(CNN) - Sen. Jim DeMint made an apparent joke Friday on the tense labor dispute in Chicago's public school system, using a harsh word to describe those on strike.
"You know, we have had a lot of bad news this week. On my way over, I was reading another story about a distant place where thugs had put 400,000 children out in the streets. And then I realized that was a story about the Chicago teachers strike," DeMint said, prompting laughter from the crowd at the Values Voter Summit, a social-conservative event in Washington, D.C.

(CNN) – The independent Karl Rove-backed conservative group Crossroads GPS pushed back on Democrats' claim that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney would raise taxes on the middle class launching ads in six battleground states Friday to counter the president's campaign ads in swing states.
The conservative group said its $5.3 million ad buy responds to the Obama campaign's criticism that Romney's tax plan hurts middle and low-income Americans. The Crossroads spot will begin airing on broadcast TV stations and cable networks Friday for one week in the swing states of Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Washington (CNN) - The District of Columbia received more representation in the halls of Congress this week. Only problem: this representative is bronze, not breathing and honors someone dead for over 100 years.
Legislation passed this week by both the House (by voice vote) and the Senate (by unanimous consent) will allow the District of Columbia to submit the statue of Fredrick Douglass, a notable abolitionist and resident of Washington, D.C., to "a suitable location in the Capitol."

(CNN) - A top foreign policy adviser to Mitt Romney's campaign stood by his argument Friday that this week's attacks on diplomatic posts in Libya and Egypt could have been averted if Romney were president.
Richard Williamson, a former assistant secretary of state under the Ronald Reagan administration, said Romney's policies would have led to better standing for the United States among countries that saw uprisings in the last couple years.

Washington (CNN) - Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan will unleash a fierce attack on President Obama's foreign policy Friday in a speech to the Values Voter Summit in Washington, according to excerpts of his speech provided by Mitt Romney's campaign.

(CNN) - With less than three weeks before the first presidential debate, Mitt Romney says he already knows what his biggest hurdle will be in his three October showdowns with President Barack Obama.
"I think the challenge that I'll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall I say it, to say things that aren't true," Romney said in an interview that aired Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

New York (CNNMoney) - The housing market is gaining strength thanks in part to government programs aimed at helping struggling homeowners, the latest Obama Administration Housing Scorecard released Thursday found.
"The Obama Administration's efforts to speed housing recovery are showing clear signs of traction," said Erika Poethig, Acting Assistant Secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) which releases the report in conjunction with the Department of the Treasury.
