Americans for Prosperity dispatches buses on voter turnout push

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - Representatives for Americans for Prosperity, the conservative group behind tens of millions in political advertising, said Tuesday their separate issue advocacy arm was sending three buses around the country to rally activists helping the group gather data on persuadable voters.

The buses, making their debut in Tampa during the Republican National Convention, are plastered with statistics on the national economy, making the case that President Barack Obama is pursuing a "failing agenda."

Obama renews push with young voters as polls suggest support softening

Fort Collins, Colorado (CNN) – Kicking off a three-state tour of college towns on Tuesday, even as Republicans hold their convention, President Obama told students in Iowa that his rivals are actively trying to keep young voters home come Election Day.

“Last week my opponent's campaign went so far as to write you off as a lost generation. That's you, according to them,” Obama told a crowd that numbered 6,000 at Iowa State, his first of two stops Tuesday. “What they hope is that by telling you these things you'll get discouraged and you'll just stay home this time. But you can't – you can't believe it”

Federal court rejects Texas redistricting plan

(CNN) - A three-judge federal court panel on Tuesday rejected a Texas redistricting plan and said it was "enacted with discriminatory intent."

"Texas has failed to show that any of the redistricting plans merits preclearance," which federal law requires before substantial changes are made to voting procedures in some states.

"We are also persuaded by the totality of the evidence that the plan was enacted with discriminatory intent," the court found.

CNN’s GUT CHECK for August 28, 2012

CNN's GUT CHECK | for August 28, 2012 | 4 p.m.
n. a pause to assess the state, progress or condition of the political news cycle

BREAKING: SATISFIED WITH MITT As Mitt Romney prepares to be nominated during tonight’s proceeding at the Republican National Convention, a new CNN/ORC poll finds that roughly seven in ten Republicans are happy with Mitt Romney as their nominee. Historically, that figure is not bad. In mid-August, 2008, more than four in ten Republicans said they would prefer someone other than John McCain as the Republican nominee.

President Barack Obama is on surer footing, however, with 17% of Democrats indicating that they would prefer someone other than the president to win their party’s nomination.

DEVELOPING: READY TO NOMINATE, WITH ONE EYE ON ISAAC... Mitt Romney arrived Tuesday at the condensed Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, as organizers kept a nervous eye on Hurricane Isaac churning toward Louisiana's coast. Among the planned events later Tuesday are the roll calls of the delegates that will show that Romney has locked up the necessary support for the party's nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in November. – Tom Cohen
