Editor's note: The 2012 presidential race is CNN Chief National Correspondent John King's seventh campaign. He analyzed what challenger Mitt Romney and Republicans needed to do in their convention last week.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (CNN) - It is a very different year – and very different mood - as Democrats gather for their convention. But there is one carryover from 2008: To win the White House, Barack Obama will once again have to make history.

I am a registered Democrat and voted for Obama the first time. Not this time. His energy policy wanting to make coal ash a hazardous waste material is insane. Mrs. Jackson is now into OVER regulation. Also, being an christian african american male-his same sex marriage comments may also have swayed many of my family members.

Americans will have to make history and REJECT the petty and/or partisan and/or racist but clearly, UNPRINCIPLED opposition that the Republican party has heeped upon Barack Obama.

The case for this is strong. Whenever the President could act independent of Congress [think Libya, takingout bin Laden, etc.] he has been ENORMOUSLY successful. When he needed to work a compromise with Republicans and THEY were willing, there was no problem. The problems arose whenever he could be "filibustered".

The history that America needs to make is to reject and punish obstructionism by Congress, vote a STRAIGHT ticket in 2012 & 2016.
