Christie to deliver keynote at GOP convention

Washington (CNN) - The tough talking governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention, a senior GOP official told CNN.

The keynote is one of the highest profile speaking slots during convention week.

Christie seriously considered running for president himself, a deliberation fueled, in part, by the urging of deep-pocketed Republican donors. He ultimately decided against it and endorsed Mitt Romney in Oct. 2011. Christie's endorsement was a big "political get" for the former Massachusetts governor during a contentious time in the Republican primary.

The New Jersey governor is a favorite among many conservatives for his street fighting style and willingness to challenge his political enemies. At times, Christie's outspokenness has caused controversy, but he is not known for backing down. On the campaign trail, Christie has been a vocal defender and advocate for Romney.

The long rumored decision to have Christie deliver the keynote address was first reported by USA Today early Tuesday. Christie gave the newspaper an interview outlining his speech. The GOP official confirmed to CNN that Christie would deliver the keynote address. An official announcement was expected to be made later in the morning.

Christie was elected in 2009 when he defeated incumbent Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine. Previously, Christie served as the U.S. attorney for the district of New Jersey during President George W. Bush's administration.

Several other well known Republicans will also speak at the convention including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

The convention will take place over four days later this month in Tampa, Florida, where Romney will officially receive the GOP presidential nomination and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan the vice presidential nomination.

That's funny. Christie and "big role" (roll) in the same sentence.

Christie hasn't missed a meal, so what does he have to slam President Obama about not unless he's going to blame President Obama for his weight problem. Shove a few Twinkies in Christie's mouth.

Christie will be there if there's twinkies for him to enjoy, he almost stroked months ago when the Hostess company went bankrupt. He needs a conveyor belt running from the kitchen to his table ,its that bad.He does carry a lot of weight in the republican party, just look at that girth, almost as round as a gray whale but dumber...He's arrogent and callus too, something a person of his size should be scared of because if he gets sick, which he looks like in the future he'll need the ACA bill to care for him,the same bill he's staunchly against!!But then again he has government insurance, something everyone wishes they had, don't we!!Keep it short Christie,ya don't get that much to eat !!!

Making fat jokes about Christie is easy. What's hard is taking him seriously. Politically, he's such a light weight.

What I really like about Christie, he says what he means. He tackles the big problems. He just doesn't tell you what you want to hear. I don't care that he is sometimes abrasive. That is one thing I admire about him. If we only had a Christie Palin ticket, that would be awesome and I like that they don't use technical terms, they say what they mean and mean what they say. I think both would admit to being wrong, which you rarely see with a politician.

He exemplifies the repugnican party. They have their face, and I cannot forget their body right out in front of people. They are not hiding the kind of people they are. I remember my Catholic upbringing, and one thing that addresses the repgnant parety are the severn deadly sins. As you can see, Christie is very much into gluttony, sloth, and wrath. Which fits into the repgnant party ideology, pride (they can do everything better–case in point their, black man is better then the democrats black man) if that's not pride I don't know what is. Just listen to them, they are the party of greed. As Jesus said, Love of money is the root of all evil.. Come on people, do any of you middle class people believe Romney/Ryan are going to help the middle class. If so, I have a bridge I want to sell you.

BIG role and Christie go hand in hand. Make sure that stage is reinforced.
The teapublikkkans really like the big mouth in your face stooges, dont they?
This is the guy who used a state helicopter to attend a kid's soccer game then couldn't walk 100 yards and had to be driven the length of a footballs field? Will he be able to walk to the podium without having a heart attack?
You better keep regular citizens away from him or he will confront them like the bully did at thr Jersey Shore. WAIT, that's why he was chosen he is a bully just like the bishop. Birds of a feather sure flock together.

I have a major problem with all the fat jokes. First off, it deflects from the political discussion that SHOULD be going on right now. Not only does it detract, it takes us all a step backwards. In my opinion, you're on the same level as the birthers – you'd rather dismiss the man for something other than his political views.

Make no mistake – I am on the exact opposite of the political spectrum as Christie. I can't stand what he believes ... his politics or his boorish behavior, and all of those are fair game for discussion / derision. I don't even have a problem with discussion of his weight for health reasons had he been a VP nominee. But the fat jokes are out of line.

    My opinon.

  19. Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer

This is the looser who has slashed domestic programs for the states's most vulnerable of citizens, cut funding for schools and after care programs. He has forced state and local employees to accept furlough days without pay, force some employees to retire against their free will, and has forced workers in state and local government to pay a percentage of their salaries into their pension and has deprived workers of the potential to get promotions and pay raises they have earned, saying everyone has to make sacrifices. Then he turned around and gave huge tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. Then he had the nerve to ride the state helicopter to see his son's baseball games, costing the state $4,000. Let's face it, this incompetent looser belongs in their with Bernie Madeoff with people's hard earned money. Right wing losers!
