Obama to blast Romney on wind energy in Iowa

(CNN) - The presidential campaign of President Barack Obama, who is campaigning in Iowa Tuesday, released the following excerpts of his speech in Oskaloosa:

"And at a moment when homegrown energy is creating new jobs in states like Iowa, my opponent wants to end tax credits for wind energy producers. He's said new sources of energy like these are 'imaginary.' His running mate calls them a 'fad.' During a speech a few months ago, Governor Romney even explained his energy policy this way: 'You can't drive a car with a windmill on it.' That's what he said about wind power. 'You can't drive a car with a windmill on it.'

"I wonder if he actually tried that. That's something I would have liked to see. But if he really wants to learn something about wind energy, Iowa, all he has to do is pay attention to what you've been doing.

"If he knew what you've been doing, he'd see that in places like Newton, where a few years ago, a Maytag plant shut down and jobs dried up; folks are now back to work manufacturing enormous new towers and blades for some of the most high-tech wind turbines on the planet. The wind industry now supports about 7,000 jobs in this state, and 75,000 jobs across the country. These jobs aren't a fad – they're good jobs and sources of pride we need to fight for.

"If he knew what you've been doing, he'd know we used to have to import most of the parts like these. Today they're made in Iowa, and made in America, by American workers. That's not imaginary – that's real. And that's what we're fighting for in this election.

"If he knew what you've been doing, he'd know that about 20% of Iowa's electricity now comes from wind, powering our homes and factories and businesses in a way that's clean and renewable. In fact, over the past 4 years, we've doubled the amount of electricity America generates from wind. Across America, we've built the equivalent of 12 new Hoover Dams' worth of wind energy. Governor Romney may have figured out that you can't drive a car with a windmill on it, but he doesn't seem to know that America now has enough wind turbines installed to generate enough electricity from wind to power nearly 13 million homes with clean energy. That's how you leave something better for the next generation. That's what's at stake right now.

"Unlike my opponent, I want to stop giving $4 billion in taxpayer subsidies each year to big oil companies that have rarely been more profitable, and keep investing in homegrown energy sources like wind that have never been more promising. That's the choice in this election. That's why I'm running for President of the United States."

What is so remarkable about the GOTP stance against green energy is that they ran on alternative energy in 2008. It was a constant element of Sarah Palin's stump speeches, it came right after "drill, baby, drill." I guess they figured they lost with that message and abandoned it. The entire right wing has flip-flopped on alternative energy. They're against any and all forms of it.

Romney will counter by talking about "clean" coal........I'm still waiting to see a picture of what "clean" coal looks like. Coal has certainly played a role in our energy production over the years, and still has a place in our overall approach......but "clean" it is not. We pay an environmental price when we rely on coal, and that is just a fact.

We need to develop everything. I don't understand why Romney doesn't like wind power. He's full of it.

Mitt Phony's motto "vote me President now, and give you details later" I think the last three years of tax returns is reasonable if you want to be the POTUS. Not to much to ask, right, Mitt?

Why is it that every blog in the media is a question about Romney or Ryan? The media never seems to ask any questions about Obama. Here are a few that might be asked "why didn't Obama do anything about jobs or the economy when he had both the house and the senate for 2 years? How experienced was Obama in foreign affairs when he became President? Why did he surround himself with those who donated to him in 2008 instead of experienced people and had a treasury secretary who hadn't paid his taxes? If the past is so important about Romney, why isn't Obama's past discuessed? Why do we never discuss Biden, the buffon? Why hasn't Harry Reid released his taxes? Why haven't we asked Debby Shultz, Nancy P about their overseas holdings? Why haven't we questioned Obama about his 500 Billion dollar cut to Medicare in his Obamacare? Why haven't we questioned Obama about his relaxation of the Welfare to work act, allowing Dem. governors to allow "sleeping" as part of the "work" part? Why hasn't OBama had a budget since he became President?

If the Republicans want to end tax breaks and subsidies sor green energy then they must also come out against ending oil subsidies. Otherwise they are hypocrites.

No one on the Republican side has said they didn't like alternative energy, including Romney and wind power. He just doesn't like the government to pay for it. We can't afford it right now. Obama wants to put people on welfare. He has ads out there encouraging people to get food stamps and to sign up for the Earned income Credit. Maybe he just has to make a few choices: welfare or wind power.

Way to go Obama. Give it to the Republicans. Go talk to the people.

The government should be for the people and not for millionaires, billionaires and special interests.

Robme and Ryan lies are not going to fly with the American people.

What subsidies do the oil companies get? I would like you to point them out to me. If you are talking about tax breaks that all corporations get, that is not a subsidy.

Because the lie of him having both houses for 2 years is just that – a lie. Senator Franken's seat was contested by sore loser norm coleman, and by the time he was seated, Senator Kennedy had left due to his failing health, thereby leaving fewer than the required 60-seat filibusterproof majority. Please tell me you knew that, and you're just choosing to be obtuse to play to the low-information right wing.

    cmaryfinn,

I hit send too soon. As for the rest of your post, it's nothing but rightwing lies that have been disproven ad nauseum. Sorry babe, no matter how many times you repeat those lies, they'll never be true. Thinking Americans are turned off by those like yourself and mittens and his wrecking crew who think Americans are too stupid to see past your lies.

maryfinn, those questions you pose have already been answered:

Obama didn't have congress for two years. Kennedy pasted and Scott Brown got his seat part way thru that term. Not to mention that included that independent tended to vote democrat. So the record number of filibusters began before 2010.

Show us a politician who doesn't surround himself with donors. Or as Romney did, provide grants to folks who donated or using his office to enrich his friends. This is nothing new. Only conservatives are shocked that this goes on. If only you knew about the contracting business.

What don't you know about Obama's past? Where he was born? Went to college? Jobs he's had? Tax returns? Parents?

Reid, Pelosi, and the other democrats you mentioned aren't running for president. However, why was Boehner fighting so hard for the Keystone pipeline that his "blind" trust had investments in? I could mention others, but again, old story conservatives are shocked that happens everywhere.

Welfare? Debunked by everyone except die hard conservatives and Rush.

So maybe you should ask better questions. Or at least read up before you go making silly claims.

I have a great idea ... since Obama thinks wind engery is so great, why doesn't he give his acceptance speach completly run by the energy from wind power that is generated at the convention center. All the new agencies would need to run their network feeds from the same power source.

I would really be impressed if Obama did that. Well I can not say that I would find it totally funny, that his acceptance speach probably wouldn't be heard by everyone attending the convention.

What is even more remarkable about the lie is that they choose to forget that Sen. Scott Brown was seated in January 2010 to replace the late Sen. Kennedy, one year after Pres. Obama was sworn in. They also choose to forget about Sen. Joe Lieberman, who was against Obama in the 2008 election and has been against him ever since.

I think Obama should keep his word ... if he did that the Republican would have nothing to run on. It is not too late Obama cut the deficit in half by the end of this term ... just like you promised you would.

President Obama needs to blast Mitt and his repuglican aristocrats who are so aloof and out of touch with main stream America, and think we want 4 more years under a repuglican president after this; evaporation of 1/2 trillion surplus, -8.9 GDP, 11 trillion national debt, 1.3 trillion deficit, 2.8 trillion in tax cuts (unpaid for)2 Wars (unpaid for), Medicare prescription plan (unpaid for), 3 trillion borrowed from China, a Wall Street, Banking, Auto, Mortgage crisis’s, losing over 800,000 jobs monthly and a economy on the brink of depression when President Obama took office!

Budweiser beer at a production plant installed one giant windmill, it pays for all the electricity used in production. What's wrong with that? New energy sources are coming up and also gives business and some individual family homes a way to have their own energy needs covered. Sounds great when you get a power bill for $250 every month.
