain Capital, acquired GST Steel in 1993, but the company went bankrupt in 2001, two years after Romney ceased day-to-day oversight of Bain.

Democratic Convention touts first ever mobile app

(CNN) – The Democratic National Convention says it’s launching its first ever official convention mobile app for smart phones to give what it says will be more ways for Americans to engage during the convention, which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina the first week of September.

The Democratic National Convention Committee says the app will hit stores Tuesday and will provide more ways for people to participate in the convention either in person or virtually.

Santorum, Bush, Paul to speak at GOP convention

(CNN) - Rick Santorum, who emerged as Mitt Romney's fiercest competitor for the Republican presidential nomination, will speak at the Republican National Convention, a senior GOP official tells CNN.

The former Pennsylvania senator is one of four Republicans including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, who will be announced Tuesday as primetime convention speakers. They join seven others who Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced Monday would address the convention.
