Romney tells military-friendly crowd: ‘We’ll rebuild military might,’ keep God on U.S. currency

Virginia Beach, Virginia (CNN) – Mitt Romney revved up a Virginia Beach audience heavy on military families Saturday by pledging to “rebuild America’s military might” and keep the word “God” on U.S. currency.

“Our pledge says ‘under God,’” Romney told thousands of energetic supporters at the Military Aviation Museum. “I will not take God out of the name of our platform. I will not take God off our coins. And I will not take God out of my heart.”

Democrats took heat during their national convention after omitting a reference to God in the party’s platform. The word was hastily reinserted in the ensuing public outcry.

Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden said Romney was not referring to any push to remove “God” from U.S. currency, but said the candidate was referring “to an example of where a principle like ‘In God We Trust’ is already on public display.”

Romney also focused heavily on patriotism in his remarks to the flag-waving, cheering audience, framing his speech around the pledge of allegiance.

“For me, the pledge of allegiance and the placing our hands over our hearts reminds us of the blood that was shed by those fighting for our liberty,” Romney said to thunderous applause from the audience, many of whom raised their hands when asked whether they were veterans.

Romney - whose own convention speech provoked controversy when he failed to mention the conflict in Afghanistan - said Saturday American troops were “stretched to the breaking point” and offered full-throated support for the armed forces, “particularly those in Afghanistan who are in harm’s way.”

He then launched into a withering critique of President Barack Obama over congressionally-mandated military cuts, called sequestration, which could kick in next year.

“It’s unthinkable to Virginia, to our employment needs, but it’s also unthinkable to the ability and the commitment of America to maintain our liberty, with liberty for all,” Romney said of the cuts, which were part of a congressional deal to force lawmakers to take action on the national debt. “And therefore if I’m president of the United States we’ll get rid of those sequestration cuts and rebuild America’s military might.”

Before his speech, a campaign aide said Romney spoke with Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and controversial evangelist Pat Robertson.

Democrats seized on Romney’s speech and his appearance with Robertson, who did not speak at the event.

“It’s disappointing to se Mitt Romney try to throw a ‘Hail Mary’ by launching extreme and untrue attacks against the president and associating with some of the most strident and divisive voices in the Republican party,” Obama campaign spokesman Lis Smith said, who criticized Romney for being joined at the rally by evangelist Pat Robertson. “This isn’t a recipe for making America stronger, it’s a recipe for division and taking us backward.”

Nobody's threatening to take God off our currency, unless he and Ryan have been thinking about it. And our troops are better off now than they would be after you and Ryan cut benefits by 30% to all veterans. What a wuss. What a lying, cheating, deceitful wuss.

To which god are you referring? Your Kolob god? You who thinks that you will inherit a planet with your magic underwear?
If you really believed in god, you and the lying altar boy, you would stop the lies, the innuendos. I don't think anyboby's god will be too happy when you stand before him at the moment of death.

GOP: No new ideas. All that bitterness, anger and hatred. God, guns and tax cuts for wealthy are all they have left. No wonder African-Americans, Latinos, women, gays and lesbians, young adults, etc. are leaving grand old party in large numbers. I voted for Reagan and Bush's father but Obama is looking much better all the time. It is a shame that moderates and independents are no longer welcome due to their severe purity tests.

Hey twit, the President hasn't cut defense spending on the contrary.
For somebody who didn't once mention Afghanistan and whose lying boy toy and your excuse was that you spoke at length at a veteran's meeting you need to get on the same page.
You mentioned Afghanistan once in a sentence couple with WMDs. What? Did you think it was Iraq?

Then why was he referencing that???/ You see, Romney and his campaign knows exactly what they are doing – They tells lies repeatedly and hope that it will stick – Just like Paul LYAN telling a crowd about the GM closings; the $716 billion dollar steal from Medicare and even right down to his Marathon LIE – And Romney is NO DIFFERENT – he says things that the crowd he is in front of at the time wants to hear!!!

    WAKE UP AMERICA!!

Our pledge says under god? Really? Did it always say that or did some one with a religious stick up his but just add it along the way? There's NO WAY the founding fathers would have put that in a pledge OR on our currency.

Mitt needs to get as close to God as possible, because the only way he is going to win in November is through divine intervention.

He speaks of justice, how much justice is his top surrogate Bobby Jindal showing in LA concerning his lawsuit to stop the longest serving state supreme court justice, who is a black female, from ascending to the position of chief justice. According to LA law the longest serving judge gets appointed. Jindal is challenging the appointment and does not wish the fed to get involved. Just like the Jim Crow days, using the states rights argument to justify discrimination.

God and war are a direct confict. How can you be pro-life and pro-war and pro-death penality...all those are a direct conflict. Mechanical cleverness will never save us.

I'd like to know how the military has been weakened over the course of Obama's administration. How was that done? I would one specific that had no Congressional involvement. As for changing the currency, when has Obama ever mentioned that?

I got news for you Mitt. You took God out of your heart as soon as you chose Paul Ryan to be your running mate and praised his inhuman and cruel budget as "marvelous." Where in the Bible did Jesus Christ not tell us to love one another and take care of one another?

So Romney is proposing to GROW govenment and create government jobs and those fools were sitting there clapping like they had no understanding of that what he was talking about meant growing the government, something Republicans are supposed to hate. That's the only plan he has, cut taxes and grow government. Proves they are not really interested in reducing the debt. They just hate the President.

It's time to get God out of politics. God belongs in the church, temple, mosque, etc., not in politics. People came to this country to escape from religious persecution and dogma. Why do we have to put up with other peoples' religious beliefs now? Religion should be a totally private matter, a family matter, not a political matter. No wonder this country is going down the tubes.

    all I know is :
the republicans had mass control of congress from 1997-2007 and did not even attempt to fix SS, Medicare, tax systems. How do you have control for 10 years and get nothing done. At least Hillary & Obama tried, one didn't succeed the other did.. What kind of leaders are the republicans? The republicans passed the NCLB mandate without even asking the states. And look at the number of states trying to get waivers. An expensive failed republican mandate.

You really think the GOP house will allow Romney to do anything regarding health care other than repeals it? The GOP house has already publically stated they will take their sweet old time to come up with a replacement IF THEY COME UP WITH ANYTHING. Boehner already stated this as much.

What I want to know is what/how Romney is going to guarantee that the banks/hedge funds never cause another meltdown like in 2007/2008? If that happens again it'll destroy the economy this time vs just putting us into a major recession. What's he going to do? If all out savings are in the bank or invested in 401K/IRAs and our SS is sitting in some mutual fund, we cannot afford another financial crisis. The 1% can handle it, we cannot. If I want to vote for R&R, I want to know what THEY WILL DO. The democrats want to try to restrict the thieves/gamblers from doing it (the Dodd-Frank bill). At least the democrats are trying, what are the republicans doing?

With a voucher program, there is no medicare. The government will issue a voucher to people to help (loose term here) people pay for premiums. It does nothing to say that people can find affordable health insurance. It says nothing about insurances accepting people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think you will have by the time you do get to 65? More than likely you will have some sort of pre-existing conditions. And last but not least, the voucher does nothing to reduce the actual cost of health care services.

Remember it was House Republican Majority Eric Cantor that purposely changed the Stock Act (the one about inside trader knowledge) so politicians can still make trades on insider knowledge (just via family members). It was in the original bill, he changed it. Congress had to vote twice to get it done right!!! Who's looking out for whom???

Note Ryan plagiarized the health care cuts from Obama's ACA committee. Romney plagiarized the 12million job creation number from Moody's analysts. Neither giving credit to their sources. Also, Romney will take credit of the 12million jobs that Moody’s analysts have already stated that will occur regardless which person is in the WH.

And all of this not even discussing like women’s rights, etc.

R/R are not they solution they are part of the problem

When did we lose our military might? Does Romney even know that we have the world's most powerful military? Sounds more like Romney does not have faith in our military.

I'm a military wife, mother of a Marine veteran of Iraq and mother-in-law of an active duty airman.
I would never, never want to see this man as commander-in-chief. He's made it plain that he wants this country involved in another war. He only sees it as profits for himself and the corporations that support him.
He has no idea what it is like to see a spouse or a child deploying to a war zone. He was a coward who bugged out to France, using his phony religion as an excuse to avoid serving his country. He has five capable sons, but none of them have served, either.
On the other hand, our President has proven to be a strong leader. He has taken out Bin Ladin and has kept his promises to draw down from the Bush wars and to take care of veterans and military families.
The first and second ladies are my heroes for the things that they have done for military families.
The Bidens have "skin in the game" with a son who has proudly served.
It is easy for me to see which party really supports the military families.
