Rules to double U.S. fuel economy by 2024

New York (CNNMoney) - The Obama administration finalized new fuel economy rules Tuesday that within 12 years will almost double today's standard for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon.

The rules, which have been in the works for several years, will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new cars. But in the long run, regulators say, drivers will spend less on gas, outweighing the additional cost at the dealership. They say the rules will also help reduce the nation's oil imports.

'Shy' and 'humble' Romney has chance for re-introduction, Boehner says

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Mitt Romney's Thursday night speech at the Republican National Convention will allow the Republican candidate to break through a "shy" exterior and speak directly to voters, House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday.

"He is a very shy guy. He is a humble guy. He doesn't like to talk about himself. That's who he is," Boehner told CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash. "But I've known Mitt Romney for a long time. Decent, honest, hard working guy. And I think Thursday he'll have a chance to reintroduce himself to the American people."

Dems continue onslaught as Romney arrives in Tampa

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Democrats continued blasting Mitt Romney, as well as other speakers at the Republican National Convention, on Tuesday as the Republican presidential candidate made his way to Tampa for his official nomination.

The Democratic National Committee spliced together clips of news reports on businesses closed by Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney headed in the 1990s. The video ends with a tough rebuke on a now-frequent attack line from Republicans: "Mitt Romney: You didn't build that, you destroyed it."
