Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) - Bill Clinton tinkered with his 50-minute stemwinder of a convention speech for "weeks and weeks," his longtime friend Terry McAuliffe told CNN Thursday.
"He really took it on himself and said, 'It's my responsibility to lay out the case for what President Obama has done,'" McAuliffe said.

Clinton won rave reviews for explaining, in folksy and often combative detail, Obama's accomplishments since taking office.
Asked if Clinton is frustrated with the administration's seeming inability to communicate those achievements with similar clarity, McAuliffe said: "He doesn't talk like that."
McAuliffe, an all-but-certain candidate for the Virginia governorship next year, was glad-handing and signing autographs in the streets of Charlotte, the site of this year's Democratic National Convention.
He said Clinton flew to Arkansas on Thursday morning.
He wrote a speech that was roughly 3400 words or so, but he delivered nearly twice that amount.
@Four and The Door
"Of course it would be awkward for Obama to talk about growing the economy after the results of everything he has tried so far. He would have to change something and this would require admitting that what he has done will not work."
I had to laugh to hear YOU talk about "admitting" something. The Republicans handed President Obama an economy on the brink of a deep depression – you've never manned-up to that fact. They planned to block all progress for recovery from the first day – the notes of the meeting are now public. Did you man-up to that reality? Romney has given us absolutely nothing regarding the specifics of his many promises – low taxes, no deficit, cheap gas, and great healthcare. Does that smell funny to you? Of course not. You even find fault in President Obama's absolutely magnificent handling of our military and international affairs – including killing the cr@p out of the terrorists. Bush was "Mr. Mission Accomplished". Did you admitt to that truth? Of course not. Everything you know comes from Fox News – and that says it all...
Probably President Clinton needed time to gather the facts before telling Americans the truth. In the opposite, the majority of GOP just spoke what popped up in their mind in which has only one thing: “make sure Obama is one-termed president’
He knows how to say it. I would love to have Clinton't ability to speak.
Accountability. Congress is in the way of any bi-partisan cooperation. Americans should fire the Republican Congress.
@Four and The Door – The speech was very disappointing in the diversions it took into misinformation and unfounded allegations about the Republican plans. Bubba does deliver a rousing speech and it was obvious the Democrats have been starving for someone to stand up and find positive things to say about the Obama Administration, like,"...They are Democrats so they will do better next time I promise.".
You have to give the right wing trolls credit for their continual and un-shaking belief that despite ALL THE FACTS, ALL OF THE TRUTH that is easily verifiable, the Republicans refuse to accept or even acknowledge their role in the mess we are in today. You "do the math".. ask Lying Ryan and Mitt the Twit how they plan to accomplish 12 millions jobs in their first term, pay for a 20% across the board tax cut without adding $1.5 TRILLION to the deficit, increase Defense spending and put the American middle class back to work.
They CAN'T TELL YOU – until after you vote for them - because the NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP !!! Trust us!
The only thing the Repugs can be trusted to do is LIE to the red state lemmings who swallow the swill, and take us BACK to BUSH III – the next gen of the Bush (43) the worst President in history whose administration perpetuated the problems we have!
Ever see Romney walk – short strides, no movement of the arms, quick head turns, smiles like he is saying "I'm Sorry"...the man portrays no authority whatsoever.
Can you imagine him staring down Putin – Romney would be eaten alive.
Contrast with Obama – long strides, full arm swing, no head turns, full toothy smile – the picture of confidence. In a war with Russia, this is the commander I would want.
Sorry GOP...but these things matter.
Well done Mr. President!!!!
