Obama to appear on Kansas ballot after 'birther' challenge dropped

(CNN) – Efforts to keep President Barack Obama's name off of the Kansas presidential ballot were halted Monday when a state board ended its probe over questions about the president's place of birth, the Kansas Secretary of State's office confirmed.

The all-Republican board made its decision after the person leading the objection, Manhattan, Kansas resident Joe Montgomery, dropped his challenge on Friday saying he had received threatening phone calls.

Last year, Obama released his long-form birth certificate from Hawaii to quell speculation that he was not a U.S. citizen and may be constitutionally ineligible to serve as president. He has previously released a certification of live birth during the 2008 campaign. Both documents show that he was born in a Hawaii hospital on August 4, 1961. Contemporaneously published newspaper announcements also noted the birth in the Aloha State.

Monday's meeting by the State Objections Board, however, did not go down without some drama. Orly Taitz, an outspoken figure in the so-called birther movement, appeared at the gathering and demanded to speak, according to local television station KTKA, a CNN affiliate. She chided board members for overlooking other questions about the president's citizenship.

Obama supporters forcefully responded at the meeting, and both parties were ordered to leave the building by a security officer. It's also worth noting that Kansas Secretary of State, Kris Kobach, is known for his tough stance against illegal immigration and has served as an "informal adviser" to Mitt Romney's campaign.

The Kansas ballot measure is one of several examples of the birther movement's still-persistent presence this election year. Officials in Iowa and Arizona, for example, called for presidential candidates to show proof of U.S. citizenship before they can appear on the ballot–a not-so-veiled nod to birther conspiracists.

While the Republican Party at large brushes off the movement as a distraction, and despite proof to the contrary, some continue to give voice to the issue, notably real estate mogul Donald Trump. Romney, meanwhile, drew criticism recently for making an apparent quip about the issue.

"Ann was born at Henry Ford hospital, I was born at Harper hospital. No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised," Romney said at a Michigan campaign event.

Obama's campaign quickly seized on the comment and faulted Romney for not "standing up to the most strident voices in his party."

The president, however, pokes fun at the issue himself. Campaigning in Florida recently, Obama ran into a six-year-old from Hawaii and jokingly asked to see his birth certificate.

I have never questioned his place of birth because it is irrelevant. The fact that he attended school in Indonesia where only citizens are allowed to attend and no dual citizenship is recognized means he can't be a citizen of the US. If he was born in Hawaii, his father would have had to denounce his US citizenship to then obtain Indonesian citizenship to attend school there. He also applied for college tuition as a foreign student as well, but won't release those documents. To me, these are the relevant questions.

Even if all of that stuff were true, Obama would still be eligible to be POTUS. Read the Constitution.

    1. You must be a natural born citizen of the US.
    2. You must be at least 35 years of age.
    3. You must have been a US citizen for the past 14 years.

Barack Obama attended Columbia more than 25 years ago. It doesn't matter even if he did apply as a foreign student. He's been a US citizen for the past 20 years. Have a nice day, but you've been bamboozled.

On the same day that Mr. Romney's unfortunate remarks are released we heard about the "birther" question in Kansas and the attempt to keep Mr. Obama off the ballot in Kansas. Mr. Romney learly denigrates the so-called 47% and believes that they do not pay their way. Just because a person does not have to pay income taxes does not mean that they never pay anything. There are many different taxes which people pay every day. Just look at the sales tax.

The accusation that people want everything handed to them is not only elitist but nasty. It shows how little lMr. Romney knows about his fellow citizens. Those who enlist int he armed forces may not be tax payers and yes we do supply everything for them However, they are giving us far more every time they are deployed in the world. Many clergy, social workers, teachers, policemen, firemen, ambulance drivers, fast foo workers, etc. do not make enough money to pay taxes. They need our help with health insurance, etc. just so they can continue to do the work they have chosen to do.

There will always be givers and takers in America. Those who find every loophole and do not pay their fair share are also takers. If Mr. Romney believes his statements then he has not done his homework. As Americans we need to tell him that every American is valued and those who need our help are not to be condemned as takers.

This whole issue underscores the need for truth and accuracy in all that is said and written. It also should make us realize that we cannot separate people into groups and then label them. This is all very shameful.

Have you ever seen our country divided like it is today? Obama has accomplished more division in 4 years than the USSR did in 50. Adding $5.5 trillion to our National Debt in only 4 years will BANKRUPT the country. All by a Kenyan born, Indonesian raised, Muslim Marxist. GOD help us. (Go see 2016,the movie)

Probably the same thing he threatened his opponent for the senate seat with, to get him to drop, and what he threatened hillary with to get her to drop out.

Romney's ship continues to leak and is listing ominously at the present time, while its captain (Romney) continues to deny that there are problems and that the ship is sinking and way off course. Those of you who continue to support this lier and
tax cheat will go down with the ship in November.

What did they threaten him with? One of those mugs the DNC sells with his birth certificate on it? Its funny how people claim Obama is the one dividing this country... yet its the Republicans who are acting in unprecedented ways and saying unprecedented things.. and claiming Obama is terrible for doing things that other presidents have done before and were never slammed for at all by them.. vacationing, using a teleprompter, having "czars".

Your wrong about Indonesia you can can contact the government there for the true facts there are a large group of American families that work live and have children who attend school there. you are also wrong about The President applying as a foreign student there is not factual basis for it other then false stories and made up rumors.
once again the narrow minded people can't handle the fact that we now have a person who happens to be black as president.

    HEY Joe M. in Florida!!!

Please do your homework before you make incorrect statements as you did on the previous page....if one of your parents is an american citizen at your birth, you are automatically an american citizen, even if you are born abroad i.e. if you are born in Germany at a US Military base to an American citizen serving in the military, you are an American. Get it??? I hope you are not saying that children born to military parents stationed overseas are not real Americans.

Get over it, Obama was born in Hawaii, a state in the US, to an american citizen, you can't get clearer than that.

Leave it up to CNN to write such a biased report on the Eligiblity question in Kansas. What Mr. Montgomery wanted was for the board to qualify Obama to be on the state ballot. After receiving threats to his life and his family' , he dropped the request to inquire into Obama's eligibility.
Both birth certificates. were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be FORGERIES, bad ones at that by numerous document forensic experts. As in every other ELIGIBILITY CASE, the plaintiff is never given a fair & impartial hearing & some "technicality" causes injustice. BUT, JUSTICE, EVENTUALLY, SHALL PREVAIL. TREASON is TREASON... in or out of office. Those standing up to UPHOLD & DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION will NOT go away.

You're the divider. Take some responsibility for your own actions instead of blaming everyone else. If America is divided today it's because that's the way you want it.
