Capitol Police, FBI investigating threat against Akin

Washington (CNN) –U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI are investigating a reported threat against Rep. Todd Akin, a police spokeswoman said Thursday.

There is "an active, open investigation, Lt. Kimberly Schneider said, without revealing further details, citing a policy against discussing the security of members of Congress.

Pressure from the mainstream Republican Party has mounted on the Missouri representative to drop his bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in November because of his comments about "legitimate rape" and opposing abortion in rape cases.

Akin was in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday ahead of the Republican National Convention, huddling with top conservative activists and assessing whether to proceed with his embattled candidacy.

Multiple sources at the Council for National Policy conference, which Akin attended, told CNN that the congressman is being encouraged by leading figures in the conservative movement to remain in the Senate race even as he faces pressure from the Republican establishment to withdraw.

Just wondering if the threat is "legitimate"?

What's up with all this violence.....Just because I disagree with you politically doesn't give me a license to harm you

Violence solves nothing – from any side, but Rep. Akin has unfortunately invited the wrath of crazies with his ignorant, ill-informed, and right wing fantasies. I hope that both he remains safe and that our country can return to a more rational, reasoned approach – yes, an approach that requires compromise and cooperation.

Chances are the threat came straight from Karl Rove's office and is a smear attempt at Democratic activists.

Is it a "legitimate" complaint, or does he have the ability to ward it off due to hormonal changes, like adrenaline?

    Give me a brake !

This was fabricated by his own advertising firm.

Poor me , see how the radical left socialists make threats of violence towards a respected god loving official who only used a bad choice of words.

Akin probably generated this himself for sympathy.

Now we have elements of the GOP threatening each other.

Can the GOP get any more looney?

Sometimes the authorities should turn their heads and walk away and let nature take its course.

Look to Senator Lisa Murkowski for motivation, and say to hell with the GOP establishment. Easy to stand by a candidate when sailing is smooth and calm. However, when waters are rough, true colours come out.

Hmm, remember Cain and the leaks to the press about his "unfaithful spin"
Then one by one Romney took down his opponents – Bold-face LYING with a vicious grin
And Santorum, ginGRINCH, Perry and the others finally saw Romney and his beast within

If the Lying and the Etch-A-Sketching and the Flip-Flopping from Romney does not work
He would eliminate "anyone" around him before his campaign-run goes berserk!!!

We live in what is supposed to be a civilized society. If you disagree with a politician’s stand then talk about it. There is never justification for threats. Personally, I would be happy if Todd Aiken had never been elected to Congress, but I will support efforts to protect him and condemn threats against him.

Unfortunately, this doesn't surprise me at the least. His safety was the first thing that crossed my mind when he didn't heed to the advise and pull-out. What Akin said was "out there" but, it's genuinely how many in that party feel...and, the politicians are ruthless, greedy thugs....I'm glad he didn't give to their pressure for that reason alone...

Since his views on abortion are the same as the republican platform? Why don't they all withdrow – end of the GOP and end of the problem of stupid candidates for public offices. Its so easy I'm surprised the republicans haven't thought of it before now.

The only thing the Republicans can do now about Akin is to trump-up some fictional story about a threat to him, make him
look vulnerable like a victim so we might possibly forget his outrageous and ignorant lies.

    Here is the deal –
Akin cannot play if he cannot pay. Even though he is still receiving some $, a lot of his financial and political clout is gone.
Even if the guy goes manage to win election, he is damaged goods for the Republican Party. Any legislation tied to this man will result in increased scrutiny from the media and the general public. The guy will forever be known as the "legitimate political timebomb".

I think that he is his own worst threat. He is going to kill his own career. He doesn't need any help with that.

i wouldn't put it past the big wigs in the GOP to threaten him. They're that desperate for power. They've shown they'll do anything.
