Romney's short list: Is Ryan ready to run?

Editor's note: The 2012 presidential race is John King's seventh campaign. With presumptive Republican candidate Mitt Romney set to pick his running mate in the coming days, CNN's chief national correspondent looks at those believed to be in the running to be his potential vice president. King profiled former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Wednesday and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman on Thursday. Scheduling conflicts prevented Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan from sitting down to an interview for this story.

WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - For Paul Ryan, debating Joe Biden might feel like a bit of a demotion.

He has, after all, been at the center of the budget debate with President Barack Obama and the entire Democratic Party for several years now, including some memorable, direct exchanges with the president.

  1. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of OBAMA FAILURE

We need competent and experienced people in the Whitehouse that know how to get this country back to work and back on a solid financial footing. Obama has shown he is totally clueless and not up to the task. His ideas are nothing but old ideas from the 1930's and the old Soviet Union, make work government projects and centralized government planning which extends now to your healthcare thanks to Obamacare.

Romney and Ryan have proven they know the problems and have the solutions. The longer the problems are ignored and made worse by Obama and the Democrats, the more painful the solutions will be. Just ask the people of Greece. So we can get to work and fix this country in January with Romney and Ryan or continue down the road to ruin with Obama and Biden. The choice is yours America.

I'd like to see Paul Ryan go up against Joe Biden for sure. Joe will wipe the floor with him in a heart beat.

  3. IF YOU SIGNED GROVER'S PLEDGE, YOU ARE A TRAITOR TO THE U.S.

Ryan's ready, however is policies are not. I think Newton Leroy Gingrich said “I don’t think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering.”

U.S. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan said the government’s loss of its AAA rating would raise the cost of mortgages and car loans.

Paul Ryan was wrong. Almost a year later, mortgage rates have dropped to record lows, the government’s borrowing costs have eased
Warren Buffett, shrugging off the downgrade: “In Omaha, the U.S. is still triple-A,” Buffett said in 2011 amid the uproar. “In fact, if there were a quadruple-A rating, I’d give the U.S. that.”

Ryan needs to look at what he predicted a year ago .
He isn't ready for the big time .

It would be nice because that would mean that Ryan couldn't run for his House seat in most cases.

  9. 89 Days until Obama is RE-ELECTED

We need to keep the competent and experienced people in the White house that know how to get this country back to work and back on a solid financial footing. Willard has shown he is totally clueless and CLEARLY not up to the task as he can't even make up his mind what his position is on anything. His ideas are nothing but old ideas from the 1920's where corporations ruled, there were no government regulations and people were exploited.

Obama and Biden have proven they know the problems and have the solutions. The longer the problems are ignored and made worse by the Grand Obstructionist Party's lack of motion, the more painful the solutions will be. Just ask the people of Greece -what they are suffering now it due to many years of Conservative rule. We can continue on with the work of fixing this country that Obama started or continue down the road to ruin by electing Mitt the Twitt and the GOBP cronies. The choice is yours America. Make the RIGHT choice... vote Obama 2012.

If this election is about Jobs and the Economy (and not about Romney's wealth or ability to cause cancer), then I believe Ryan would be the best choice. He would actually be a choice to fix America rather than get votes....

If Ryan is trying to hammer President Obama over discretionary spending then he is the GOP's master of deception. Discretionary spending is a miniscule part of the Federal budget. Increase it by 84%, decrease it by 84%, keep it the same, it doesn't make much difference in the bottom line. Last I heard we spend more on military bands. But of course Ryan wouldn't get any political points for suggesting we cut those, and political points, not fiscal responsibility, is what Paul Ryan is all about.

Right, that is exactly what happened... Think again. "Can I call you Joe" because Palin was too dumb to remember his name was Senator Biden. Think about what Palin did when she did not know the answer to a question, "I not going to answer that"... She dumb down the process...

Ryan himself might be ready to run but he can't hide from his budget proposal that will surely put a noose around his neck and hang Romney right along with him.

As usual President Obama finds an excuse to escape engaging in a conversation that requires knowledge of economics because he did not study economics as did Ryan which exactly what happened when Ryan asked the president a question. Once again, Obama will pass questions to those in his staff that can answer on his behalf because he does not know, he cannot have a finance, economics conversation, debate, etc.... with anyone. This is the reason Obama joked about Ryan having a crew that consisted of his wife and children, to ridicule Ryan, to have Ryan lose credibility with others because Obama knew he was going to be confronted with true mathematics, accounting, economics questions which he cannot participate in. Obama has no idea about economics, finance, he didn't study it, Ryan did study economics and has a BA in Economics and a BA in Political Science.

A right wingnut posted that Mormoney and Ryan know the problems and have the solutions. The truth is, republicans have caused the problems, and refuse to give up the plans that led to our first great depression, our Bush republican near depression, and those same GOP policies have further troubled European economies who tried the failed republican policies.

Sure, Paul Ryan is a perfect candidate for VP. I can't wait hearing him explain how privatizing Social Security, and converting Medicare to a (much reduced) voucher program goes down with seniors, and people close to retirement age. Especially when he further explains that doing away with these vital social programs has to be done so that Mr. Romney can continue to give the richest 1% of Americans tax cuts they don't need, and that the rest of us can't afford.

Ryan did study economics and has a BA in Economics and a BA in Political Science.

If I'm not mistaken Ryan had that BA in Economics and Political Science all during the GW Bush years. What was he thinking back then ?

In 2002, Ryan voted in favor of the Iraq War resolution, authorizing President George W. Bush to use military force in Iraq.

  22. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of OBAMA FAILURE

So if Obama gets re-elected, and the country contiues his great streak of record unemployment above 8% for another 4 years and the country keeps adding $1.5 TRILLION to the debt bringing it to $22 TRILLION which is about 145% of our GDP (even above Greece's debt to GDP ratio!), WHO WILL HE BLAME THEN????? He has brought forth NO PLANS to change ANY of this from happening, NONE, ZERO. He cannot continue to print money for another 4 years!! You will need a wheelbarrow full of money to buy a bag of groceries.

The country IS near the end of the line people. There is no wiggle room left between us and the edge of the financial cliff Obama has us on. Four more years of Obama and it is OVER the cliff. The clueless socialists in Greece thought they could get away with the same thing forever as well. How is that working out for them now?

Just fishing here, Obama 2012- but please explain in just a few words, just how Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan are "proving" they have the solutions to the economic disaster of Mr. Bush's administration. They are proposing almost exactly the same economic package that has virtually destroyed the middle class, bankrupted the country; and created a huge chasm between the rich and poor- never mind the 2007 economic melt-down.

Obama 2012- How clueless is the GOP (or you for that matter) that they think they can get away with raising taxes on the poor and middle class; cut the social safety nets of Social Security and Medicare to ribbons; they cut taxes for the rich and continue to build the debt? The Republicans ruined the economy, not Obama.
