GOP considering extending convention by a day

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Republican Party officials are considering extending their convention by a day, a GOP source confirmed to CNN Sunday.

With Monday’s session suspended due to Tropical Storm Isaac, and with continued uncertainty about the possible impact of the storm on the Gulf Coast, party and convention officials have not ruled out extending the Tampa convention into Friday.

Convention planners breathe a little easier as Isaac shifts away from Tampa

(CNN) – One day after officials decided to postpone the Republican National Convention, concerns about the impact of Tropical Storm Isaac on Tampa, Florida seemed to lighten as the storm indicated its impending track would shift west of the convention site.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced Saturday the convention would officially convene Monday but speeches and other events would not begin until Tuesday afternoon.

Jeb Bush: Obama should stop blaming others for the economy

(CNN) – Jeb Bush, the Republican former governor of Florida, said Sunday it's time for President Barack Obama to stop blaming the ailing economy on President George W. Bush, Obama’s predecessor and Jeb Bush’s brother.

While conceding that Obama did inherit a tough economy when he took office in 2008, Bush said that Obama’s policies have hindered the country's economic growth.

Romney on faith, family and private life

(CNN) – It is a side of Mitt Romney the public often does not see - opening up about his faith, devotion to his family and his work as a Mormon overseas missionary and later church leader at home.

In a rare discussion of these topics, he described to CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger his 2½ years as a teenager serving as a church missionary in France. He said that period helped "ground my relationship with God" and cement his beliefs.

Romney says he's 'very proud' of Mass. health care law

(CNN) – While defending his record on women's issues in an interview that aired Sunday, Mitt Romney praised the Massachusetts health care plan he signed into law as governor.

Romney pointed to the health care law after being asked about Democratic-led attacks that accuse the GOP of launching a so-called war on women.

GOP plans Armstrong tribute

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Republicans planned Sunday to pay tribute to the late astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was the first person to walk on the moon.

Republican National Convention officials put together a video tribute to the astronaut using the 13 LED panels that are part of the stage where Mitt Romney is scheduled Thursday to formally accept the GOP nomination.

Ann Romney gets Secret Service protection

(CNN) – Ann Romney, wife of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, was spotted with a Secret Service detail Sunday morning.

Ann Romney was seen with the detail in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where she and her husband are spending some time before heading to Tampa, Florida, for the Republican National Convention.

New details released on Gingrich’s convention role

(CNN) – The Republican National Committee released details Sunday of a series of policy workshops to be hosted by Newt Gingrich at the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, this week.

In a statement about the schedule, the RNC said that "Newt U" will consist of workshops for delegates aimed at expanding on the daily themes of the convention.

CNN Explains: How today's GOP has its roots in anti-slavery crusade

Washington (CNN) - Some may not realize that the modern Republican Party owes its origin to the fight over slavery nearly two centuries ago.

In the tumultuous mid-1800s, right before the Civil War, some political activists were concerned about keeping slavery from spreading into new western territories, and they saw no way to stop it through existing political powers: the Democrats and the Whigs (the pro-Congress party of the mid 1800s that largely destroyed itself in the 1852 elections in a battle over slavery).
