Emotional homecoming for Ryan

Waukesha, Wisconsin (CNN) – The Republican presidential ticket capped off a whirlwind swing-state tour with an emotional outdoor rally Sunday night in Wisconsin.

Supporters in Rep. Paul Ryan's home state gave their native son a hero's welcome, prompting the vice presidential candidate to wipe away tears and let loose a stream of local references that delighted his audience.

Ryan will release two years of tax returns; says he gave Romney team 'several years'

(CNN) – Rep. Paul Ryan said Sunday he gave Mitt Romney's vice presidential vetting team "several years" of personal income tax returns, and that he would release two years of those returns to the public – the same number as Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee.

Democrats, as well as some Republicans, have called on Romney to release more than his 2010 and 2011 information, saying the voting public is entitled to know more about a candidate's financial history. Romney has consistently responded by saying his level of disclosure is beyond the legal amount and that two years give a good reflection of his tax situation.

Palin will not speak at GOP convention

(CNN) - Sarah Palin will not speak at the 2012 Republican National Convention, the party's 2008 vice presidential nominee said in a statement Sunday.

"This year is a good opportunity for other voices to speak at the convention and I'm excited to hear them," Palin wrote. "As I've repeatedly said, I support Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in their efforts to replace President Obama at the ballot box, and I intend to focus on grassroots efforts to rally Independents and the GOP base to elect Senate and House members so a wise Congress is ready to work with our new President to get our country back on the right path."

19 months after mass shooting, ex-Rep. Giffords moves back to Tucson

(CNN) – Nineteen months after she and 18 others were shot at a political event - six of them fatally - former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned home Sunday to her native southern Arizona, her husband said.

Giffords has spent most of the time since the January 8, 2011, attack at medical facilities in Houston recovering from being shot in the head at a "Congress On Your Corner" event outside a Safeway supermarket in Tucson. She's returned to her hometown several times since that shooting, though not permanently until now.

Romney, Ryan field Medicare question in first joint interview

(CNN) – In their first joint interview as the 2012 Republican ticket, Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan on Sunday addressed questions about Ryan's Medicare proposal, which at least one critic says would "end Medicare as we know it" and others have speculated could present Romney electoral challenges in senior citizen-rich Florida.

Ryan, however, has said major changes are necessary to rein in levels of federal spending on the program which premium payments and payroll taxes cannot cover. He used a personal example to make the point in his Sunday interview.

In hometown to raise campaign cash, Obama targets Romney’s running mate

Chicago (CNN) – President Barack Obama congratulated Paul Ryan Sunday for being selected as Mitt Romney's running mate, but cut short the plaudits to blast the Wisconsin congressman's economic proposals.

"I know him. I welcome him to the race," Obama said at a fund-raiser in Chicago. "Congressman Ryan is a decent man. He is a family man. He is an articulate spokesman for Gov. Romney's vision. But it's a vision that I fundamentally disagree with."

The race to define Paul Ryan

High Point, North Carolina (CNN) - Ask Sarah Palin. It happens every campaign cycle. And now, the race to define Rep. Paul Ryan has begun.

Controversial anti-Romney ad remains in spotlight Sunday

(CNN) – Political figures on both sides of the aisle sought distance on Sunday from a video produced by the main super PAC supporting President Barack Obama's reelection – an ad which juxtaposes an uninsured woman's death with the closure of a steel mill owned by Romney's firm.

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz went as far as to say "I have no idea of the political affiliation of folks who are associated with that super PAC," though she acknowledged the group's leanings in an online post after the show.

Romney paints Ryan as reluctant Washingtonian - though Ryan spent career in nation's capital

Mooresville, North Carolina (CNN) - On Sunday Mitt Romney painted his new running mate, a seven-term congressman elected at age 28, as a reluctant Washingtonian who put aside his personal ambitions to serve his country.

Ryan's biography, however, paints a different picture of the vice presidential candidate's career.

Republicans say Ryan's Medicare plan not a deal breaker for seniors

(CNN) - Republicans heralding their party's vice presidential candidate said Sunday that Rep. Paul Ryan's proposed overhaul of Medicare would be a boon to their chances in November, rather than a liability – though they quickly pointed out Mitt Romney would advance his own budget policy as president.

"It is the Romney-Ryan ticket, and as president, Romney will be putting forth his own budget," Senior Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie said on CNN's "State of the Union."
