Poll: Romney's unfavorability rating on the rise

(CNN) – Less than three months before Election Day, a new poll released Wednesday indicates Mitt Romney is still struggling with favorability ratings.

According to the ABC News/Washington Post survey, 49% of Americans have an unfavorable view of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, while 40% see him in a favorable light.

The poll also shows that Romney's unfavorability rating has increased since May, when 45% had a negative view of the Republican candidate. According to the poll's release, Romney is "laboring under the lowest personal popularity ratings for a presumptive presidential nominee in midsummer election-year polls back to 1984."

Wednesday's results are in line with a Pew Research Center poll from last week, which found Romney's favorability rating had dropped slightly in the past month, with 37% saying they held a positive view of Romney in July, compared to 41% in June.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has higher positive ratings than his Republican challenger in the new ABC News/Washington Post survey, with 53% of Americans saying they view the president favorably, while 43% say they hold an unfavorable opinion.

But among registered voters, Obama's numbers fall to 49% favorable vs. 47% unfavorable. While the number drops, it's still more positive than Romney's score among registered voters: 42% favorable vs. 50% unfavorable.

Obama also has an advantage over Romney among registered independent voters, leading his opponent 46% to 38%.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul downplayed the new results Wednesday morning, predicting the former Massachusetts' governor's ratings will go up as more voters get to know him.

She also pointed to recent polls that give Romney an advantage over the president when voters are asked which candidate would best handle the economy.

In fact, a new Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll released Wednesday indicates Romney has a ten point advantage over Obama in the crucial swing state of Colorado on questions about the economy, with voters split in two other battleground states: Virginia and Wisconsin.

"The more people learn about Mitt Romney, the more they are going to like him," Saul said on CNN's "Starting Point." "President Obama has not been able to get the job done, and that's why middle class Americans are suffering so much."

Hitting back, Obama's deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said on the same program Wednesday that Romney's favorability ratings have "dropped like a hot potato" since the GOP primary season.

"(Saul) is absolutely correct. They are getting to know Mitt Romney and they aren't liking what they're seeing," Cutter said.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cell phone, questioning 1,026 adults between August 1 and August 5. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

The lies put out by the Obama regime using their control of the liberal media are obviously having an effect. We don't talk about jobs, the economy, or issues that really matter, LIke CNN, the liberal media highlights Ms. Romney's horse rather than the fact that Obama has not met with his jobs council, not enacted the recommendations of his debt reduction committee, or has played 104 rounds of golf in three and a half years.

No surprise here! Look at the repuglicans rating in congress which is in the tank too! Repuglican hypocrisy is at an all-time high in America! Mitt signs into law a healthcare mandate, now he say it's unconstitutional and demands repeal of a Healthcare plan he was the "father" of and similarly implemented in Massachusetts! Repuglican spin machine wants this to a non-issue, like the, evaporation of 1/2 trillion surplus, -8.9 GDP, 11 trillion national debt, 1.3 trillion deficit, 2.8 trillion in tax cuts (unpaid for)2 Wars (unpaid for), Medicare prescription plan (unpaid for), 3 trillion borrowed from China, a Wall Street, Banking, Auto, Mortgage crisis’s, losing over 800,000 jobs monthly and a economy on the brink of depression when President Obama took office! Repuglican spin is that this economy belongs to Obama! Well, when this country is out the economic pitfall started under George Bush, I will agree!

No surprise here. I don't see nothing wrong with negative attack ads as long as they have truth and facts supporting them. That has not been the case with the Romney campaign. They're running ads taking the President's words out of context and in some cases flat out lying. Just look at what he said about the President's stance on welfare. Flat out lie. What I think is really hurting his campaign however is his support among women. The ad running showing Willard stating he'll get rid of Planned Parenthood is having an effect and not in a good way. Not to mention that Willard is just fake and people can see through the phoniness. "I'm picking up some hardware stuff." Really? When's the last time you saw Willard milton Romney in a Home Depot or a Lowes? Give me a break.

Romney is a creepy, entitled snob. The more Americans see of him, the more we dislike him and the better Obama looks.

Romney's campaign is based on the notion that because of what he did at Bain he understands the economy. It's perfectly reasonable to examine what his experience at Bain really taught him. After all, Bain wasn't in the business of creating jobs, it was in the business of making money

The high unemployement is due to people like romney out sourcing that's why middle class Americans are suffering so much.

How can anyone like a candidate who says our Government isn't transparent enough .. yet, is the most secretive about his own doings. So, no, if Mitt Romney is this bad about secrets now, then he won't be any better in office. Not a man I trust.

Really?! After months of non-stop mudslinging, mischaracterizing accurate statements as "gaffes" and giving credence to an absurd claims that he hasn't paid taxes in a decade and everything else in between, we're supposed to be surprised by this poll if it's even accurate? The media is waging all-out war against Mitt Romney to help Barack Obama win re-election; if you believe otherwise you're either naive or in denial.

No matter how you slice the pie, Obama comes out way ahead of Romney. If it is about the economy, why isn't Romney in the lead? Why is he polling so low? Because America was watching the republican leadership obstructionist loom and doom propaganda machine creating chaotic situation from out of thin air. Coupled with their underhanded attempt to sabotage the economic recovery the entire time. In the end "We The Real American People" will judge, convict and throw the republican bums out with Romney the Snake Oil Salesman.

I think Saul had better think before she speaks. The reason Romney's ratings are going down is exactly because people are getting to know who he is. A pathetic liar and flip flopper. Maybe Harry Reid is right and he has not paid any taxes for 10 years and that is why he won't reveal his tax forms. Republicans should demand that he does if they ever want to be believed again.

I doubt people will ever get to know Romney, he can't even release his tax records.... Yet we are supposed to get to know him? He has been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, I think he ought to get to know what it is like to be in poverty.

If the GOP could pick someone else they would in a heart beat!! John McCain did not pick him as a VP because he did not like him, and he did not pay taxes for 10 years!!
