(CNN) – A United States Secret Service agent traveling with Mitt Romney accidently left a firearm in the lavatory of his charter airplane Wednesday during a trip to Indianapolis.
The firearm was discovered by a reporter for CBS News/National Journal, who told a flight attendant about it, according to a story posted by CBS News. Romney was traveling from Tampa, Florida to Indianapolis, Indiana to deliver a speech.

Romney, who will formally accept the Republican presidential nomination Thursday, was seated in the front of the airplane that consisted of campaign aides, reporters and U.S. Secret Service agents.
"We are aware of the incident," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said in a statement. "We take the care and custody of our equipment, especially firearms, very seriously. This matter will be dealt with internally and in an appropriate matter."

Did someone really just say "the secret service is part of the Department of the Treasury"?????
Wow! Come on America!
Somebody's getting super-fired!
Big deal. He/She took of their gun, went to the bathroom, forgot to put it back on, and quickly got it. Not sure why this is news. They shouldn't be fired for it; It'd be like you leaving a important document in your car while walking into your office, and then run back to your car to get it. Makes no sense to fire someone for a simple mistake. Believe it or not, SS Agents are people too.
Who's paying for Secret Service? I thought only Presidents got that kind of protection?
If you or I left a loaded weapon in a lavatory we would be finded, jailed and probably lose our ccp. PP
Secret service is under Dept of homeland security. You need to learn more about the service before you talk trash. Mistakes always make headlines but the major arrests and operations that federal law enforcement conduct everyday rarely get noticed. Law Enforcement keep us safe. Mistakes happen... We are human.
SS is part of the Treasury Department
Elliot Ness? Most famous Treasury Cop ever! SS
@Willie,
The Secret Service is part of the Department of the Treasury......
@Willie – The secret service was indeed a part of the treasury until 2003 when it was transfered to the dept of homeland security.
I believe they are part of dept of treasury,, they also deal with counterfeit money.Wow, come on!
One doesn't have to be educated to become a secret service agent. Minimum requirements are valid drivers license and citizenship. Age cut off is 37 at time of acceptance, with older people of military experience getting a pass on that. As of 2005, the Secret Service falls under Homeland Security. We all know why they deserve protection because fanatics tied to either party are capable of killing anyone. I may not want a candidate to win, but I also don't want them killed or their families killed or kidnapped.
just a mistake...he wount do it again........
@Willie...Yes the Secret Service is part of the Treasury Dept. Agents are also under Homeland Security.
He made a big mistake..so do we he will learn from it.....
For what it's worth per Wikipedia: The United States Secret Service is a United States federal law enforcement agency that is part of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The sworn members are divided among the Special Agents and the Uniformed Division. Until March 1, 2003, the Service was part of the United States Department of the Treasury. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secret_Service
The whole Dept. of Treasury isn't that far off, they were under that branch until 2003. Only then going to Dept of Homeland Security. There are no education requirements to become an agent, citizenship and a valid drivers license, age cut off 37. I may not agree with a candidate but I would hate to see a family torn apart, like the Kennedys' because crazy people are everywhere and the political scene brings them out like no other place.
Leaving the gun in the lavatory of a chartered jet aircraft is only slightly better than leaving it in a brothel or strip club. What has happened to the discipline in the Secret Service? I think that this agent needs to pull heavy duty in a catholic elementary school under the guidance of a few good nuns.
don't we have enough of a gun-violence issue in this country? i think people TRAINED to handle a weapon should set a better example than that. oh well at least no one got hurt...this time
Yes, the Secret Service is part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury !!!!!!
OOPS. I may be wrong in stating that the Secret Service is part of the Treasury. It used to be a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. I believe in now falls under The Department of Homeland Security.
Lucky the reporter did not go rogue and start shooting. Maybe the agent was a little too relaxed because of the "aircraft" he was on.
Yes, Willie, someone did say that the SS was part of the Treasury Department. Are they wrong? Yes, but only because they are now part of Homeland Security. However, prior to the establishment of Homeland Security they were indeed part of Treasury. The SS does not just protect, they are law enforcement and one of their main duties involves counterfeit investigation. So before you go and try to make yourself sound smart, try doing a little research. You are a self rightous idiot. Thank you SS agents who put your well being on the line every day for our country. Now pay attention to where your weapons are!
Hey Willie,
The United States Secret Service, one of the nation's oldest federal investigative law enforcement agencies, was founded in 1865 as a branch of the U.S. Treasury Department.
he meant to take his ring off on takeoff, and took off his piece instead, hoping to get a piece at the next stop. worked well for the service on their presidential stop in south america, why not with the mister?
The Secret Service used to be part of the Dept of Treasury, up until about 10 years ago due their main role of investigating counterfeit US currency. I believe its part of the Dept of Homeland Security now.
