The 50 richest members of Congress

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) – The Hill, a political news site, unveiled its annual list of the 50 richest lawmakers on Tuesday. Rep. Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas, held on to the top slot with a cool $290.5 million.

"McCaul remains in the stratosphere of the very richest members of Congress," said The Hill, noting that his wealth "stems from several family trusts," and that his father Lowry Mays founded Clear Channel Communications. His value actually rose by $3 million in 2011, the time period covered in the list.

One more attempt to keep Democrats from realizing that they also are rich people, notice the little note at the end of the article to appeace Democrat people.... "Even though Democrats make up three of the top five on The Hill's list, Republicans outnumber Democrats, 31 to 19." Always trying to say that Democrats are poor.

So why didn't Kerry get attacked for being so wealthy when he ran for president? Is it possible that is because the Liberal media didn't want to point that out because they wanted him elected. They didn't say anything about Gore's wealth either. Interesting!!

There's nothing wrong with being rich.....that's everyone's goal anyway....is how you got rich and what you, as a politician working for the people by the people, do to enforce policies that will make YOU and only you richer, without any regard for the people you're supposed to work for....bottom line all politicians work for themselves and the billionaires who sponsor them.....

Maybe because he released his tax returns. Maybe because he wasn't CEO of a corporation that bought corporations and them of their assets, sold off what was left, and pocketed millions looted from employee retirement funds after he sent their jobs overseas. Maybe that's why. "Retroactively retired" my Aunt Fanny!

The only demographic that's "always trying to that Democrats are poor" is the right wing. They, including you, are constantly accusing "leftists" of not having jobs and living off of government checks.

No one ever said democrats are poor, they just look out for those who are : needy, without insurance, women, veterans, seniors, workers, college students, children, the middle class, and those who are oppressed.

Who the hell cares. George Washington may have been one of the richest politicians ever. What I want to know is how we can get the bottom 50 percent of the adult population to pay something into the system besides liquor and cigarette taxes.

If you added up all the assets of the 50 richest members of congress ... it would pale in comparison to the 6 TRILLION dollars, belonging to the people of the United States, which Obama has sqandered ... or, even the one Trillion dollars of tarp money which he squandered ... or, the 700+ Billion dollars, Obama has looted from the Medicare funds ... or, the Billions of dollars Obama has given to corruput green energy ... or, to other countries who hate us ... or, to unions, and other Obama cronies !!!

"Proposals..vs..Actuals"..Pres Obama's campaign would like to convince the American-People that the Paul Ryan's budgetary proposals in Congress are etched in stone ...that is why the pundits on the Dems-side would like to coin it
"The Ryan Plan" and make it part of the Romney-campaign...."Contrary" what we cleary see since Paul Ryan was chosed to join the GOP-Romney/Ryan ticket is that the two men have bonded into a force to bring about the best
"American-Plan" with principles and good Policies that will benefit the country as a whole...Also when Gov Romney made the best choice with Paul Romney Americans are takeing a better look at Gov Romney and will find him to be not only
"Capable but also Likable......and on another note Washinton and all Politicians need to stay out of the Nations bedrooms....

I do not judge people based on their wealth. I judge them based on how they attained on it and what they do with it..or despite it. When multi-millionaire Dems/liberals get up to vote, they vote for tax increases on themselves in the interests of the country. When multi-millionaire GOPers/Teatrolls run for POTUS, they propose tax plans that would reduce their tax liability to near-zero. Stop pretending this has anything to do with judging people solely on their wealth. That's nothing but a straw man designed to distract you from any deeper, more nuanced analysis.

Hey, genius, TARP was enacted before he took office. He had no choice as POTUS but to enforce that law.

Do right wingnuts realize that 225 republicans have voted for the Romney/Ryan budgetary proposals? One would think that they are serious about not only removing the $716 billion from medicare, but also the $500 billion in medicaid, and give that money to the wealthy in the form of tax cuts.

Because Kerry is a member of the very wealthy, rich Forbes family and has lived off his 4 Trust Funds he inherited from the Forbes family. I don't think anyone in the Democrat group will criticize a member of the Forbes family.

"So why didn't Kerry get attacked for being so wealthy when he ran for president?"

Because he wasn't running on a platform designed to redistribute to himself and people like him an ever-increasing share of the country's wealth at an ever-accelerating rate.

What is so very difficult for you people to understand about this not being simply attacks on people for being wealthy? It has nothing, really, to do with their wealth. The ony difference between some plutocrat scrub who is not a multi-millionaire and a plutocrat scrub who is a multi-millionaire is the additional hypocrisy of the latter being exorbitantly wealthy while proposing policies that would increase the redistribution of the country's wealth to themselves, but claiming that they're in it for the middle-class, poor and all of America. That is counterbalanced by the former, presumably middle-class person, exhibitting the grand mal stupidity of supporting such policies as well. we oppose the policies, not the wealth or lack thereof of the people espousing them. It just makes iot all the more disgusting when someone stands up an tries to sell you policies designed solelyto help themselves by trying to trick you into believing it will help you as well. Honestly, I think most of you just fake it and rely on the straw man because you're afraid to admit the implications of what you now support solely because you're desperately clinging to the idea that you haven't been wrong for years and years.

Are you really this obtuse or are you just playing to the low information voters? The Forbes family are hardcore rightwing lunatics – try reading Forbes magazine for a quick tutorial. Additionally, your ignorance and lack of education are glaring: It's Democratic group not "Democrat group", but thanks for playing.

EVERY politician that ever told the American people they shouldn't get free health care is a millionaire AND gets free healthcare that is paid for by the American people. Disgraceful. I think every politician that is oppossed to free healthcare should refuse the free healthcare that elected officials get and put their money where there mouth is buy paying for the private insurance they love so much. The first time they get sick, they'll have such a bad experience with their insurer they'll all be champions of the Public Option...

To liberals you are only a poor recipient of wealth if you are Republican. The duplicitous standards are idiotic. The left hate people of faith that are successful and give to causes like Church, ministries, faith based schools or endeavors. From the standpoint of raising money they give a larger percentage of income to charity than any group in the country.

You are right. John Kerry did release HIS taxes. The thing you are not saying is that he and his very rich wife filed separately therefore no one knows what they really did with their total wealth.
