John King: Convention goal is changing voters' view of Romney

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - The black and white images form a Reaganesque ring around the concourse of the Tampa convention hall, sending an unmistakable message: This is now Mitt Romney's Republican Party.

Romney's convention challenges are many, beginning with what his top advisers unanimously say is their overriding goal: improve his "image" scores - meaning how voters view him on questions of likeability, empathy, and understanding the struggles of the middle class.

This is a make or break move. The first rule should be to do no harm, and this move has potential to do some damage. If the Republicans try to paint Mitt Romney as something that he is not, then it will come across as juvenile deception. The problem is that "he is who he is" and who he is is not someone who seems to understand the middle class. It would be a mistake to try a paint a picture of Romney as someone who does. But, I know Republicans will try to do exactly that, anyway.

People from MA know Romney very well. Some of his positions on important questions have changed. When he threw his hat into the ring for the 2008 race he had not even finished his term as governor. The health insurance legislation which he had a hand in writing is no longer acceptable. He seemed to have backed off most of the ideas while he was running for the nomination. Once he had the nomination he now touts the MA plan once again.

He has allowed these pacs to speak for him and is willing to accept their support no matter how rough they get or who they malign. If that is who Mr. Romney wants to be good luck to him. It is becoming increasintly clear that the pacs do not have a true place in this election. Their message and the way they go about business are creating a dark cloud over this election. Those behind the pacs are extraordinarily wealthy and they are hiding behind the anonymity of the pacs. The 1% have a big hand to play for Romney and it is clear that whatever they do or so is olay with him.

Who is kidding himself? One speech of Romney will not change how people view him. We should also ask ourselves why do we like someone? It is because of what they do or what they say. Romney hasn't been open to us, especially in releasing his Tax Returns. Romney hasn't showed us that he is one of us. What we know he is for the rich, and he doesn't care at all about us. How come we the poor, can sail on the same boat with him? We are like him less and there is nothing he can do now to change our mind. Too late!

So the GOP wants independent thinking voters to, um, flip flop, ehh?

Mr. Romney is hiding something secretive in those tax returns and off_shore bank accounts and until he comes clean, he doesn`t have a chance for voters to begin to TRUST him.

Mr. Romney is supposed to be a "good manager", better than Obama. Who managed their presidential runs, their teams & it organization BETTER? 2008 Barack Obama or 2012 Mitt Romney?

Romney is Mr. etch-a-sketch. He`ll advance Ryan`s budget, Ryan`s assualt on Medicare, Ryan, Akin & Limbaugh`s assault on women`s rights & dignity.

Good luck getting the independent thinking voter to ignore what they have seen & heard from The corporate raider; Mr. Corporations-Are-People.

But then his SON brings up the tax issue. Tsk, tsk, tsk. To be honest, I don't plan on watching either party's convention. They are big circuses with people thinking they are really important and spending too much money. It wouldn't change my mind on Romney either. He does not care for anyone but himself and the buddies he can protect, and is a bully. I will still vote for Obama.

The problem is that if Romney gets elected and can't whip the economy into shape, he will not win re-election no matter how well he campaigns. Corzine was a money man like Romney and lost because the economy went south which wasn't even his fault.

Romney has to show that he is more than just a money man (or a man made of money). His wife is sympathetic but doesn't get that to her husband. He seems just as stiff as Al Gore.
