Romney: 'Can't imagine saying no' to Netanyahu meeting

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney focused campaign efforts Wednesday on putting a dent in President Barack Obama's foreign policy, including invoking reports that the administration refused a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Romney said at a campaign event that as president, he "can't imagine ever saying no" to a meeting with the Israeli leader.

Romney's remarks on Israel came after the GOP candidate's continued hammering of the administration's response to attacks on two United States' diplomatic posts in Egypt and Libya, killing four in the U.S. offices in Benghazi.

Romney's team altered a campaign event in Jacksonville, Florida, Wednesday to deliver remarks on the attacks, offering condolences to the affected families and, notably, handing more pointed criticism to Obama for what the Republican candidate said was sympathy for the attackers.

While greeting supporters after the scheduled event, Romney was also asked about his views on Israel.

Romney reiterated both his support for the U.S. ally and his attacks on the president's foreign policy, saying, "I can't ever imagine if the prime minister of Israel asked to meet with me, I can't imagine ever saying no. They're our friends. They're our closest allies in the Middle East."

The Obama administration has pushed back on reports that the White House turned down requests for a meeting from Netanyahu to discuss, in person, threats to Israel by Iran's nuclear program, releasing a statement Tuesday saying there was no such request and no meeting was denied.

Netanyahu is scheduled to be in New York later this month. The White House statement did not say whether a request to meet in New York was either made or denied.

Of course Romney couldn't refuse – his fat cat donor Sheldon Adelson wouldn't let him. SA's main loyalty is to Israel, not the U.S.

He can't imagine it, because he can't even begin to imagine what it means to be President, and hasn't got the chops for the job. Not enough education, not enough foreign policy experience, no class, and no brains.

Bottom line, it was Democrats who removed Jerusalem from the Democratic platform and the vote to reinstated was not there even after 3 votes but it was put back in because Democrats feared the outcome. So Democrats are just being hypocrites when it comes to Israel.

    From The Jerusalem Post

“Mr. Prime Minister, tell me, who is our biggest enemy, the US or Iran? Who do you want replaced, [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad or [US President Barack] Obama?”

its amazing! A man who never served in the military, his sons never served in the military. In fact, there is a long line of coward Romneys who never served. Yet, he can bristle up and talk so tough. He already has Iran in his crosshairs and needless war on a hair trigger. Another rich elitist willing to send our sons and daughters to war, but not himself or his kids.

Interesting that you Democrat whiners don't mind Obama literally bowing to the Arabs, but if it's Mitt Romney reaffirming his friendship with Netanyahu (whom he knows from Harvard), then it is viewed as bending over for Israel.

    B.

Romney is such a national embarrassment now and getting worse as it gets close to the end. He is grasping at straws with no coherent stance on anything as he has spent any credibility he ever had before.

The man is over his head and he is beginning to panic. The GOP have screwed themselves by choosing him and will have to completely reinvent the Republican party after this debacle is over in November.

    B,
I totally concurr with you. The GOP is looking more like a much war-hunger fools everyday. Their only real chance is Jon Huntsman, and I will be watching for him in 2016. Huntsman is both civil and statesman like, and understands the concept of serving the American people. In fact, he should run as an independent.

I believe Republicans leverage Israel as political fodder to paint themselves as more religious and to connect with Christians. The lengths they go to to please Israel is insulting to American sovereignty. Democrats are guilty of this too. You can be a friend/ally to a country without being its puppet (or female dog).

Obama is first real president in my lifetime to actually stand up to them. I thought he was a real leader when he told them to stop building settlements – even when Israel said they'd stop – bc it was hindering the peace process. I just hope Obama doesn't back down now and meet with him – show some backbone this time.

I think Israel will get us into trouble someday. They will launch an attack on Iran; chances are we'll have a republican in office will blindly assist and send in troops. Russia/China will probably side with Iran – as they do today – and really put us into a bind.

Wow what a surprise. You mean Mitt Romney can't wait to play CHUMP to his old colleague from the Bain Consulting Group? The danger here is that Mitt is such a nieve chump when it comes to foreign policy that he's likely to pull another Bush Jr and get us into a was with Iran while he follows this super Conservative Right-Wing Israeli down the toilet of the middle east. American Jews would do well to stay away for this one. Both these guys are bad news for America.

President Obama did the right thing by letting the Israeli Priminister know that American will not be forced into yet another WAR. If the want to attack Iran, they need to discuss it before just doing so without disussin reprecussions of what they would be involved.

I don't like the current state of the GOP, and can't support them. i have in the past supported and voted for plenty in the RNC but I can't view this like its a football game. Romney is not ready for prime time and a lot of you guys on the right know it, Do the country a favor and regroup with a better candidate in 2016 you guys had plenty try out in the convention. 2016 looks good but trust me Romney is not ready for prime time by any means

With the exception of a couple of bloggers, there sure are a bunch of hateful morons posting today. Did any of you even read that there is new evidence about Iran’s nuclear ambitions? I don't know what that evidence says (because it’s classified) but Netanyahu requested this meeting after its release. Did you ever think that it might say something important? When was the last time any of you ever heard of a head of state requesting an unscheduled conference with the POTUS? Remember Israel is the country within missile range of Iran, not the U.S.

if you were a true presidential material, governor, or even just an ordinary American, you would be able to not only imagine but actually say no to anyone, period.
