Poll: Romney 47%-Obama 43% in N.C.

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) – As the Democratic National Convention gets underway in Charlotte, a new poll indicates Mitt Romney has a slight advantage in this battleground state.

According to an Elon University/Charlotte Observer/Raleigh News & Observer survey released Monday, the Republican presidential nominee holds a 47%-43% advantage over President Barack Obama among likely voters in North Carolina. The GOP challenger's four point margin over Obama is within the poll's sampling error. The survey was conducted August 25-30, just before and during Republican Convention in Tampa, Florida.

A CNN/Time Magazine/ORC International poll released one week ago, before the start of the Republican Convention, indicated a dead heat, with Romney at 48% and the president at 47% among likely voters in the Tar Heel State.

The Democratic Convention kicks off in Charlotte officially on Tuesday.

According to the survey, Romney has a 52%-39% when it comes to which candidate would do a better job on the economy. The poll also indicates Romney has a 12-point lead among male voters, with the candidates basically tied among female voters. Obama had a double digit advantage among women in last week's CNN poll.

Obama narrowly won North Carolina four years ago, the first Democrat to carry the state in a presidential election since 1976. Fifteen electoral votes are up for grabs in the state.

The Elon University/Charlotte Observer/Raleigh News & Observer survey was conducted by telephone, with 1,089 likely voters in North Carolina questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Is it +/- 3% for each figure or the confidence that the differences within +/-3% are due to error? Thanks for clarifying.

I see David Gergen is affiliated with the sponsor of this poll. I wonder what his Republican talking points will be? I actually used to respect the man until he began circulating the anti-Obama talking points Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan began issuing to the media the day after Obama's Inauguration. Bad, bad Obama. Bad speech, Obama. Too much T.V. coverage Obama. Too far to the left, Obama. Not working enough with the Republicans, Obama. On and on the anti-Obama nonsense from Gergen went, for 4 long years.

Want to know why our economy hasn't grown as it should have ... look to the likes of Gergen, who fell for the Republican establishment hard, making Obama out to be someone he wasn't. All the while, praising those who did take our country to the brink ... and were willing to keep it there, at all costs.

CNN probably won't publish this post, but it sure felt good getting it off my chest.

Polls are looking good. Glad to see more women are thinking with their heads istead of Obama's charisma and sweet talk.

I think the country is in better place than it was four years ago, the economy is steady and improving, the banks are healthy, the automobile industry is going well, we have plan for health care, osama bin laden is dead, the iranians are suffering under crushing sanctions, the egyptians and libians have budding democracies, we are out of iraq and have plan to leave afganistan, yes Ithink we are in a much better place than four years ago. Don't feed the greed! Vote Obama/ Biden 2012 The way forward

Obama's supporters keep telling us about the millions of jobs he created. Why then is the unemployment rate so high?

Sadly, the educated, progressive, socially tolerant , independent voters are a numerical minority in the red states. The heart of the Republican base, comprised of under-educated, bigoted, fearful, white racists does well in the South. Romney's campaign of distortions, lies, and conspiracies plays well with this population. He can offer low taxes, cheap gas, great healthcare, huge defense budget, and a reduced deficit without anybody asking how he plans to pay for these things. He can tell them about the Mormon religion without explaining their real position towards Evangelical theology. He can ask them to trust him but won't trust them with a look at his tax returns – like all others have done.

  8. Romney/Ryan = Bought & Paid For All Along

The Romney/Ryan will kill Medicare. They gave the actual details in the primary election when Romney was trying to appeal to conservatives. Now that he's trying to please everybody his story is modified – the Etch-A-Sketch act we were promised by his owm handlers.

When talking about events in the 18 century. Just like today we talk about the 21 century in real time. So Obama must be talking about The Constitution in 1776. He wants to change it?

  11. Romney/Ryan = Bought & Paid For All Along

The Romney/Ryan will kill Medicare. They gave the actual details in the primary election when Romney was trying to appeal to conservatives. Now – no specifics on anything! Now that he's trying to please everybody his story is highly modified – the Etch-A-Sketch act we were promised by his owm handlers. Romney is the inventor of Obamacare. He was pro-choice until he needed to be a social-conservative. He was a draft-dodger who now wants war with Syria and Iran. He hides his taxes to keep people from seeing his true character. Think! Turn off Fox News and think!

Wait until the debates then I believe Obama will pull ahead. He needs to debunk the political right wing propaganda that has flooded the air. When oranges are compared to lemons then and only then will Obama shine

Four points is within the margin of error? That's not a poll, it's a guess.

Do these people have any clue what being a Mormon is? Are they ready to shut all commerce down on Sunday? Here in Utah most of it is! Have they ask the question to Mitt about his secret oaths in his temple? Ask a Mormon about the blood oath, that the Mormons conveniently took out of the ceremony so that Reed Smoot could get elected to the government. The blood oath is against the United States Government for the blood of the slain profit Joseph Smith. Or ask them about all of the other strange things they swear to! Ask most Mormon women if they feel they have a fair standing among their men. If you can get anyone of them to hold their head high enough to look you in the eye, they will lie to you and bow to their priesthood holder. It is an oppressive religion to women, (like most i guess). Everyone thinks Utah is a backwards weird state, because it is! There is no way that Mitt will be able to govern, without letting his weird religious beliefs influence him!
