Ryan's foreign policy views shaped by his budget battles

Washington (CNN) – As the chief architect of the Republican budget plan, presidential nominee Mitt Romney's choice for vice president, Paul Ryan, is well-known in budget policy circles around Washington, but his 14 years on Capitol Hill have left a much smaller paper trail when it comes to foreign policy statements and achievements.

That said, Ryan's focus during his seven terms in Congress on balancing the federal budget and extolling the virtues of fiscal restraint seems to have also formed the center of his thinking on foreign policy issues, which seems to hue to the classic Republican view of the world.

My views, Biden came on the ticket with plenty of foreign affairs knowledge, while he served in Congress.
As it stands, :resident Obama is well versed in foreign policy

You are still not telling me what makes president Obama well versed in foreign policy???? his childhood experience in Indonesia, he lived mainly in Hawaii, okay 1 year in Seattle while his mom went to the university when he was born. What makes Obama well versed???? I am a foreigner, U.S. Citizen and am very interested what makes an American well versed in foreign policy.

@RealityBites: "$16 Trillion dollars in debt and this lamestream media wants to focus on Ryan's foriegn policy. Go figure.......:

Figure: Ryan's policies are the same as GW Bush's, which took us into two unfunded wars and unfunded Medicare Part D which resulted in the debt.

Wow, my dog could have figured that one out ...

You do remember I am the foreigner, U.S. Citizen and foreign policy would be up my alley of interest. What makes an American a foreign policy expert????? You tell me.

@Howard: "I'm sure that Romney and Ryan won't turn a deaf ear, or turn their backs on the Iranian protesters, who risk their lives standing up to the corrupt, brutal regime !!!"

When was the last time you, Mittens or Munster were at a national security briefing? If you think President Obama isn't dealing with this very delicate situation with full input from people who actually know what they're doing (i.e., not folks like you, Mittens or Munster), then you're hopeless!

Mr. Ryan, like Mr. Romney has no foreign policy credentials, except to endorse the same neo-Conservative ideologies that made the G. W. Bush Presidency such a foreign affairs disaster. Mr. Romney has already promised war in Iran, and his little trip to show his credentials was a gaffe-riot. One where the Israelis actually said they couldn't imagine any better support than they have with Obama. Maybe it's Mr. Romney's desire to move their capital....
Romney/Ryan is G.W. Bush's third term. I know the GOP has somehow managed to forget that period (they must get good drugs), but for the rest of us, I cannot image wanting to go back there again.

@ call girl ... You are suggesting that Biden deals with Israel well ??? Israel HATES the Obama administration, but you'd never know it by reading the extremely biased main stream U.S. media. Try reading articles from the Israeli media. Also, Obama didn't even stand up verbally for the Iranian protesters, who risked their lives protesting against tyranny ... and, then there's Obama's emabarassing egotistical gifts to the Queen of England ... and, returning the bust of Churchill ... ignoring our open borders with Mexico ... and, our ridiculous trade policies with China ... Call Girl, you should spend less time on your back, and more time studying the facts ... Stop believing and spreading the Obama propaganda.

myviews, your rants are really desperate. Just because you are a foreigner to America, you are not a government policy holder or have government knowledge to trade agreements or sanctions. The President is well versed on foreign affairs because he holds that office. I am sure he knows a whole lot about what is going on in foreign countries, more than you profess to know.

Senator Obama voted in favor of the war of Iraq, he could have voted NO and try to stop it.

The 2008 election is over. Obama won. He has had four years of being POTUS. He killed Bin Laden, and has kept us out of Libya and Egypt. What has Romney done? His only foreign policy experience is tax policy. His world tour a few weeks ago was a complete embarassment for himself and our country.

"Israel HATES the Obama administration, but you'd never know it by reading the extremely biased main stream U.S. media."

Yeah, you'd never know it from the glowing reviews and comments about the Obama administration doing more for Israeeli security in than his predecessors for decades, which came from their current Minister or Defense, Ehud Barak (also former Prime Minister), and one of the other former gov't big shots [blanking on the name]. Facts matter. Your belief that you get to ignore them does not.

You need to do your homework before you start posting here. Sen. Obama never cast a ballot on the Iraq War. Do your homework to find out why.

MyViews, my point is that President Obama picked Biden, just like Dubya was lacking so he picked Dick Cheney.
President Obama also has a team of dedicated people who run information on Foreign Policy and they keep him briefed regularly

So many rightwing posters have their facts wrong. When they are corrected, they resist and refuse to re-check the facts. Burying your head in the sand is a great way to get your behind kicked. And hard.
We all need the same starting point: an agreed-upon set of facts, verifiable and well sourced.
I have the impression that a hefty percentage of people who despise Obama and want to vote for Romney have very little idea of what Obama's policies and accomplishments actually are – and equally scant idea of what Romney has stood for in the past and where he would take the country.

Okay, I get your point so Romney will do the same as Obama keeping people around that keep them briefed regularly. I though you guys originally in 2008 picked Obama because you thought he had foreign policy experience just because he lived in Indonesia 4 years as a kid.
