Top Democrat on House Budget Committee to play Ryan in Biden debate prep

(CNN) - In his preparation to face Republican vice presidential candidate and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, Vice President Joe Biden will rehearse by debating the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a source with knowledge of the debate preparations told CNN.

The decision signals the central role budget and entitlement issues may play in the debate and fall election, and follows the central role those issues have played since Paul was announced as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's No. 2 nearly a week ago.

(CNN)– Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney "has a penchant for secrecy" and is holding himself to a different standard by not releasing more years of tax returns.

Following criticism and allegations from Democrats suggesting that the presumptive GOP nominee had not been paying taxes, Romney said Thursday that he has paid no less than 13% in personal income taxes over the past ten years.

Some political ads to pause on 9/11

(CNN) - The campaigns of President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, as well as at least one of the major super PACs supporting their candidacy, will not run television commercials on September 11 this year, the campaigns and organization confirmed Thursday evening.

Priorities USA Action, the primary pro-Obama super PAC, also said Thursday they will not run spots on the day. A spokeswoman for the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future did not immediately respond regarding Restore's advertising plans.

Ryan says his letters in support of stimulus 'should have been handled differently'

(CNN) - Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan responded Thursday to his previous statements that he had not requested stimulus funding after reports emerged that he had sent letters to federal agencies in support of stimulus grant requests made by a Wisconsin non-profit.

Ryan, who represents Wisconsin in Congress, denied that he had requested stimulus monies in an interview this week with an Ohio television station as well as in a 2010 radio interview, statements which were contradictory to the letters he wrote as well as his opposition to the stimulus program.

Obama campaign: Ryan may be a 'drag' on Romney

Washington (CNN) – In a polling memo released by campaign pollster Joel Benenson on Thursday along with a related conference call, Team Obama tried to paint Rep. Paul Ryan as one of the worst vice presidential selections in recent history.

"This reflects something about Mitt Romney's decision making priorities and what he did was he tapped as a running mate the person who's been dubbed the leader of the most extreme wing of the Congressional Republicans," Benenson said on the call.

BREAKING: CNN Electoral Map: Wisconsin moves to true "toss-up"... CNN Thursday turned the important battleground state of Wisconsin from "lean Obama" to true "toss-up" on its electoral map, in the wake of Mitt Romney's naming of House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, a seven-term congressman from the Badgerstate, as his running mate. One contributing factor behind CNN's move was a new poll that matched two others from last week that indicate the presidential contest in Wisconsin is close. While Ryan's announcement did not dramatically alter the presidential poll numbers in Wisconsin, it did change the way both campaigns viewed the state of the race in the state.

ROMNEY TALKS TAXES: 13 FOR 10... Mitt Romney has paid no less than 13% in personal income taxes over the past 10 years, he said Thursday. The presumptive GOP nominee has faced withering criticism from Democrats over the release of his tax returns, including a charge by Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid that Romney had paid no taxes for a 10-year period. Reid did not specify if those were the last 10 years or an earlier period.

"I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years I never paid less than 13%. I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. I paid taxes every single year," Romney said, explaining he had gone back to check his records after being asked by a reporter about the tax rates he had paid.

Artists tell campaigns, delete me from your playlist

Washington (CNN) - Mitt Romney's campaign can now point to something it has in common with Ronald Reagan's - a musical act is asking it to stop using its music at campaign stops.

The rock band Silversun Pickups this week served Romney's campaign with a cease-and-desist order after it says Romney's campaign used its song, "Panic Switch," at an event earlier this month.

Ryan Rages Against the Machine

Washington (CNN) - Although Rage thinks Paul Ryan is just another cog in the "Machine," that doesn't stop the Republican vice presidential hopeful from rocking out to the rap metal group's anti-establishment lyrics.

"Rage Against the Machine is not going to be down with that," said Lorraine Ali, pop music editor at the Los Angeles Times.
