Washington (CNN) - The tough talking governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention, a senior GOP official told CNN.
The keynote is one of the highest profile speaking slots during convention week.

Christie seriously considered running for president himself, a deliberation fueled, in part, by the urging of deep-pocketed Republican donors. He ultimately decided against it and endorsed Mitt Romney in Oct. 2011. Christie's endorsement was a big "political get" for the former Massachusetts governor during a contentious time in the Republican primary.
The New Jersey governor is a favorite among many conservatives for his street fighting style and willingness to challenge his political enemies. At times, Christie's outspokenness has caused controversy, but he is not known for backing down. On the campaign trail, Christie has been a vocal defender and advocate for Romney.
The long rumored decision to have Christie deliver the keynote address was first reported by USA Today early Tuesday. Christie gave the newspaper an interview outlining his speech. The GOP official confirmed to CNN that Christie would deliver the keynote address. An official announcement was expected to be made later in the morning.
Christie was elected in 2009 when he defeated incumbent Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine. Previously, Christie served as the U.S. attorney for the district of New Jersey during President George W. Bush's administration.
Several other well known Republicans will also speak at the convention including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.
The convention will take place over four days later this month in Tampa, Florida, where Romney will officially receive the GOP presidential nomination and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan the vice presidential nomination.

Oink, Oink, Oink, Oink, Romney " Gov Christie please speak in English please"
Those that vote for republicans are voting against their best interest and their families........
Republicans voted against both social security and medicare! Does that show that they are really concerned about the middle class?
Hoping for a heart attack......
The fat jokes aren't funny. I can't stand Christie, but I also recognize that he has a serious problem that will dramatically shorten his life. His inability, or refusal to take care of himself makes me question just how long he will honestly live. And with the extra weight he is carrying, he will also have severe health problems as he gets older. He has to know all of this. It makes me question his judgement in regards to decisions he makes for other people. If you can't or won't take care of yourself, how can we expect him to make good decisions regarding the state.
He goes well with his party line. He's bloated and abrasive. He has neither class nor culture and what I consider a bully through and through.
no class, no culture.
What about Christie isn't big. Dude's a Big Mac away from the Lt. Governor getting promoted. He's the epitome of the fat cat politician.
Maybe Christie can stick his big fist into Obama's lying mouth and shut Obama up. Obama promised he would do wonders if he was elected president. Yet we are practically in a depression. People have lost jobs, homes, and their families have broken up due to financial stresses, etc. I would rather have a man tell it like it is, than to have a man lie to the public and cause such hardships. We need strong people in our government instead of lying weak presidents. If people are stupid enough to vote for Obama again, then within four years we will be in a deep depression.
Ahh yes, the Ralph Kramden of Politics, the quitessential hothead bloviator.
Ryan for VEEP, Christie delivers keynote, whats next: Lepage for press secretary?
There is no way this lard piece of crass will be President in 2016, which this keynote speech sets him up for.
They better reinforce the stage with steel girders before they roll out Governor Fat Fattie.
Chris Christie, needs to get rolling on 2016, Rick Perry has already gone back to Iowa to set up his campaign, Palin, is running amok, even P Ryan maybe setting up a campaign committee. Republicans, 2016 is only four short years away. Don't think Romney will try again, but, who knows?
I'm not a fan of Gov. Christie. So, I probably won't listen to or watch his speech. I think he's a bully so that's why I'm not interested in what he has to say. However, I think the fat jokes and saying things like "hoping for a heart attack" cross the line of humane behavior. No all overweight people are stupid and careless, just as not all thin people are smart and careful. (As evidenced by the comments on this blog.) Fact is, some skinny people simply have their family's genes to thank for how they look. Damn people, grow up.
not that's what i call "big government" is his plan to eat until he is "too big to fail"?
OMIGOD I just looked at the picture again ,how many chins does he have? Look at those hams he calls hands engulfing Robmees by comparison almost dainty hands Twit must have run to the mens room to wash the slimy sweat off.
He is looking at that mic like it's a chocolate candy bar.
Christie is a guy who has many big rolls. They're mostly around his gut and backside.
christie is such a loud mouth that I could not see him ever being president. Could you see him handeling foreign . He would be as bad as mitt at it. The convention should be a blast to watch sorry palin has her shorts in a bunch and won't be attending. Nothing better that a bunch of low life rich ol repos sucking up to mitt and screwing him behind his back, Love to hear these closst gays and old drunks tell us all about family values. Forward 2012
Ahhhh, the GOP just keeps getting more and more extreme. Not surprising, just sad. The GOP is a prty of the illbred buffoons.
Kind of an oxymoron heading wouldn't you say? BIG ROLL er uh ROLE? for a really BIG MAN
Romney to Christie.....please do not ever ever mentioning anything about releasing tax returns....just like the last time...
Not sure......the VP (Very Porky) slot will be mine anyway...
