Romney ad follows up Clinton speech with a flashback

(CNN) – Bill Clinton's speech Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention was met with cheers from delegates and generally positive reviews from pundits, but Mitt Romney's campaign is using the prime-time address to remind voters of the former president's views on then-candidate Barack Obama in 2008.

"As the economy gets worse, Barack Obama calls on Bill Clinton to help his failing campaign," a narrator in the spot says before a clip is shown from an Obama campaign ad featuring Clinton.

"He's a good soldier-helping his party's president," the narrator continues. "But what did Bill Clinton say about Barack Obama in 2008?"

A clip rolls of Clinton saying "Give me a break. This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen."

The former president spoke those words at a campaign stop in New Hampshire during the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries. He was arguing that Obama got an easier time from the media than his wife, Hillary Clinton, who was Obama's top rival for the 2008 Democratic nomination.

Thursday's ad isn't the first time a Clinton has appeared in a Mitt Romney television advertisement. The Republican presidential nominee has released two spots featuring Hillary Clinton from her 2008 Democratic primary battle with the then-Illinois senator. The first ad, released at the end of June, uses video of Clinton campaigning against candidate Obama in Cincinnati ahead of the 2008 Ohio primary.

Clinton accused Obama of "blatantly false" attacks against her in campaign mailers, which Romney used to highlight one of Obama's 2012 ads, which was called "misleading, unfair and untrue" in a Washington Post fact check.

A second Romney spot featuring Hillary Clinton responded to an attack from Obama's campaign on Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney co-founded and ran in the 1990s.

The ad recycled a quote from Hillary Clinton in 2008, when Clinton fired off on Obama over her opponent's latest round of blows.

"Shame on you, Barack Obama," Clinton says in the clip.

The Romney campaign has not said in what states or markets the ad will air, but a Democratic ad buying source told CNN the spot will run between Friday and Monday.

Team Romney stayed off the air most of this past week while the Democrats held their convention. Preliminarily, the Romney campaign is spending in the range of $4.5-5 million for the buy but the amount could go up, the ad source said.

In the last month the Republican nominee spent roughly $7-8 million a week as part of its ad campaign.

Now that Romney has officially been named the GOP nominee, his campaign will get its hands on tens of millions of dollars that could only be tapped for the general election part of the campaign.

If people didn't buy into the bad things Clinton was saying about an obviously good man, why should they buy into it now?

Clinton completely OBLITERATED the GOP, its values, and economic strategy. There is no question whatsoever which party is the most intelligent and trustworthy in November.

They're trying hard, those Republicans. Gotta hand it to them. But don't they ever listen to "real" news programs or read "real" newspapers and magazines that have those pesky "real" facts in them?

Admit it, the Democrats hit it out the park last night. All the speakers were exceptional, but I was on my feet cheering in my living room when Ann Richard's daughter spoke about Planned Parenthood and women's issues. And it will only be better tonight when President Obama accepts the nomination for his second term, leading to his re-election in November.

What did Newt Gingrich, Michelle Backman, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, John Huntsman and Herman "999" Cain say about Romney? Remember? I do. The Obama campaign is surging and the Romney campaign is the flailing. "Shame on you Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan – for being bold faced liers." I said that!

Oh dear. Romney is really, really grasping at straws with this doozy of an ad. Nothing more than desperation, I suspect.

Hope Romney's people keep squandering their campaign dollars on these silly ads that just alienate voters and show how little Romney understands contenxt, values or even simple English. Romney and Ryan (hate to say this about a pro-life Irish Catholic) are a disgrace ... they even alienate the Pro-Life Lobby!

Didn't Santorum say that if Romney was the nominee that we might as well vote for Obama? Wasn't he a speaker at the convention?

Don't worry, mad commercials will be out here shortly. Can't wait for those with Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.

Ok, did anyone expect anything constructive from Romney? What campaign doesn't trash the other candidate when they are running against them? Romney needs to just look back a couple months when he was the one getting dumped on by his fellow GOP ers. I don't see them bad mouthing him now that they lost either.

President Obama is a sitting President and Republicans know he couldn't say what Former President Clinton said and Republicans have been using that against him. Republicans can't say Clinton was lying because it would take a fool to believe that knowing that Former President Bill Clinton wouldn't put his own legacy in jepardy based on lies. America thanks President Clinton for telling us the truth while Republicans continue to clothe themselves in lies putting their integrity and legacy in dire jepardy.

After weeks of back room deals to get Hillary elected in 2016 ... tonight, I watched the master snake oil salesman, Bill Clinton, sell ice boxes to a room full of liberal Eskimos. Sure the economy was bad when Obama took over in 2008, but Obama, not Bush, squandered 5 1/2 TRILLION of our hard earned dollars in just 3 1/2 years ... and, it was Obama, not Bush, who kept unemployment at over 8% for 42 straight months. Thanks to Obama, our current enconomy is NOW in shambles ... and, Obama wants to double down on his failed policies ... at OUR expense.
Save America ... Dump Obama ... and Elect Romney & Ryan in November !!!

I loved that video of Ted debating Mitt back in the day.......watching Mitt affirm how solidly he is pro-choice was a real hoot. Ted got it right when he said Mitt was "multiple–choice"........how many isuues has Mitt actually flip-flopped on to date? Anyone keeping track? The man has no core whatsoever.

But you still fail the one question Romney, How are you going to fix the problem. You didn't mention anything just playing the blame game. You stated that you will create 12 million new jobs, yeah because Congress will do anything to pass their agenda along. Independent agencies has said that by 2016 US will have created 9 million new jobs, so that not a reach. e wants to increase spending on the military, making them the strongest force. That was the same crap talk the Bush said back in Philly at the GOP convention back in 2000. Will all know how that ended and Romney will get a war with Iran, then tried to weasle his way playing on people's fear like Bush, Cheney and Karl Rove did in 2004.

Romney and Ryan are dangerous and pathetic liars

Ons thing is campaign rhetoric you twit. You should know as both your lackeys boys, newterman and sanatorium, told your land of flakes that you would be the worst president ever. In your case they were right and by you not showing us your taxes, abusing animals, bullying a gay student, dressing up as a state trooper, talking sbout the trees and their right height and where did the flood water come from (sky, river, ocean), how you were pro choice in 1994 and now yiu are against women's rights and how you were anti gun while MA governor and now you are not it makes me wonder why you keep up the lies and innuendos.
Could it be that your campaign is just a bunch of lies from two clowns who think they are worthy of being our president
and vp president not realizing that you are both lying cheats with no character, no ethics nor morals losers?

Normally VP Cheney would have said some thing by now and it's mighty strange that Romney has not called upon G.W. Bush to support his efforts. I guess both of them realize that it is best for them to keep their mouths closed because of the damage that they have done to this country.
