Polls: Was Ryan a good pick for Romney?

(CNN) - So what do Americans think about the announcement of Paul Ryan as the Republican vice presidential nominee?

According to a poll conducted the day after presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney named the House Budget chairman as his running mate, Americans may not be all that impressed. But another new survey indicates that Ryan's favorable rating has jumped.

A USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Sunday and released Monday indicates that 39% of the public sees Romney's choice of Ryan as excellent or pretty good, with 42% saying it's a fair or poor pick, and nearly one in five not having an opinion.

By comparison, 46% of registered voters, a slightly smaller pool, said that Sarah Palin was an excellent or pretty good choice immediately after Sen. John McCain of Arizona named the Alaska governor as the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee. Thirty-seven percent said she was a fair or poor choice and 17% had no opinion.

Forty-seven percent of registered voters said Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware was an excellent or pretty good choice immediately after Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois named Biden as his running mate four years ago. One in three said Biden was a fair or poor choice and 20% had no opinion.

According to the new survey, nearly half those questioned said Ryan was qualified to serve as president if something happened to Romney, with just under three in ten saying the seven term congressman from Wisconsin was not qualified.

Will the Ryan pick change minds?

The poll indicates that 17% say having Ryan on the Republican ticket makes them more likely to vote for Romney, with 12% saying it makes them less likely to cast a ballot for the presumptive GOP nominee. But two-thirds say the naming of Ryan as Romney's running mate has no effect on their vote.

As expected, Ryan's addition to the GOP ticket is boosting Americans knowledge of the congressman, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll also released Monday. Forty-five percent of those questioned in the survey Wednesday through Friday expressed no opinion of Ryan, but that dropped 15 points to 30% for those questioned on Saturday and Sunday, after Ryan was unveiled as the Romney's running mate.

And Ryan's favorable rating jumped an equal 15 points, from 23% on Wednesday through Friday, to 38% on Saturday and Sunday. And among independent voters, the poll indicates that Ryan's favorable rating jumped 20 points, from 19% Wednesday through Friday, to 39% over the weekend.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted Wednesday through Sunday (August 8-12), with 1,189 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The USA Today/Gallup was conducted Sunday (August 12), with 1,006 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

I doubt 90% of the people they polled even knew who Paul Ryan is and couldn't pick him out in a lineup. Talk about a totally useless poll. Of course this is coming from the left wing media so if it suits their bias, they will run with it.

I think by Romney picking Ryan for V.P. ? They gave Pres.Obama his re-election on a Silver Platter. Ryan is a extreme T-Party republican. His Budget is too severe in all aspecs. Their vision is clearly not for the middle class but instead leands dramitacly to the wealthy and Big Oil and Corporations. Joe Biden layed it out very clearly today in N.Carolina and it was honest and factful.

The more you know, the less there is to like. But so many of his critics will die off much sooner, from poor or unaffordable health care insurance if he is elected, that his likeability must improve over time.

Hard to judge, since it probably wasn't 'a Romney pick'. He was tanking in the polls, and Rove, Norquist et al. were getting nervous over the hue and cry for Romney's tax returns – so they went for the candidate most likely to suck up to the Tea Partiers and evangelical whackjobs who are throwing all their money at them. Romney had about as much say in his VP pick as McCain did, i.e., none). However, speaking as a sane grownup and a Democrat, hey! thanks for playing.

Once people figure out how smart Ryan is they will like him. Now Romney needs to get to Florida and explain to the senior citizens that obamacare has taken 800 million dollars out of Medicare.

"I doubt 90% of the people they polled even knew who Paul Ryan is and couldn't pick him out in a lineup. "

That would be bad for you...very bad...and would make him a very bad pick. Make up your mind. Was this a good pick or a bad one? Can't have it both ways just because polls aren't saying what you want to hear.

I can't wait to see Wiilard and Ryan lose in November. This will be a landslide for Obama. The Christian Right will not vote for mormon cult follower and giant flip flopper who creat the individual mandate, assault a Gay man, said he doesn't worry about the poor and loves to fire people. Ryan only wants to cut social secirity and medicare and privatize everything so the middle class even pays more to the corporate elite. Watch out landslide for President Obama the man who killed Bin Laden. I wonder when Willard will go to kolob and Ryan will go to purgatory.

If Rassmussen or FOX conducted the poll and found a similar result, would you accept it? Doubtful, considering the fact you look for affirmation, not information. Kathy Hochul won a congressional seat in what had been considered a safe GOP district by running against Ryan's plan. Its a safe bet that Romney's numbers' amonst independents won't budge in mis favor, and will likely go down.
