Paul loyalists say 'we can do better'

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - A small but enthusiastic group of Ron Paul supporters Monday gave an early indication of the presence they hope to have at this week's Republican convention.

After the gavel closed a shortened session Monday afternoon, two dozen supporters of the Texas congressman congregated under a large sign on the convention floor reading "We can do better."

BREAKING: POLLS SHOW RACE REMAINS CLOSE IN CONVENTION STATES As the Republican convention gets under way, a new survey indicates that the battle for Florida’s 29 electoral votes is extremely close. In this crucial battleground state, President Barack Obama holds a 4-point advantage: 50% to 46% over Mitt Romney. In North Carolina, the CNN/Time Magazine/ORC poll indicates a dead heat, with 48% of likely voters supporting Romney and 47% backing Obama.

Both polls are within the survey’s sampling error.

“President Obama has a huge lead in the Democratic strongholds near Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. “Mitt Romney has almost as big a lead in the northern part of the state. The two men are currently battling to a draw in the I-4 corridor, where most Florida elections are won or lost.”

First on CNN: Portman to play Obama in Romney debate prep

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Ohio Sen. Rob Portman has agreed to play the role of President Obama in debate prep sessions with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, two GOP sources tell CNN.

Portman, one of the Romney campaign's leading surrogates on the campaign trail and fundraising circuit, was approached by the campaign about the role earlier this summer and is being provided with briefing materials by top aides in Boston, one of the Republican sources told CNN.

Americans more interested in GOP platform than Romney's speech

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - Mitt Romney's convention speech, widely regarded as the Republican candidate's first introduction to voters who've thus far ignored the presidential race, is less interesting to Americans than the GOP party platform, a poll released Monday showed.

The survey from Pew Research Center showed 52% of Americans were very or somewhat interested in the Republican Party's platform, which was drafted last week and will be adopted by delegates at the Convention. Forty-four percent were very or somewhat interested in Mitt Romney's speech, compared to 46% who were interested in the speech of Romney's running mate, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan.

Tampa spared, but Louisiana delegates look homewards

Wesley Chapel, Florida (CNN) – Tropical Storm Isaac may have spared the convention halls in Tampa, but a potentially devastating path through Louisiana has delegates from the Bayou State closely monitoring the situation back home.

At a delegate breakfast outside Tampa Monday, several tables remained empty, an indication that some Louisiana Republicans were headed home to secure their property as Isaac drew closer. Those that remained for the Republican National Convention said they were praying the storm wouldn't bring the same levels of destruction that have ravaged parts of the state in the past.

GOP sticks to planned Obama-bashing despite convention delay

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Monday was supposed to be Obama-bashing day to launch the Republican National Convention, and GOP organizers showed they weren't going to let something like a tropical storm totally derail their agenda.

While the full proceedings of the first day were canceled, effectively cutting the planned four-day convention to three, Republican officials kept up their efforts to frame President Barack Obama's term as a failure in terms of achievement, direction and substance.
