(CNN) - First lady Michelle Obama walked onto the stage of the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night fully aware of the task at hand.
It was her job to paint her husband - the president - as a family man and as a leader with a vision for the country.
She passed with flying colors - pink and grey to be exact.

Twitter reported more than 28,000 tweets per minute during Obama’s prime time speech, nearly double that of Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s.
And many of them focused on what she had on.
Obama lit up the arena in a luminescent rosy pink dress with grey floral detailing. Perhaps the most physically fit of all the first ladies, she showed off her toned arms and shoulders in the sleeveless cut frock, with just a sliver of her back through a small key hole. The full knee-length skirt had an easy element of movement as she approached the podium.
The first lady turned to African-American designer Tracy Reese for the night’s dress.
"I am so honored that first lady Michelle Obama chose to wear Tracy Reese for her speech at the Democratic National Convention," the designer told CNN National Correspondent Alina Cho. "As always, she looked stunning and spoke so eloquently. I was incredibly moved!"
Obama has worn Tracy Reese on numerous occasions, including the Easter Egg Roll and her photo shoot with People Magazine.
“Michelle Obama is the epitome of grace & wisdom. Her speech was utterly inspiring...so was her dress, perfect skin and arms. #2012DNC,” tweeted Lauren Molina of New York.
“#Salute @MichelleObama just came out and smashed the game! Love the outfit, dress, pumps, hair, makeup! Classy and beautiful!” said WNBA player Swin Cash.
And Comedy Central’s indecision feed joked: “That sound you hear is all the reporters scrambling for adjectives to describe Michelle Obama's dress.”
Reese too took to Twitter to respond to the compliments.
“Thanks everyone for sharing this amazing moment! We are all so grateful and honored to have dressed Mrs. Obama for such a momentous speech!!!” she wrote.
Obama complemented Reese’s art with a pair of $245 rhubarb suede pumps from J. Crew, which she reportedly bought herself.
The outfit subtly reflected the Democratic Party’s support of the middle class. Most dresses on Tracy Reese’s website run between $250 and $450.
That’s a stark contrast to the Oscar de la Renta dress Ann Romney wore when addressing the Republican National convention, which reportedly cost $1,900.
Obama’s fashion sense has long made her somewhat of an icon.
A leaf print dress she wore from White House Black Market on The View, sold out from all its locations within 48 hours of her TV appearance.
In 2009, the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored Obama with the special style award, which she now shares with the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
"She (the first lady) always surprises with her fashion choices,” Kate Betts, author of “Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style,” told CNN’s John King last year.
“She writes her own rules when it comes to fashion and I think that's what keeps us riveted by her fashion and keeps us paying attention to her."
CNN’s Alina Cho contributed to this report.

Well , she's a smart, educated, straightforward and sensible woman, who is wholesomely gorgeous. Amazing First Lady. No matter how much Republicans despise her husband ,they have to be addle-brained to think that a woman of this caliber would have stayed with the man they want us to believe her husband is. She's any sane person's proof that there is nothing weird, twisted, hateful, crooked , or mean about the President.
very unprofessional dress in my opinion for a convention. more like a dress you would go to for a party or a drunken brawl!
Michelle Obama is a Class Act.
A beautiful first lady!
I also was quite taken by the freshness of her appearance and manner. I do not generally notice fashion one way or another, considering it less important in the scheme of things. However, as Mrs. Obama spoke with clarity and integrity about her husband and her family, I was struck with how "fitting" her attire was. It moved with her, and spoke its own language of artfulness, classy and playful at the same time. Tracy Reese is a master of fabric and style, and she deserves this attention. Congratulations!
What in the world does it matter what she was wearing?! Good lord.
look all, its the obama's and those who waste your tax dollars and make a joke of all Americans. it is time to stop the bleeding which is caused by the trash in the white house, it is time to put the trash to the curb.
Interesting that an article about Mrs. Obama's dress does not have a picture of Mrs. Obama's dress.
DNCNN displays more and more journalistic excellence and impartiality every day. NOT....
Amazing, amazing, awe inspiring speech from Mrs. Michelle Obama....what a tribute to the President, to her family and to this country. Dignity, grace, and eloquence exuded throughout her speech and I am terribly inspired and encouraged.
Why is what women wear news?
I thought we covered this topic a few weeks ago when Hillary Clinton responded to a reporter who asked her about her clothes: "Would You Ever Ask a Man that Question?"
Only Michelle Obama could revive the bustle.
Do all your stories about the convention speakers focus on what they were wearing rather than what they said, or just the women? I came here looking for information on her speech and the only story on the front page was about her dress – what kind of news reporting is this?
When this lady speak, you have a edge to listen. Specially when she talk about her back grown, Her husband and education. You can see in life who is sincere , who only speak just to speak. "First lady's dress gets high marks " – Ann Romney knocks them out with her speech, Michelle Obama gets noted for her dress.
You are kidding – Right, She makes a speech that had persons on their feet and tears in their eyes from the truths spoken and you write about her *&%##^$$ dress!!!! And we all wonder what is wrong with the american political system and its reporting by the mass media.....
She is wonderful. I"m voting for Barack Obama.
What new rules does she write? That if you are tall, beautiful and rich you can look really, really good on super important occasions? Not that I'm complaining – that dress was FABOO.
One Word: AMAZING
It would be nice if this front page article on CNN also contained something about what was said in her wonderful speech as well.
This women gives an incredible speech, delivered with passion and dignity. One that sets an example for the entire country to follow. And the headline is her dress? Shame on CNN.
Front page cnn...The first lady's DRESS? WOW! The Democrats are really succeeding...in losing the election. "Look...how pretty", "Look...beautiful dress", "Look...nice skin and arms", "Look...there goes another fence sitter over to the Romney camp"! Woops.
