(CNN) – A coalition of Pennsylvania civil rights groups filed an appeal Thursday to overturn a judge's ruling that upheld a controversial voter identification law.
The appeal seeks to prevent the law, which requires voters to present a state issued photo ID, from being enforced in November's election, said American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania associate director Sara Mullen.

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's newly minted running mate Rep. Paul Ryan waded into Middle East policy for the first time on Friday in Virginia, affirming the Republican ticket's support for Israel following reports that Iran's president called the United States' ally a "cancerous tumor."
"Let me be really clear. Under President Romney, our adversaries will think twice about challenging America and our allies because we believe in peace through strength," said Ryan. "There will be no daylight between America and our friends around the world."

(CNN) – Tax documents released Friday by Republican vice presidential candidate show Paul Ryan had an income tax bill in 2011 of approximately 20% of his income, and 16% in 2010.
Those numbers indicate he paid a larger percentage of his income in taxes in the past two years than did his running mate Mitt Romney, whose effective tax rate over the same two years was approximately 14.5%, according to returns the Republican presidential candidate and his wife released earlier this year.

Washington (CNN) – A top Mitt Romney strategist insisted Friday the debate over whether the GOP contender should release more of his tax information has "stopped hurting." But a new report from a recent Wisconsin focus group comes to a different conclusion – suggesting his refusal to shed more light on his finances raises trust issues with pivotal voters.
"It's not new information," was the case made by the senior Romney strategist, who discussed the issue only on condition of anonymity. His take: that voters who are going to be moved by the tax debate have already moved to the Obama column.

DEVELOPING: CHICAGO CONTINUES TO PRESS BOSTON ON TAXES… President Barack Obama's campaign sought to turn up the pressure Friday on Mitt Romney to release his tax returns, offering to back off on their calls for the release of additional years of returns if he agrees to disclose five years of tax information.
The debate continued at Friday’s White House briefing, where Josh Earnest, the principal deputy press secretary, took a barrage of questions on Romney’s tax returns. During the questioning, Earnest tried to direct the pressure on Romney, not the White House.
“I'm certainly not making any accusations, all I'm pointing out is all the questions you are asking could be answered before the end of the day today, but that will require Gov. Romney to live up to a standard that's been met by every other major party presidential candidate since his father ran for president in 1968,” Earnest said.
(CNN) – Artur Davis, the former four-term Democratic congressman from Alabama who co-chaired President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, introduced the running mate of Obama's Republican challenger in Virginia Friday.
"Are you ready to meet the next vice president of the United States?" Davis asked at a rally in Springfield, Virginia. It was Ryan's second event of the day. He held a rally outside Richmond on Friday morning.
