CNN Fact Check: Santorum misleads on 'dependence'

(CNN) - Rick Santorum evoked the homespun values of hard work, education and family in his speech to the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night, but his math needs improvement.

The former Pennsylvania senator and runner-up in this year's GOP race criticized President Barack Obama during his convention speech for what he called a belief "in government handouts and dependency."

The Republican party is as frightening as ever. Where is W? He needs convention time to convince the undecided voters on how repeating his failed policies will somehow make things better.

If Santorum is including Medicare and Social Security recipients as part of the group that is dependent on government handouts, and he wishes to end dependency on government, then the implication is that he wishes to end Medicare and Social Security. I think the people who have paid payroll taxes into these programs for 40 years would have a different opinion as to their dependecy, and the legitamacy of any attempt to end these programs.

As for Santorum, wasn't he dependent on government when he received payments from the local government to home school his children ? But I guess there's a reason why that kind of depency is OK.

In the end we are all dependent on the government in some way. Otherwise, how would we even get to work in the morning ?
