Capitol Police, FBI investigating threat against Akin

Washington (CNN) –U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI are investigating a reported threat against Rep. Todd Akin, a police spokeswoman said Thursday.

There is "an active, open investigation, Lt. Kimberly Schneider said, without revealing further details, citing a policy against discussing the security of members of Congress.

Pressure from the mainstream Republican Party has mounted on the Missouri representative to drop his bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in November because of his comments about "legitimate rape" and opposing abortion in rape cases.

Akin was in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday ahead of the Republican National Convention, huddling with top conservative activists and assessing whether to proceed with his embattled candidacy.

Multiple sources at the Council for National Policy conference, which Akin attended, told CNN that the congressman is being encouraged by leading figures in the conservative movement to remain in the Senate race even as he faces pressure from the Republican establishment to withdraw.

Dear God. The man is an ignorant idiot that has no business making major decisions in his government position. I wish we could also hold anyone who has voted for him accountable. PLEASE remember to vote people like this out of office.

Why bother threatening him? I'd rather watch his political career go down in flames.

How about a little more info? From this we can't tell anything about this alleged threat against Akin.Is it supposedly from a Republican who wants him to step down? Supposedly from a Democrat? Or does it sound like some hoax that Akin's staff concocted to try to earn him sympathy from the public?
And what was this "threat" pray tell? It doesn't say anything about serious bodily harm.Even when somebody threatened to assassinate our president a few days ago the public were told what the threat was and who made it. I'd just about bet that this was something like somebody threatened to graffiti Akin's car,or somebody sneaked up behind Akin and tried to give him a wedgie, and Akin is making a mountain out of a molehill to try to gain sympathy.

Could the threat be to push him into dropping out? Inquiring minds want to know.

All this because he forgot where he was and spoke out of the GOP Secret Circle. This shows the true colors of the GOP. More Repubs need to come out from the cellar!

The "conservatives" must want to hand over control of the Senate to the Democrats. That's the only logical reason to keep an idiot like Akin in the race.

Instead of attacking the semantics, people need to address the complete lack of biology that Akin displayed. He honestly believes that a woman has control over whether she can get pregnant or not if she is raped. That is complete hogwash, and any doctor will tell you that's not the case. This is the kind of person we trust to vote on women's reproductive issues, and he doesn't even know the most basic facts about biology.

No matter what you think of Akin, or any other politician, any threat against them must be taken seriously. The last thing we need is another incident like what happened to Gabby Gifford.

I bet you anything the threat was from someone who identifies with republicans. It would seem ironic, but that's the kind of GOP were dealing with these days.

Apparently, there is a sizable group of Americans who phone death threats to people they don't like. The woman who sold Joe Biden his dog received death threats. Apparently these people walk among us posing as normal citizens. Most of them have no intention of killing anyone, but what kind of person would even think of doing that?
