Santorum offers high profile praise of Romney

Tampa, Florida (CNN) – Rick Santorum offered his most high-profile praise of former rival Mitt Romney during a speech at the Republican National Convention Tuesday evening.

The former presidential candidate – who engaged in a prolonged and sometimes bitter battle with Romney before dropping out of the race in April – spoke highly of Romney and vice presidential nominee, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan.

At one point, he spoke passionately about a social issue to praise Romney.

"If America is going to succeed, we must stop the assault on marriage and the family in America today," Santorum said. "From lower taxes to reforming social programs, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are dedicated to restoring the home where married moms and dads are … raising good kids in our neighborhoods."

Santorum also praised Romney on the issue of education.

"Mitt Romney believes that parents and the local community must be in charge of our schools – not the Department of Education," Santorum said.

And weighing in on the current debate over welfare, Santorum accused President Obama of acting like "he's above the law" by "waiving the work requirement for welfare."

Though Romney and his supporters have pushed that claim, independent fact checkers have said it is false.

Ending his speech, Santorum made a direct appeal for Romney's election.

"In November we have the chance to vote for life and liberty, not dependency," Santorum said. "A vote for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will put our country back in the hands of leaders who understand where America can - and for the sake of our children must go - to keep the dream alive."

How sad that people like Fred attack people on welfare. What about the filthy rich like Romney who do EVERYTHING in their power to not pay taxes! Hey, Fred, are you tired of them too? Just asking.

The Republicans are trying to put this nation back on track after 4 years of Obama failure.
    -----------------------------------------------------
Republicans "put us off the track" with EIGHT YEARS of Bush's poor leadership – optional war, cut & spend economy, and a corrupt relationship with the defense contracting world. Have you seen "W" at the NRC? Why not?

You'd have some measure of credibility if you'd just man-up and admitt you screwed the pooch and rather than obstruct progress, help us move towards the future. You can't pretend Bush didn't exist! You can't pretend Republicans obstructed progress! You can't pretend Romney is anything but a flip-flopping lap-dog for the Koch brothers!

Santorum, Newt, Bachman, etc, are all hypocrites for praising Romney after attacking him. Hillary is a hypocrite for attacking Obama and then joining him. BFD, folks, hypocrisy is a natural to politicians as breathing. Ron Paul is probably the least hypocritical one out there, and look how much good it did him.

Rudy NYC-Santorum said that Pres. Obama removed the work requirement from welfare, just after he said that the law was carefully written so that a president would not be able to do that.

yet King Obama did so thru executive fiat. Now it is up the Congress to challenge the constitutionality of this fiat. What is astounding is u have not figure that this is waste taxpayer time and money to do this challenge instead of focusing on the issues. Another distraction fr Obama, but what do u expect fr Obama who has no ideas on how to fix the economy.

once upon a horse-" Mitt Romney is the WORST candidate we could run against Barrack Obama" say what you want about the Clinton/Obama match in 2008 NOTHING was said as bad as things that were said about Romney by the likes of Newt Gingrinch and Rick Santorum...

U mean like when Hilary called Obama a liar and Bill said Obama was living in a fairy tale, played the race card on me or that obama is not qualified. Note for all the nastiness bet. the Clintons/Obama, Clintons were 100% right about Obama.

From all the comments I see that civility is a lost art, that bigotry and hate are alive and well and that reason and logic have given way to fear mongering and baseless character assassination. What have we become when we denigrate each other with such impunity?

Contrast the resume of Obama & Romney. Who exactly is more qualified? A guy who never ran anything in his life, knows nothing about how business & the economy works, has no new ideas to solve problems, is out golfing, hob-knobbing with the rich & elites; or a guy who actually has experience running a state, saving it, saving the olympics, has over 80% success rate at his own business, started fr scratch and built his own business etc? If u r a kool aid drinker stick to Obama. If u acutally care about the problems of this country u pick the guy who is most qualified to run this country, & fix this economy. It is that simply. Would u put Obama in charge of your own business given his track record?

When Romney has to have all these people come out and vouch for him to help people like him to help people try to understand him when he himself can't do it for himself.....this speak volumes about this man....When his wife has to try to make people think he is a good husband and father and grandfather to try to make him look like a caring man....this speaks volumes about what kind of man he really is when he can't do it himself....what all these people have to say about Romney doesn't make him Presidential, if Romney can't get people to like him on his own then he isn't President material......

  16. Really?

@Larry L – you can't pretend Obama's record is NOT far more dismal than Bush's. Why are we still in Afghanistan and why is Obama helping to overthrow the gov of Syria. (Liberals say we should not police the world but it's okay when their false messiah does it.) Why have the MuslimBotherhood taken control of Egypt under Obama's watch? Why is unemployment so high? Why would Obama vote for legislation allowing a live baby be put to death after a failed abortion? Why has Obama increased the national debt far more than Bush did? Why does Obama enact programs that give incentives to people for intentionally NOT making their mortgage payments? Why did he just change the welfare to work program (which Clinton signed into law) back to the welfare to welfare program? Why does Obama want to turn this nation into a "fundamentally" different America called Collectivism? Why? Could it be because he hates this country and only uses the freedoms we have to destroy it? Is his wife proud of him yet? And you still defend him?

We elected a great orator in Obama but he had absolutely no skills to lead our nation. He was a shiny package but we ended up with an empty box whose record is so poor Democrats don't even talk about it. All he has done is move us toward European socialized medicine.

Christie and Santorum speeches can't have been very good if they were overshadowed by Ann Romney who apparently gave the best speech ever to be given at a national convention. According to all the pundits she did anyway. This entire convention is one big throw up in my mouth event - including the media coverage talking points.

Santorum's remark was a conundrum. Both statements cannot possibly be true, although he pretended that they were.

Guess what? He told the truth when he said that he personally saw to it that the law was written in such a way that a President could not circumvent the work requirement. Naturally, that means when Republicans claim that President Obama did, then they are blatantly lying to the American people.

True about Hillary, but in the end, her and Obama made peace for the sake of party unity. Say what you want about democrats, but at least their party is unified and, for the most part, on the same page. WITHOUT UNITY, YOUR PARTY IS NOTHING!!!!!! Sorry to yell . If you want more proof, just ask Jon Huntsman.

What is sad is Democrats has made success in business a bad thing.

Voters better decide what direction they want the country to go. If abortion on demand is the issue for you, vote demo but you would have done that anyway.

If the economy is the thing, your job and supporting your family, you cannot vote for the President. The next four years, only Romney has a chance of getting cooperation from pols in Washinton. No Rep is going to hielp Pres O, pass a law. Can you afford 4 years of deadlock. Just as Pelosi and Reid are not going anywhere, neither are conservative Rep.....nothing will get done....can your family afford that??

Lastly, internationally, do we become one of 300 all equal nations while keeping the UN funded or do we step up to the plate and try to lead. You decide......vote.

If the Pres doesnt have the power to waive the Federal rules on work for welfare , and give more power to the states to determine their own rules like Santoum says , then why did Romney and several other governors when he was govenors write to Pres Bush to request a waiver for their states

@UDidntBuildThat: Both of Santorum's statements cannot be true. One of them is a lie, and you know it. That's why my post caught your attention. You felt that you had to refute it. The whole Republican party is now trying to mislead the voters on what Pres. Obama did. Likewise for the $716B Medicare lie, when in fact Paul Ryan takes out more to pay for his tax cuts to the wealthy.

What does it say about a man that cannot define his own character? When a man has to have his wife, every politican, and anyone else he can get to vouch for his character....that means he has no character and can not be a good leader....having rich billionaire women try to speak for him to get the women of this country to vote for him to see him as a caring and understanding man to womens issue all the while he is against abortion, lower wages for women, wanting to take away your healthcare.....If he can't get people to like him on his own, if he can get people to understand him without the help of others, if he can't define himself for the man he is.......than he isn't man enough to hold the highest office in this country.
