Romney-Ryan ticket makes U.S. religious history

(CNN) – In selecting Paul Ryan for his running mate, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has made modern political history: a major party ticket with no Protestant Christian.

Some historians call it the first ever. Others say it's technically the first since Abraham Lincoln. And there is an argument to be made regarding Dwight Eisenhower.

It would be really nice to simply get beyond religion in U.S. Presidential candidates and elections. It does seem odd however for a party that attempted to put forward the line that Mr. Obama in fact was not Christian to run two non-Protestant candidates. Given the Fundamentalist underpinnings of the party since Mr. Reagan's outreach in the '80s, this will be a n intersting if not a significant shift in Republican mores and tradition.

    "Ryan is Catholic."

Remains to be seen. His budget was roundly rejected by the Catholic church, which said it fails to comport with doctrine and constituted naked social darwinism. He responded by making a speech that very clumsily and ineffectually tried to reconcile the two. He's got more 'splainin' to do.

I never realized that was a requirement.... Maybe this is why we are so screwed up? Time to try something completely different! Like competence, intelligence and a record of proven success. Romney/Ryan 2012 – the only SANE Choice

I don't care I'd the president is an atheist but somebody whomis running for the office who wears magic underwear and thinks that he gets his mown planet after death? Not so much.
We then have the vp nominee whose religion still hasn't caught up with the 21st century. The again his church wasn't too please sit his budget plan either along with many rethugs and even his flip flopping running mate.

Quite on point you are Lynda.
Additionally I personally feel that if they were going to try to lay claim to fame in the religious arena they should've touted and shouted about Romney being the first Mormon to hold the Republican presidential nomination.
I guess they are not THAT stupid huh?! lol!

I agree. It is one major reason why American politics are so screwed up, as you put it. BTW, it is mostly on the right where religion is such a big issue. The majority of those on the left and center don't really care about it. They feel that there are bigger concerns, like what a person has actually said and done in their life.

  11. Ayn Rand(author of 'Selfishness is a Virtue') was an atheist, so doesn't make her disciple, Paul Ryan, "ANTI-CHRIST"?

Team Rolls/Royce's only god is the "gold shekels" all the GOP money changers hold so dear.

I think you'd have a hard time finding any politician that doesn't pray to that new god and religion.

Well, it is funny to watch GOPers try to sideline their idolatry during political campaigns. The Romney/Ryan ticket quite equals the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour "fantasy" induced visions.

A Mormon and Catholic walk into a bar.... Except the Mormon doesn't drink alcohol. So no joke to that.
I guess they missed the Nuns driving a bus all over the country Blasting the Ryan Budget plan.
And Catholic Bishops are none to happy with the Ryan Budget plan either.
Who are you going to alienate next, Sheriff of Nothingham and Eddie Munster?

Republicans slogan of "taking this country back", a picture is worth a thousand words because Romney/Ryan aren't the future of America, they're the future of the wealthiest. There's nothing wrong with being rich but it's wrong for the rich to attack the most volunerable citizens in America for their own personal greed.

The same people who don't want to talk about religion now are the same people who don't believe that president Obama is a christian, or can be a christian.

There is an undeniable truth to that. But, the problem is that the right wing is so overtly uniform and capricious about how their policies that one can easily overlook the few guilty parties on the left.
