Romney to receive intel briefings starting next week

Sterling, Virginia (CNN) - After Mitt Romney was knocked back on his heels for commenting on the diplomatic attacks in the Middle East before all of the facts were in, advisers to the GOP nominee said he has yet to receive national security briefings from the Obama administration.

But those briefings will begin next week, a campaign spokesperson told CNN on Thursday.

"For the last several weeks, the Romney campaign has been in touch with the intelligence community to arrange intelligence briefings for Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan, consistent with tradition," the spokesperson, who declined to be named, told CNN. "They will begin next week and, beyond that, we will have no further comment."

It is customary in the latter stages of a general election campaign for presidential challengers to get these vital intelligence updates, regardless of which party is in power.

A top Romney foreign policy adviser acknowledged on Wednesday the death of a U.S. ambassador in Libya was not yet known to the campaign when it issued a statement that sharply criticized the president's handling of the crisis.

The initial statement released by the Romney campaign late Tuesday night did, however, note the death of an "American consulate worker."

A senior Romney strategist told CNN Thursday the campaign is confident the controversy sparked by the Republican contender's comments would blow over in time.

The strategist said Romney's criticism highlighted the "big differences" in the race.

Not having access to security briefings is no excuse for the unacceptable and very un-Presedential comments made by Romney and some others in his party for political gain.

Their Campaign states that when Romney made his initial comments, he did not know that someone had died, yet his release mentions the loss of life. Unbelievable!!

He did not ask for the briefings *eyeroll*

Not that he should be allowed anyway even if he did ask. Only.POTUS or president-elect should qualify.

Marie MD – It's custom. The opposing party's nominee gets given national Security Briefing (saves them days upon days of filling this scmoe in if he does get the job)...

After what he said, though, and the fact it looks like they haven't asked yet, I'd say it isn't a good idea...

Too bad Romney didn't think to ask yesterday, *before* opening his big fat mouth. That would have shown that there was at least some hope that he was ready to be the President of *all* Americans and the leader of the free world, not just the mouthpiece of the billionaires and the wing-nut Right. I'm voting for Obama, but it's always nice to have two reasonable candidates just in case 51% of the country doesn't agree with me. Right now I wouldn't trust Romney to fairly resolve a fight between two 10 year-olds, forget making in through the current Middle East quagmire without setting someone, or multiple someones, off. Mitt should buy some diplomacy from China as long as he's shipping them our business, and our jobs.

"Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, but why should this private citizen pretending he wants to be president get any briefings on national security or how many times members of congress go potty?
    He is NOT anybody!!!"

Now now...you have to be objective. Candidates for POTUS actually DO get dumbed down national security briefings to prepare them shoudl they win. Obama got his first one sometime around September 4, 2008. THAT is not th estory nor the issue though. The story and the issue is WHY Mittens is not getting his...and it's because he hasn't asked for it like he's supposed to, not because he's being screwed. This is nothing but a smoke screen by Mittens, an attempt to deflect from his disasterous commentary this week and to make it look like it's not his fault that he's behaving like a foreign policy neophyte, when the reality is that it's his own fault that he hasn't obtained the security briefings. THAT is the issue and, if true, is asctually further evidence that Mittens is clueless on national security and foreign policy.

Our commander in chief blows off Israel, tells the world that Egypt is not an ally(even though the State Department says they are), is slow to condemn the recent attacks, and initially was trying to put blame on a film for causing the violence and later tries to back track.
To top it off, he has the audacity to chastise Romney for playing politics during a time our country is under attack (even though Romney was spot on) , and then hops on Airforce One to campaign in Las Vegas and Colorado. And CNN just eats it up. Stop being Obama cheerleaders CNN and start putting out objective non biased journalism.

The Republicans have really lost their everlasting loving minds. The hatred in their hearts is unbelievable all because we have a black president. The true Americans must stick together and make sure that they go far away for good. With a party like the GOP who needs enemies.

Romney sadly revealed he is not trustworthy on significant issues:
Tax returns, welfare, flip-flops, loopholes, national security, etc. Especially in volatile situations.

@Watching Obama and his Sheeple sweat is FUN!

To see and hear you folks sweat this election out is quite entertaining. Did you think the mistake of luck having a man named Barrack Hussein Obama would last more than 1 4 year term by any means? This country has come too far and has too much to risk for an amature like Obama. 3 Things : the economy, the jobs and the final nail in Obama's coffin the Arab spring fallback (Obama's baby). This election will go to Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and you "folks" better get that through your heads starting now. We dont want any race riots either, but if your feeling frisky we love our guns.........and our God too:). You freaks, degenerates have had enough fun ruining every moral and these United States. Time to step off.

Does anybody really comprehend the serious matter at hand , so instead of resorting to the same old drivel against Romney start looking at the President how he is handling this crisis.
Oh yes , he went to Las Vegas for a fundraiser while this horrific event was unfolding , that is absolutely shameful.
This was a very well executed attack on an American consulate to coincide with 9/11 , it was far to well planned for just a demonstration having gone bad.
America has a weak President and incompetent administration.
