Ann Romney recounts personal moment

(CNN) – Ann Romney said she has suffered multiple miscarriages, recounting the most profound instance and her youngest son's reaction to the devastating news, in an interview released Tuesday.

In talking about a miscarriage she had in her 40s, Ann Romney –wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney– told a story of their youngest son's devastated reaction to the news, collapsing in tears before his mother. The full interview is scheduled to air Tuesday evening on CBS but the network released a clip in advance.

Mitt Romney acknowledged that he'd not heard the story of how his son reacted until that moment.

Mrs. Romney said that Craig, the youngest of her five boys, badly wanted a little brother or sister. When she became pregnant she said Craig was "thrilled."

"I knew I was losing the baby. It was about three or four in the morning and I decided that I wasn't going to wake Mitt up," said Mrs. Romney. "I waited until it was about six in the morning and I said, 'Mitt, you gotta take me to the hospital right now.'"

Mrs. Romney said Craig was "crestfallen" when he heard the news.

"I was home by the time he got home from school in the afternoon and he walked in the door and he was about ten or 11 years old and he fell on the floor and he just burst into tears," said Mrs. Romney. "And the poor little kid had been at school all day long holding this sorrow inside of him and having no one to speak to, no one to comfort him, no one to explain what is going on."

Romney said after his wife's story that he "hadn't heard the story of Craig coming home from school that day and being so devastated."

CNN previously reported Mrs. Romney's miscarriage. Sources confirmed to CNN that she was about four and a half months pregnant when it happened.

Mrs. Romney, age 63, has battled with multiple sclerosis since being diagnosed in 1998. Mrs. Romney also has described in an interview with CNN in August how she successfully fought an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis in 2008.

Mrs. Romney will speak Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention, creating a bookend effect with her husband as he and running mate Paul Ryan formally expect the Party's nomination on the final day of the convention Thursday.

CNN Senior Producer Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.

Really, you and many more overcome ......it not going to work Ann. You don't understand Ann everyday people. She is playing on people emotions and I don't think that will work. And it will not get the VOTE. She is a FAKE and the white house is not for her. They be trying to change everything. Having Mormon taking over is not a good thing People.
Yea they take care of there own, but what about the other people. Not /she is not the one for the 21st century

This is a crucial example of how twisted the personhood proposal will get. If the Republican platform were to succeed, a natural miscarriage could still be deemed a negligent act by the mother for not bringing the unborn child to birth. Under the Republican platform, even the concept of a being has a right to life. Young Craig may have standing to file suit on behalf of the unborn sibling. We must be very careful about giving rights and privileges to non-existent, unquantified, and unqualified entities. The personhood proposal is another attempt to reduce the wages of working women. Ask yourself, if the proponents that seek state power to uphold life prior to birth are the same proponents that seek state power to uphold life after birth (pre-natal healthcare; public education; after-school programs; job training programs; environmental safety provisions; consumer safety enforement). If the state has an interest in life before birth, why does the state not have an interest in life after birth?

    truth hurts-

Really? This sad little story is not a Democratic or a Republican issue- just as health care ought not be a party issue. I think that you might be confused about what this little story is about. Why in the world is this story presented for a national audience at a political party's convention? Sympathy for the sick and frail is certainly a very human and hopefully universal response- whether it be for the rich or the poor. Unfortunately given this venue, it might appear to be a plea for votes. It would be quite gross if Mr. Romney might exploit his family in such a crass way, if that was in fact the intent.
Alternatively, if this was some sort of "this is my family" introduction session for the rest of America, it was way too much personal information. All I can say is that it is a very good thing they are very, very rich. Mrs. Romney's various ailments would have bankrupted a vast majority of Americans long ago- and probably would have forced them into the universe of Medicaid users. For that they should be grateful.

Regarding Ann Romney's description of the day her child came home from school after Ann's miscarriage and how devastated the child was, Mitt revealed he had never heard the story before!! How can you not share such an incident and why was Ann sitting at home alone after having a miscarriage. I don't see how this interview "humanizes" Romney; it is just another example of his aloofness.
    SPOT ON......maybe its a LIE.........

Hope she is comfortable with all her own little people and all the fake applause as opposed to having to deal with all
    the rif-raf, i.e. "you people".

No matter how many heart wrenching 'from rags to riches' stories Ann tells, Mittens will still be the mannequin that the Kochs and Rove selected to grant their every wish.

Mitt just said that when he replaces Obamacare, he might allow those with preexisting conditions to have coverage. If they didn't have continuous coverage, then they've sealed their own fates. This is why i like him. If you read between the lines and listed for code words, he says it like it is. Essentially, if you lost your insurance for one reason or another, then its you or your parent's fault – and why should anyone else intervene to save your life. It's what Jesus would do if Jesus were Republican.

Never in a million years would I put all of our heartbreaking moments out there for all to hear. She is beginning to
act like the whining person she married. How would she prove her miscarriages to those lawmakers who want
to put doctors in jail, and punish women for having miscarriages that they would deem abortions? This is
just pathetic conversation and she is looking pretty pathetic. Every day there is a new illness, or trauma, or
drama from her personal life. Take a look around you Mrs. Romney, where the real suffering is happening.
You are not alone in having personal challenges, but most people suffer in silence, or at least within the
confines of their families and churches. If your "husband did not know", why tell us?

Ann Romney is probably a nice lady. However neither enough class, brains, performance or anything else to even
begin to compare with Michele Obama.

They won't share their taxes but they expect us to listen to her ob/gyn issues? It's more than a little creepy.

The responses on this page are what is inhuman to me, not the Romneys. If you did your homework, the Romneys did not present this topic; the media delved into her medical history and after prying only exposed what a fight she has had living with debilitating multiple sclerosis and cancer. I am very sorry to hear about her losses and champion any story from the heart from any candidate including our sitting president and the presumptive nominee. We women with Compassion care about other people's struggles and life experiences. It is shameful so many have so much bitterness inside that they choose to only act hateful instead.

This story is very creepy! Besides the fact that for a person in her 40s with other 5 kids that gets pregnant is beyond good common sense, bur she knows she's losing the baby and she doesn't want to disturb her husband and waits until 6:00 am?
    What in the world?!?!

What does Ann comments have to do with Romney. It certainly does NOT change my view of him.

I think the only way she can relate to regular Americans is to state all the ailments she has endured. What she is leaving out and what we all know is that Ann has had the BEST healthcare MONEY CAN BUY. Everyone else though, suffers with their ailments because there just isn't enough money to have the needed surgery. Many American's have the same problems, but talking about them when you are so out of touch with "you people" will just not float.

Nice political move. Lets make everyone feel sorry for me with my health problems. Lucky for her , Mittens is rich and I'am sure she had the best doctors and medical care. Don't think her sob story will work with those that either can't afford health insurance or get substandard care. I'am sure some will fall for this blatant political move, hopefully most will see through her . She's as transparent as her husband. Does anyone really believe Mitt didn't know this story.

Am sorry I do not buy Ann Romney's story. Here is the reason: All young kids (last born) are always jealous to see another baby is born and take their place. Any parent have experienced this. Her last kid (Graig) had elder brothers and didn't feel lonely that he had to ask his mother to have another child. The story doesn't cross my mind. Hmmm! what about trying to match it up with the story of Santorum family.

Why didn't she mention how much her medical treatments cost?
I am sure average people in her medical situation will be bankruptcied or dead without health insurance that government subsidized.

Quite a sad commentary in here about the level of hate the left can hold for somebody that they have never met and don't know. But if she were the wife of a Democrat, you all would be swooning over her. Your leftist ideology has warped your brain it seems. You no longer see anybody as human if they are not one of you.
