Ann Romney defers same-sex marriage, birth control questions to husband

(CNN) – Ann Romney adamantly stayed on message when asked in an interview with an Iowa television station about same-sex marriage and whether employer-provided health insurance should cover birth control, deferring questions on such issues to the GOP nominee.

Mrs. Romney told KWQC via satellite Friday morning that her message to voters was to trust Mitt Romney to bring the country a sound economic future. But when asked her views on contentious social issues Mrs. Romney firmly adhered to the GOP's economic message and declined to answer.

"I'm not going to talk about the specific issues. I'm going to let my husband speak on issues," said Mrs. Romney adding that such topics are a distraction from the focus of the election and what the Republican nominee's wife says women voters want to talk about-jobs and the economy.

When asked if she believes employer-provided health insurance should be required to cover birth control, Mrs. Romney said, "Again, you're asking me questions that are not about what this election is going to be about. This election is going to be about the economy and jobs."

Republican candidate's wife, a powerful and effective surrogate to her husband's presidential efforts, insisted that the campaign's message was focused on fixing the economy, period.

"So really if you want to try to pull me off of the other messages it's not going to work because I know because I've been out there," said Mrs. Romney.

Mitt the twit hiding behind Ann's skirt again. He's toast after our great President Obama stomped the unhinged GOBP tea potty into the dirt Thursday night.

Our economy is in a deep state of liberal economic malaise. Who gives a rat's rump about gay marriage?

Wow, so Ann is telling us what this election is about, and what we care about. No, Ann – we get to decide........and we're not just one issue voters. You shouldn't be Mitt's surrogate, if you can't answer simple questions.

told not to speak on such questions by her husband which is normal behavior in a conservative/religious household. told not to speak on such questions by husbands handlers ...who are also controlling men. I guess its good to be King and sucks to be queen. This behavior is why I cannot vote for left-over knuckle-dragging cave men who think hoarding pieces of paper means great success in life...onward and forward ...let THEM eat cake!

Doesn't she have a mind of her own, or is she a Stepford Mormon wife. Of course the economy is important, but since we are only one Supreme Court Justice away from overturning Roe v Wade and sending the country back to the stone age, social issues are also important. The economy will come around after the election. If Romney wins and does away with alll government controls there will be plenty of jobs unleashed from the 2 trillion dollar treasure trove that the major corporations are saving for just such a rainy day, so they can drill, drill, drill without repurcusions. So they can once again write bad mortgages without impunity, so they can fatten up even more their bank accounts with little or no taxes.
Changes in social issues will have a longer effect on the country than a short recession which is only effecting the
99% and not the rich anyway. Mrs. Romney should stay home (whichever mansion that is) and oversee the construction of her car elevator) and let her husband evade the questions that America wants answered by himself.

The economy is important but Ann so are social issues, when you husband defies the voices of women and gays he will pay the price.

Hey Republicams – if you get into office, will you tackle social issues? If so, be ready to answer some questions about them. If you say you will only deal with the economiy and not affect any social issues at all in office, then we can take social issues off the table. Otherwise, please answer the questions.
Or is this another issue of "if we keep talking about what we are going to do, we Republicans are going to lose?" ,

This is Ann Romney saying "We have given all you people need to know" about the toxic Republican policies.

She didnt have the balls to tell the American women voters that we will basically lose our rights if her husband wins. Clearly she doesn't care about womens rights. She should be ashamed.

"I'm not going to talk about the specific issues. I'm going to let my husband speak on issues."

It would be nice if he actually was willing to answer these questions with more than sound bites. It's also pretty presumptuous of her to think that women voters don't want to talk about birth control and other health-related issues. Of course, she doesn't have to worry about that because she can afford the best health care. Besides, it really shouldn't be up to her what she wants to talk about; she is talking to voters so the voters should be the ones who decide the topics that are discussed. If she doesn't have the courage to discuss them, she shouldn't be talking at all; let her just mail everyone her speech since she's decided that's all that anyone needs to hear.

Yeah powerful surrogate...she is so understanding of the average woman in the country. Do they say anything specific other than give our blind trust to Mitt with the economic future when his whole campaign is shady from his involvement with Bain to his hidden taxes. I haven't seen anything to trust. Mitt keeps changing his stance on issues and Ryan keeps spewing lies.

I would ask real journalists out there, what exactly is the point of interviewing someone who won't answer questions and will only give you her prepared talking points? That's not journalism.

Big deal -it isn't like she or her husband will have any say in anything anyways. Just add them to the cast of the "also rans".

Ann does not get to define the narrative or what we ask her. Its not just the economy, its social issues, its foreign policy – its whatever we say it is.

Ann Romney, you were asked about YOUR VIEWS, not your husbands – Why would you pass the way YOU FEEL to your husband??? And when your husband is asked, he passes HIS social views to YOU!! Give the American people a break!!

Ann started out being llikeable but now, she is becoming more unbelievable!!!

How can we forget the condition of the country four years ago? We were approaching one of the worst financial disasters since the Great Depression, and we're losing 750,000 jobs a month! How can we forget this? We have come so far. As it was brough up by Clinton in his speech, they (Republicans), caused a financial mess, now want to fire Obama because he didn't clean up their mistakes fast enough! This election highlights how dumb and malleable our electorate really is, otherwise this race would not be as close as it is. Listen carefully to what Romney and Ryan are saying--nothing! But we know what Republican policies will be, more of what caused the mess in the first place! Wake up America!
