Rallying delegates, Pelosi fires off on GOP

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, no stranger to receiving or giving political criticism, quickly took aim at major Republican policies Monday while addressing her home state's delegation at event ahead of the Democratic National Convention.

"Destruction is (the GOP's) political philosophy. It's not that they have a better idea," she told the California crowd at a breakfast in Charlotte, North Carolina. "But doing nothing is their philosophy. They do not believe in a public role."

Chief among the issues on her list was a Republican proposal to replace Medicare with a system that offers subsidies to seniors. She said Democrats "reject" the so called Ryan plan, a proposal authored by GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan. The plan, which is part of a larger budget bill, was passed by the House this year but has not moved in the Senate.

In the face of Democratic attacks in recent weeks, Ryan has defended the plan as one that would extend benefits to seniors and create a more lasting, less costly system. The central idea of the proposal calls for the government to give seniors credit to purchase their own insurance. The issue was brought to the forefront in the presidential election when Mitt Romney named Ryan as his running mate.

Pelosi, however, called the plan "a trick to end Medicare" and argued the proposal offers large tax breaks in exchange for making seniors pay more for insurance.

"It's wrong. It's morally wrong. It's economically wrong," Pelosi said. "To vote for Medicare, vote Democratic."

Pelosi also pointed to what she labeled "extremism" in the Republican Party, namely citing Republican opposition to an Obama administration policy that earlier called for religiously-affiliated institutions to include contraception coverage in their health care plans. After fierce resistance from religious communities and Republicans, the administration amended the policy. She argued it was one more example of what Democrats have described as a GOP-fueled war against women.

The congresswoman, a fund-raising giant who's celebrating her 25th year in Congress this year, also cried foul on outside spending by conservative groups in elections this year. Faulting the Supreme Court decision that paved the way for unlimited super PAC spending, Pelosi said the results have amounted to a system that is "suffocating the airwaves in special interest money" and "poisoning the debate."

Bolstering her point, she said democracy was "a government of many, not the government of money."

Democrats are not immune to outside spending, however. President Barack Obama's re-election in February said it began pushing top Democratic donors to contribute to Priorities USA Action, a super PAC group supportive of the president.

Pelosi is scheduled to address the entire convention at the Time Warner Cable arena this week.

If the failed ex governor of MA, gets elected because people have suddenly gone stupid, will he blame Obama when he destroys social security and medicare, when we are in two more unfunded wars, when his additional tax cuts for the wealthy add $5 trillion to the national debt?

The Gop congressional bafoons should be kicked off the public dole with their free healthcare ,then they would be happy to have obamacare , and their 175,000 salaries for non performance, they would have already been fired from any companies they worked for and get rid of their unessasary staffs that add to the defict their always moaning about .if you can't do the job by yourself , don't run for office ,losers!!!!

Pelosi says it's a government of many, yes it's a government of many new government workers and democrats wasting our money (GSA, Solyndra, Health Care Act) and addressing every issue with let's tax more. Their biggest 'accomplishment' is supporting the Bush Tax cuts and then claim it as Obama's protecting the middle class...ha! Classic. I voted for Obama, not going to fool me twice.

►"But doing nothing is their philosophy. They do not believe in a public role."◄
And the Republicans are trying to tell a story that is over eight years OLD
"Yes," they say, "we have ALL of the answers and it goes something like this...”
But instead the convention reintroduces Romney & an empty chair proving their solutions are amiss!!!

How Ironic – I find it ironic that you were not aware that taxes are the lowest in 50 years due to the stimulus. It is also ironic that you did not know there are fewer government workers now than under Bush. I also find it ironic that you said you voted for Obama, when Palin spoke your kind of language.

Watching some of the talk shows this a.m., I noticed how nervous and uptight the GOP spokespeople are. The DNC convention hasn't actally started yet and here they are, in FULL blast mode against the president. The American people have not even had the chance yet to listen to what the president and the democrats are proposing, and Rinse Penis and his lazy, corporate welfare buddies are hard at work distorting and twisting their lies. The truth is, they realize they blew their chance last week and they are now desperate to try and ruin any chance the democrats have to set the record straight. It's too late and too bad, because it's OUR turn now and I can't wait to see a real convention without hours of wasted time trying to humanize a candidate.

It also tells you all you need to know, when the candidate's (Romney's) speech was so off point–it was upstaged by an 80+ old man talking to a chair.

Go democrats and God Bless America.

The only thing the GOP has done for the last 4 years were to be the party of "NO". Now they ask, what has the president done in the last 4 years.
I'm sure the republicans can see what was happening from day one. If not, shame on them. "SHAME"

The entire state of California should be embarassed that the gave us this hag!

I'm sure you live in some red welfare state someplace and ignorant name calling is all your party knows how to do but as an answer to your question, no, we aren't embarassed and we happen to LIKE and APPRECIATE the work Ms. Pelosi is doing. In fact, it is YOU and YOUR angry party who should be embarassed. Presenting us with a town drunk, who exercises no control over his party. It is YOU and YOUR party who vowed to bring this president down and the American people with him if YOUR demands were not met. It is YOU and YOUR party who let this country get downgraded just to try and humilitate the president on a national stage and I could go on and on but actions speak louder than words and I, along with many others will show YOU just how much embarassed we are when we vote to send YOUR lazy, unAmerican job shipping candidate packing.

You see, your voter suppression doesn't work in California.

The empty chair is being saved for the do nothing GnoP. They are in their positions to help American people. Except their turtle boy McConnel telling them to just say NO to everything President Obama wants. Congress has an approval rating in the teens, they need to go away.

Pelosi knows the hand the GOP dealt Obama on day one because the GOP created it and they had no plans to help fix it and the GOP considered Americans no more than "collateral damage" in the process.

Sorry, but at that time the national unemployment was lower, so Mass was higher, and in that state the budget MUST be balanced anyway whoever is in charge. There were numerous other reasons that Rmoney was a bad governor. It scares me if Vulture & Voucher get into office. I'll stick with Pres. Obama & give him the benefit of the doubt, thanks very much.
