Secret Service agent misplaces weapon on Romney plane

(CNN) – A United States Secret Service agent traveling with Mitt Romney accidently left a firearm in the lavatory of his charter airplane Wednesday during a trip to Indianapolis.

The firearm was discovered by a reporter for CBS News/National Journal, who told a flight attendant about it, according to a story posted by CBS News. Romney was traveling from Tampa, Florida to Indianapolis, Indiana to deliver a speech.

Romney, who will formally accept the Republican presidential nomination Thursday, was seated in the front of the airplane that consisted of campaign aides, reporters and U.S. Secret Service agents.

"We are aware of the incident," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said in a statement. "We take the care and custody of our equipment, especially firearms, very seriously. This matter will be dealt with internally and in an appropriate matter."

Lol! The Secret Service IS a Treasury Dept branch. They were first founded to stop counterfeiting.

And you don't just lose a gun....I know, I carry!

You do realize they were first established to go after yea they were originally under Treasury...WOW! Know before you speak smartass!

2002 The Department of Homeland Security was established with the passage of (Public Law 107-296) which in part, transfered the United States Secret Service from the Department of the Treasury, to the new department effective March 1, 2003.

I guess he was very "detailed oriented" and provided his service with "due diligence". On the other hand, just wondering, what did Secret Service do on the plane again?

SS agents must follow strict procedure to make sure all firearms are with them at all time.

It is a weapon, not a gun. The upshot? You have an unarmed unaware agent on duty. If he is not careful he will soon be promoted and given a pay increase far beyond the publics' imagination. Worked for holders boys.

Formerly under Department of Treasury. Homeland Security took it over. Something I was surprised to find out was that as of 1997 Secret Service for former Presidents now ends after 10 years..... Clintons are the last to get lifelong protection.

CBS guy should have said, bro is it yours. End of story. I think agent was a rookie, not a big deal. I always forget my keys in truck.

The responsible agent should be removed from the detail immediately and reassigned to chasing phony $100 bills in Nome AK or Fargo ND. In December. This is an embarassment to the Secret Service. Barney Fife doesn't belong on a critical protection detail. How do you forget your gun??? Absolutely inexcusable. Found by a reporter? Have you seen some of the clowns in the press pool lately? There are no second chances for any critical protection detail. Hopefully there is bipartisan agreement on this issue.

Why do they call it the Secret Service if we all know about them?

This is being blown out of proportion. I have personally heard of this happening to other law enforcement officers, both male and female. People make mistakes. Haven't we all left something behind absent mindedly before?
Think of the circumstances. This would be an easy thing to do in a small aircfraft lav.

Well, apparently he had to run to the head so fats and take such a mighty dump that totally exhausted him, so he forgot his toy there. Must be the food they serve on Romney's charter.

Is any part of government functioning properly under Obama's leadership? Romney should just hire private security until he gets in office, and can fix yet another of Obama's embarrassing failures.

How does an agent assigned to protect leave a loaded firearm in a bathroom of an airplane. I dont buy it. Remove him from duty. Have him investigated. This is not a brain laps it is a real problem that requires evaluation.
