What's the fallout? Conservatives split after Romney comments leaked

(CNN) – Videos captured surreptitiously at a Mitt Romney fund-raiser became the latest campaign trail bombshell when they were leaked to a left-leaning magazine on Monday evening.

The tapes show Romney arguing nearly half of Americans will vote for President Barack Obama because they rely on government support, made apparent jokes about wishing he had Latino heritage, and talks about a Chinese factory his former firm considered purchasing.

Another clip released Tuesday shows the GOP presidential candidate questioning the prospect of ever reaching peace between Israelis and Palestinians, calling a path to a solution in the region "almost unthinkable to accomplish."

Below is a smattering of reaction from conservatives around the web:

Rush Limbaugh:

"This could be the opportunity for Romney and for that campaign to finally take the gloves off and take the fear off and just start explaining conservatism. Start explaining liberty to people and what it means, and explain that they don't have to be in that 47%. There's no reason for them, for everybody, to essentially have given up on their future in this country. There's no reason for it. This is, to me, such an opportunity to espouse conservatism and to explain to people. Now that people are focused on this, now that people are paying attention to it, this is a golden opportunity, and we know Romney's got it in him because of what he said to these people."

RedState.com editor and CNN contributor Erick Erickson:

Weekly Standard editor William Kristol:

"It remains important for the country that Romney wins in November (unless he chooses to step down and we get the Ryan-Rubio ticket we deserve!). But that shouldn't blind us to the fact that Romney's comments, like those of Obama four years ago, are stupid and arrogant.

Indeed: Has there been a presidential race in modern times featuring two candidates who have done so little over their lifetimes for our country, and who have so little substance to say about the future of our country?"

Breitbart.com's John Nolte:

So, just as the media did last week with Romney's perfectly valid criticism of Obama and the Cairo Embassy apology, it looks as though we're in for another week-long stink of media-manufactured outrage.

But over what, exactly?

Over a conservative talking like a conservative and laying out facts.

When I saw these videos, my first thought was, "Gee, I wish Romney would talk this way on the campaign trail."

Romney campaign adviser Bay Buchanan:

"Certainly this is a bump in the road. But is anybody looking at the campaign of Barack Obama? He has spent the last week with America watching as his foreign policy of appeasement and apologies has disintegrated. We have problems around this world in all the Muslim countries, where anti-American sentiment is unbelievable. And that's a good week?"

Donald Trump on NBC's "Today":

"He has to not apologize; I think we've seen enough apologizing already. He cannot apologize. What he said is probably what he means, and he did say 'inartfully stated.' The fact is he cannot apologize; he is going for those independents. He won't get the votes of a lot of people he's discussing, and if you're not going to get the votes, let's go on with it."

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Fox News:

"So he would say it probably differently today, but it is a significant problem when you have this level of people that don't pay a significant amount of taxes because they can't earn a good living. So job creation, economic development through these plans, I think, are exactly the right formula for the country."

New York Times columnist David Brooks:

This comment suggests a few things. First, it suggests that he really doesn't know much about the country he inhabits. Who are these freeloaders? Is it the Iraq war veteran who goes to the V.A.? Is it the student getting a loan to go to college? Is it the retiree on Social Security or Medicare?
It suggests that Romney doesn't know much about the culture of America. Yes, the entitlement state has expanded, but America remains one of the hardest-working nations on earth. Americans work longer hours than just about anyone else. Americans believe in work more than almost any other people. Ninety-two percent say that hard work is the key to success, according to a 2009 Pew Research Survey.

Tea Party Patriots:

“This election poses a choice for voters: do you want a country dependent on government programs and handouts, or do you want a country with an economy that produces good jobs and returns America to a higher standard of living?"

“In 2011, 49 percent of Americans lived in a household where at least one member of the family received a government benefit. Since 2009, Tea Party Patriots across the nation have said: Enough! Enough of big government supporting failed companies. Enough of big government health care schemes that rob American families of the freedom to choose the best care for them. Enough of big government that divides this great nation into factions that fight for their own government handouts."

    @myviewis
Democrats don't care for Israel anyways so whatever Romney says with regards to peace between Israel and Palestian is unimportant to Democrats. Democrats had taken Jerusalem off the Democratic platform, they voted 3 times to reinstate it but it doesn't eliminate the fact that Democrats had removed Jerusalem.

Once again your opinion is not bassed on facts . Since more jews vote Democrat , I always find it amusing when people such as Myviewis speak with such deep convictions based on bad information .

I am an independent. My wife and I both work, pay taxes, and dont rely on the Government for a dime. I would never, nor will I ever vote for Romney. All he cares about is where his next million is coming from. He could care less about the working class people in this country...he can keep his millions in the bank in the Cayman Islands, and retire there for all I care. He is a perfect example of the greed that has destroyed the GOP.

And who is dividing America more now, GOP? Obama is going after 1% of the population with his tax increase, but Mitt is going after 47% of the population. 47 is greater than 1, right? Hahaha.

Romney's exactly right! The Democrats have been giving out freebies since FDR and have created a reliable voting block by writing checks and promising MORE freebies! Time to get people off their couches and earn a living! The Democrats aren't interested in people who are self-sufficient. It puts them out of business.

I am one of the 48,49 percent who supports Obama. Romney should know I pay plenty of tax dollars! I am glad to know he doesn't care about me. I didn't care about him before I heard his rude comments, and this just sealed the deal for my vote. thank you Mitt for answering any concerns I may have had! Suzan Abla

An honest assessment of Americans' tax burdens should include ALL taxes, local, state and federal.

The conservative, right wing organization, "The Tax Foundation" studied the TOTAL TAX BURDEN of Americans, and its posted data shows:

The total tax burden of the poorest among us is 36% of their total income.
The total tax burden of the second quintile is 36% of their total income.
The total tax burden of the third quintile is 39% of their total income.
The total tax burden of the top quintile is less than 8% of their total income. (ofen very much less)

Now who exactly is not paying their share???

    Gimmeabreak!

Romney tells it like it is –he's 1000% right, and we all better pay attention.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No, YOU need to pay attention. Your hero accused ALL Obama supporters of being on the dole. He said it and he meant it, nevermind that it's a lie.

He is correct and you all know it. Obama is leading you into a socialist society run by big corporate government - you didn't build that, remember? This is not Romney's fallout, this is America's fallout.

These comments are the simple truth. At what point do those of us that pay a huge share of taxes ask everyone else to pay as well. We are 16 TRILLION in debt, unemployment is above 8 percent, and the Fed is printing more money than ever. Sooner or later we all will have to pay for the OBAMA failures. Forget the international scene, we are imploding from within, just as OBAMA promised he would do, he has done. This is the death of our nation or not! Your vote is your choice, the end of the United States or a chance to turn it around.

Stick a fork in him. He's done. Listening to Bay Buchanan on Soledad's show this morning trying to defend Willard was priceless. She tried so hard to change the subject, but Soledad wouldn't let her off the hook. Now that's good journalism. "I think we've seen enough apologizing already" stated The Donald. But Donald, this is the same guy who wrote a book titled "No Apologies." lol

I'm big enough to admit it. As someone who is running for President of the United States.......It was a dumb this to say.

Doesn't change the fact that it's 100% true.

"What don't you understand about this? MITTENS IS PART OF THE 47% HE RIDICULED AND DEMEANED!!!!! "

Sniffit: From your keyboard to the Obama campaign's eyes, I hope. That's the exact reply that the President should make in the upcoming debates–should Mittens start whining & moaning about 'freeloaders'. I'm certain that Mittens will whine as it is in his nature.

Unbelievable, inappropriate, and offensive remarks. I resent the fact that because I voted for the president that I am on the government dole. Wrong. I pay taxes and I pay a rate that is twice what this clown pays. I work hard, pay into social security and Medicare and save for my kids college, just like millions of other Americans who are doing the best they can. This was a gift to the president and only reaffirms that Romney will never be president. My father has been a republican for 65 years. He is voting for Obama after hearing this tripe.

The word salad you just threw out is indicative of the alternate reality you live in. People won't vote for the man who calls them lazy and reminds them of the person who cut their job and sent it to China. I guess you prefer to live in an oligarchy, like Mexico? That's what the Right wants to create.
