Romney to receive intel briefings starting next week

Sterling, Virginia (CNN) - After Mitt Romney was knocked back on his heels for commenting on the diplomatic attacks in the Middle East before all of the facts were in, advisers to the GOP nominee said he has yet to receive national security briefings from the Obama administration.

But those briefings will begin next week, a campaign spokesperson told CNN on Thursday.

"For the last several weeks, the Romney campaign has been in touch with the intelligence community to arrange intelligence briefings for Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan, consistent with tradition," the spokesperson, who declined to be named, told CNN. "They will begin next week and, beyond that, we will have no further comment."

It is customary in the latter stages of a general election campaign for presidential challengers to get these vital intelligence updates, regardless of which party is in power.

A top Romney foreign policy adviser acknowledged on Wednesday the death of a U.S. ambassador in Libya was not yet known to the campaign when it issued a statement that sharply criticized the president's handling of the crisis.

The initial statement released by the Romney campaign late Tuesday night did, however, note the death of an "American consulate worker."

A senior Romney strategist told CNN Thursday the campaign is confident the controversy sparked by the Republican contender's comments would blow over in time.

The strategist said Romney's criticism highlighted the "big differences" in the race.

And lack of direct knowledge or briefings DID NOT keep this piehole form talking out of his piehole possibly risking antagonizing the perpetrators into committing more mayhem, and loss of life.
Nope. No information. No problem for Romney. Too busy trying to score political points off of the backs of dead Americans.
    Shameful and disgusting.

    @independent.

So what is your comment regarding how Obama handled the emergency? I guess escaping to Las Vegas, Lashing out his opponent, mum at what his plan is, gave a bloodless speech at Rose Garden are the way to handle the chaos? He should have canceled the event in Nevada and stay in the White House.

OMG! This GUY!!!!!!!!!!! SO, they are expecting Obama to CALL him in to brief him? This is the level of ignorance that is so unmistakable in the romney campaign. Now the White House says, uh, guys, we dont come to you, YOU COME TO US, and the romeny camp is like, uhhh, we knew that... NO COMMENT! I can not for the life of me see how a sane person could think romney is fit to run this country! He is a TOOL!

What would he do with the briefings? If the Romney campaign wants briefings in order to know what's really going on, maybe they can start with briefing Romney that he needs to release 10+ years of his tax returns!

Souptwins: The reason its such a blunder was that Romney said the President apologized and sympathsized with the protestors, when it was obvious that Obama did not. He said Obama apologized for America and used it as his "Obama is weak" on foreign relations. It's a bit of projection in my opinion since he knows his foreign affairs experiance is preety pathetic

@cry babies- NOBODY is back peddling on the Presidents comments regarding Egypt! IN FACT even the right is coming out and sayin to stop funds to them. The new president in Egypt assumed, WRONGLY, that it didnt matter who was in charge there, we would just keep supporting them. WRONG!!!! Mr. President Obama made that clear today, and the WHOLE WORLD agrees! YOU ARE WRONG!

"Does anyone actually expect the Obama administration to observe normal procedure and have security briefings sent to the candidate that they have pledged to "kill" by character assasination and slander?"

    1. Briefings aren't sent ... Romney has to appear in person.

    2. The candidate himself has to submit a secrity clearance request.

As it is Romney has been on vacation since his RNC speech. Maybe this will wake him up enough to realize running the country IS (to quote Joe Biden) a big f-ing deal.

Even more reason why he should of not said anything. He had no information or details about what was going on in the middle east other then what he heard thru media. Keep your mouth shut. We all ready have a President and his name Baraka Obama

Been on a work vacation for 10 days.....come back and check the CNN blogs and same old BS from the same old names, 90 % of which are liberals supporting Obama. My question is, do any of you people have jobs? By statistics, 8.2% have an excuse Its no wonder you people are supporting him.

Crybabies: I would be too if after hearing Morsey (sorry if I am spelling his name wrong) comments. Morsey did not condem the attacks on the US embassy on his soil and has called for the persecution of the person who made the film and called on us to do it like we are a dictatorship that doesn't allow the freedom of speech. Was that film right? No, but it is freedome of speech and he should not be prosecuted. Egypt is starting to make demands of us and trying to get us to back down...I suggest we let them know we have the money and w/o it, their country get's a whole lot poorer

    @Forget it
You liberal! Have you heard that the State department has to correct Obama to say that Egypt is an ally? Wow, he does not know? Perhaps he did not get the briefing neither.

Why you liberals are so fired up when Romney criticized the president? Where is the freedom of speech? Does Romney loose his first amendment right just because he is a presidential candidate?

Wait until Obama runs to country to the ground if he was to be re-elected again!!! Don't cry if you loose your job!!!

Obviously you didn't listen to what the President said ..
As for Romney and Ryan attending national security briefings.
An administration official told CNN it is up to the Romney campaign to ask for the briefings. It's unclear whether the request has been made. Romney advisers declined to comment any further on the matter.

Frankly , Romney has so little control over his campaign staff , I'm not sure if it would be wise to give then such info , other then daily briefings .

It is also customary for presidential candidates to release the last 12 years of tax returns.

And how do you know he hasn't asked for them? I seriously doubt you were there to confirm one way or another

Please read the article where it states:
"An administration official told CNN it is up to the Romney campaign to ask for the briefings. It's unclear whether the request has been made. Romney advisers declined to comment any further on the matter".

Do you think that if they HAD asked for the briefings the "Romney advisers [woudl've] declined to comment any further on the matter"? Do you? Yeah, me neither. They'd be swinging from the chadeliers accusing Obama of purposefully withholding information that they'd requested from their worthless candidate. That's how you guys operate.

  17. Really?

    @ A Kickin` Donkey
Mr. Romney, we REQUIRE 10 years worth of state & federal Income tax returns, as well as statement frrom those secretive, off-shore bank accounts before you job application can be considered.
    ----------
    Trying to change the requirements?
Okay, let's see Obama's records that he paid over $1 million to keep sealed. BTW, where did the "poor" boy get the money for that?!
Good for Romney if he used the LEGAL loopholes and offshore accounts for HIS money. More for him to give to charity which is what he does. He walks his talk unlike the community organizer who is on the take. Everything Romney has done with his $$ is legal and liberals just can't handle it so they promote lies.

@ Watching Obama and his Sheeple sweat is FUN – Not as much fun as watching the republican clowns crawl all over each other to try and do damage control because of Romney's mouth.

And – just so you know – President Obama WILL be re-elected for another term. Your anger shows that you are truly running scared but let me assure you, Mitt Romney lost the election yesterday.

As for your statement about "our guns.........and our God" – so not worried about it!! The God I know is a God of peace, compassion and love. You are probably some grown man sitting in his parent's basement wishing he had a life. Grow up!

Romney, stupid or naive. May be both.

Riot in Lybia, Egypt are real life crisis. How he opened his mouth without any fact really S T U P I D.

Not even Reagan Republican can save Romney.

In crisis reveals a person's true character. Well, without a doubt, we now know Romney is stupid, not fit to be president. I won't even want him to work in my business. Plain stupid.

Jim, I want to hear facts and news. Another slobbering Obama lover. Romney was not in fact knocked back on his heels. another reporting blunder. He simply made a statement about Obamas first resonse was an opoligy. 4 people were killed 2 americans and i really dont know about the other 2. This is failed leadership agaain.. Then the White house comes out with a second statement. that was tougher, So what message did this country give to the killers.? Sorry never mind i think you are bad. Really just look at the facts facts. On a separate topic I wish americans were more educated about what caused the ression. If you think it was all Bush you are stoned. I have worked in the housing industey fotr 30 years, 28 million bad loans 1/2 of the loans in the us were low quality subprime loans. Ideological bias in favor of low income lending led the government sinse the carter administration until 2008 to promote subprime loans, This is what caused the mortage meltdown and global financial crises. Simple the liberals are hiding behind a curtain and pointing at bush. Looks like it is working because most of the amercian population is to lazy to check the facts. They just listen to the one sided news that is protecting Obama. Where are the war protesters that used to be on the news every night. Maybe the liberals cut there pay.

That part of this process allowing a camp Romney to have access of important briefings, really frightened me.. Romney is bi-polar and the entire party. Romney is already paling around with the other foreign leader who is trying to strong arm President Obama. Romney is already giving information to the other side. Who would feel comfortable with Romney and Paul Ryan with this vital information. Romney andRyan are all IDOTS. PLEASE ALL VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA AND DEMS TO GET CONTROL SO AMERICA CAN GET STABILITY TO THE MIDDLE CLASS.
