Pelosi says Ryan pick makes it easier for Dems to take House

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's pick of Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate will give Democrats a better shot at retaking control of the House of Representatives, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader, said in an interview airing Sunday.

Pelosi, a Democrat, said Ryan's plan to overhaul Medicare was a nonstarter among senior citizens, meaning Democrats are better poised to assume the majority in the lower chamber.

"On August 11, when Gov. Romney chose Ryan, that was the pivotal day," Pelosi told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley on "State of the Union." "That is the day things really changed. We were on a path. I would have said to you then we were dead even. Well, the momentum is very much with us, the Medicare issue in this campaign."

Ryan, who chairs the House Budget Committee, has proposed a plan that would allow private insurers to compete with traditional Medicare on an exchange. Democrats, who label the proposal a "voucher system," claim the plan would effectively end Medicare. Republicans say such steps are necessary to ensure the health care program for senior citizens remains solvent. They also point out that Ryan's proposed measures wouldn't affect current Medicare recipients.

On Sunday, Pelosi said the issue was at the forefront of voters' minds and that her party retained the upper hand.

"We have been saying there are three important issues in this campaign. And in alphabetical order, they are Medicare, Medicare, Medicare," the California representative said.

A CNN/ORC poll taken earlier this month indicated Medicare was among the top three most important economic issues for voters, after unemployment and the federal deficit. And a New York Times survey last week showed a significant majority of voters wanted Medicare to remain unchanged, rather than shift to a system like the one Ryan has proposed.

Following his choice of Ryan as running mate, Romney has used Medicare often in his campaign speeches, claiming President Barack Obama took money reserved for Medicare to pay for his sweeping health care law (a claim that has been rated "false" by several fact checkers). While Romney hasn't said which specific elements of Ryan's budget plan he would support as president, he has indicated that many of Ryan's measures would play a part in his own White House budget proposals.

The push by Pelosi and fellow Democrats to win back the House comes after the party lost control of the chamber in the 2010 midterm elections. In order to regain a majority, Democrats are aggressively trying to pick up 25 seats in November's election.

Pelosi said Sunday that without a Democratic majority in the House, legislative gridlock would persist on Capitol Hill, even if Obama is re-elected.

"You'll see more of the same, because it's really important for the public to know that the Republican obstruction of President Obama's jobs bills, and whatever he was advancing, their obstruction is their agenda. They really don't believe in a public role," Pelosi said.

A second-term president, Pelosi said, wouldn't change the legislative dynamic if Republicans remain in the majority. And a Mitt Romney presidency, the minority leader indicated, was unthinkable.

"Mitt Romney is not going to be president of the United States," she said.

I told this long time ago–Paul Ryan pick denotes how Mitt Romney got to be an idiot. Worst than Sarah Palin as McCain told. True. Landslide victory for dems. Obama12.

Nancy Pelosi is a good reason, the Repubs took control of the house and will continue to retain control. She's a walking hypocrisy, not the sharpest tool to shed and a fraud. She needs to GO!

Worse than Palin? LOL...nobody is worse than Palin, but with that said...Ryan has more experience than Obama too or to 2008, which from a resume perspective, Obama was a on par with Palin...not talking intellectually, but experience.

While I despise Pelosi....the Ryan pick was a total killer for Mittens. He is a so-called "fiscal hawk" that voted for every Budget Busting Bush Boondoogle out there. Plus he has been caught in his own lies so often that he now has zero credibility outside of his own far right wing base.

It is just wishful thinking on Pelosi's part. Majority of American citizen are not safer or better off ten they were 4 years ago. The Democrats are becoming too extreme in their actions on the hill, Obamas and the Democratic policies have made a bad situation, worse. It is time for a complete change in the oval office and in the do nothing Senate.

I love her comment that "gridlock" is caused by a Rebublican controlled House. She clearly forgets that our constitution provides checks and balances, essentially requiring debate and compromise. The fact that she lacks the skills sets of a true statesman (person) isn't the fault of the Republicans....frankly, it's their responsibiliy to act as an opposition party, just as it is if a Republican control the WH.

What we lack in Washington is respect for one another, extreme party hacks from BOTH SIDES creating gridlock.

Yes, I am a registered Independent and sick of stupid politicians making stupid comments that it's the "other sides fault". What did Pelosi or another Partisan Hack do to negotiate a solution? NOTHING.

"we have to pass it, before we can know what's in it" – N. Pelosi

She did predict that Newt is not going to be a president of the USA in this election, and she is correct. Will her prediction on Romney's chance of becoming president come true?

To reelect President Obama is the first very important step.
But we have to go much further and stop this GOP/TP Madness! It is EVERY voter’s responsibility to stand up and be counted to say if they support lying and obstructing on every topic the GOP/TP touches in order to sell America to the highest bidder or if they are for a civilized search to solve the problems we all face in our beloved county! One thing is for sure – there is NO way to go forward with the party of “NO, H E L L NO!” They have overstayed their welcome!
President Obama and a strait Dem ticket 2012!!!

The reason the Democrates will take back the house is because the Republicans lied when they got it. They lied and got back in office by telling everyone they were going to create jobs. Where are the jobs? Their main objective is to make President Obama a one term President. So they blocked everything the President wanted to get done. They kept the promise to Grover Norquist but not to the people who voted them in. Grover Norquist did not help them get that, but he sure is helping them get fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you believe in the American way of governing....checks and balance,compromise,debate....the only way to vote is for candidates that are open minded !!! Now figure out who comes closest to that and we the people will get OUR government back.

Ryan was an awful pick for the Republicans. His stance on the stimulus, screaming against it while behind the scenes asking for money, screaming against the $716 billion cut to medicare while he employs the same scheme in his proposal, turning medicare into a voucher, lying about his marathon (which is the least of the problem), etc. etc. He is not good for the ticket. Not sure the Democrats will be able to get 24 or 25 seats they need, but if they get close, at least that will send a message to the Republicans to negotiate in the future. At least that's my hope...

Why is Pelosi getting all this media time? Is she even relevant anymore? Please let me know if she will be the choice for Speaker of the House again so that I know to vote against it, there are WAY other more qualified candidates from the Dem Party than her or S. Hoyer(D-MD).

Ryan was a terrible choice not unlike Palin, which verifies the judgement of the Republican thought process.

Ryan has now proven that he will lie to the face of Americans and has no moral integrity.
Both he and Romney will say anything to win the base of the right wing in an attempt to win this election.

Neither are primetime material and have no place in positions of high responsibility.

The Dems most likely won't regain control of the House until the 2014 elections, but the Romney/Ryan combo should cost the GOP at least 6 seats they otherwise would have won.
