Devo off the leash: 'Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro'

(CNN) – Seamus, the now infamous Romney family dog from the 1980s, was again in the spotlight on Tuesday, off-handedly referenced by President Obama on the campaign trail and the subject of a soon-to-be released punk rock song.

Devo, the punk rock band famous for it's hit "Whip It ," will release a song later this month titled, "Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro (Remember Seamus)."

Rolling Stone first reported the track's release.

Mitt Romney told the story of strapping Seamus' kennel–with Seamus inside–to the roof of a station wagon for a family road trip from Massachusetts to Ontario in the 1980s. The car packed with Romney and his wife, Ann, and their five boys had no room for the dog who Romney said actually enjoyed the ride on the roof. Critics and animal rights activists soon ran with the story.

Tuesday, President Obama invoked his opponent's pooch's wind-swept ride while campaigning in the battleground state of Iowa and referencing a speech Romney gave a few months ago.

Obama said, "That's what he said about wind power: 'You can't drive a car with a windmill on it.' I don't know if he's actually tried that. I know he's had other things on his car."

The large crowd laughed, apparently picking up on the jab.

Devo founder and commercial director, Gerald V. Casale, is a major proponent of the late Seamus, even starting a 'Remember Seamus campaign' aimed to "go off leash by choosing a non-human as the most important political figure of this election. Make 2012 the year where animals like Seamus are valued and honestly praised," according to the campaign's website.

Recently, a series of parody songs hitting both sides of the political aisle have gone viral on the internet as the campaign season gets into full swing. The latest, "Romney Girl" harps on a certain presumptive GOP nominee for his wealth while a recast of the chart-topping hit "Somebody That I Used To Know," points to what it calls a disappointing first term for Obama as president.

LMAO at the crybabies who are whining and blaming President Obama because DEVO wrote a song! Every time mittens or one of his surrogates opens their mouths they reinforce just how not ready for the big time the wrecking crew really is. Keep up the good work wingnuts!

You liberals out there should take notice that the Obama campaign has been nothing but jokes and jabs. No substance whatsoever. Great candidate you support there. He has damaged this countries finances for decades because of his complete incompetence. To hide that fact he has decided not to run on the issues.

Thuggish? Really? Because an unrelated band makes a song poking fun at your nominee? You folks on the right really have lost all sense of humor and normality, haven't you?

I think this author made this incident sound much more trivial than it was.. It was a 12 hour trip during which the dog became so frightened and upset that he defecated to the point that it ran down the car's windows. After the children complained, this nice gentleman stopped the car at a service station, hosed down the dog and the cage, put the poor frightened and sick dog back in the cage and on top of the car for the rest of the 12 hour trip... I think this should be talked about constantly.. this and his bully-tactics to his college mate whose hair did not suit him, and brave Mitt decided he need to gather a posse (I guess too cowardly to act alone), hold down the scared young man and cut his hair.. Folks, these two things tell you that this man has a serious problem.. No soul. no compassion... he has none for you either.. you may be sure.

It looks like Obama will be as wicked as he can on his way out. That's too bad.

The Obama campaign, the DNC, pro-Obama superPACs, they all have nothing to do with the song. It's called freedom of speech, pal. You should support it, not criticize it. Should I blame Mitt Romney for the stuff you say?

First of all, I stick with the real issues. But I recommend that read the article again. Obama went there.

At least Romney didn't eat a dog.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I once ate a sheep's eyeball. Not by choice, but because I was stationed in the mid-East where it's considered a delicacy, I know that it's offensive to your hosts to decline food that is offered. My parents raised me to respect others and their cultures, so even though I was an adult with the ability to exercise the free will to insult my hosts by NOT eating that disgusting thing, I did it out of respect. Six year olds aren't afforded such luxury as free will.

If Obama's back to the dog on the roof story, he's about out of gas and getting desperate. Oh, and Mr. President, "Puppy Chow" means food for the DOG to eat.

What happened to GOPer sense of humor? GOPers have spent the past three years absolutely giddy over their own rather lame comments snarling at President Obama ... his mother ... his father ... his wife ... his children ... his sister ... his grandmother ... his grandfather ... and anyone else they felt might be close to the man ... and here they come dragging themselves out of FOX Nation to grumble about a joke made about Romney's dog.

what I'd like to know is how Romney knows the dog enjoyed being on the roof rack. Did the dog "tell" him? If so, that's even more cause for worry if Romney thinks a dog actually talked to him.......... Who else is "talking" to him?

  13. 83 Days until Obama gets RE-ELECTED !

@ObjectiveGuy – The stink of desperation has engulfed the entire Obama campaign, to the point that the only "issues" they are willing to discuss are the lies and distortions that they make up about Romney and now Ryan
    --------------------------------
The "stink and desperation" is coming from the camp that started it.. AGAINST HIS OWN PARTY! That's the approach Willard used to get an assumed win of the Grand OBstructionist Partys' nomination and it now continues to his onslaught of the POTUS. Why would any intelligent person sit down at a table to discuss things while the opposition is picking up mud and slinging it at you?? Obama will tear Mitt the Twit a new at the debates.. usuming Willard has the courage to show up.. Meantime, look in the mirror bub!

Youre gonna blame Obama for eating dog meat when he was young...in a country with different cultures. but it was okay for two grown adults, who knew right from wrong, living in a country that doesnt tolerate abusing animals, remember Michael Vick got in trouble for dog fighting. but you want to compare the two? ahh in the words of the Romney campaign, "you have reached a new low."

@hate from the left but mostly lies – Romney/Ryan 2012- The fiscally responsible way forward!
    --------------------------------
Hahahhahha... ever read the Ryan Budget Plan?? You won't be so happy if these nutjobs win, increase your taxes and give them to the 1% and take away your SS and Medicare benefits !! That's in his plan.
The totally gullible digestion of the right wing propaganda spewed by Faux Noise is specifically designed for the lemmings who are too darn dunmb to know better.. Do a little research – like most intelligent Americans – and you'll find out reall quick that you are the sheep being led back to the slaughter..

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ??????????? Let's look at the REAL aftermath and carnage left by the last Repuglican president! Evaporation of MASSIVE Budget surplus, -8.9% GDP, $11 TRILLION national debt, $1.47 TRILLION deficit, $2.8 TRILLION in tax cuts (unpaid for), TWO Wars (unpaid for), Medicare prescription plan (unpaid for), $3 TRILLION borrowed from China, BILLION dollar no-bid contracts award to the military-industrial complex, a Wall Street, Banking, Auto, Mortgage crisis, losing over 700,000 jobs monthly and a economy heading into Depression when President Obama took office! These are all verifiable FACTS, but your Repugs refuse to accept the TRUTH !

Study the definition of insanity, look in the mirror and ask why would any intelligent person want to go back to that !!

Actually, that's a little different. Considering the fact that Four and most of the others are regurgitating Mittens' campaign's substanceless talking points almost verbatim (and certainly ad nauseum), then I think it is somewhat fair to blame Mittens...at least when they are in fact doing that. As for Devo, there's zero evidence that any connection exists, and there's plenty of people and entertainers out there who latched onto Mittens' ridiculous behavior of putting his dog in a cage on the roof of his car while it was moving that you can't really assume the connection either.
